أبا حسن ما صدّني عنك أنني

بخلت ولكن عاقني عنك قاصد

Out of stinginess, but a purpose kept me from you

صديق أتاني زائراً لي أضفته

ثلاثا وولى وهو للعرف حامد

A friend visited me, I hosted him

For three days, then he left, praising custom

فلا تهجني واقبل قليل عطّيتي

وبعني بها عرضي وأنت المساعد

So do not spurn me, accept my meager gift

And with it restore my dignity, for you are the helper

يدا بيد بيع المقل تكرّما

على معسر ناجاك والله شاهد

Hand in hand, generously

Sell to the destitute who appeals to you, and God is witness
