I have a friend whose gifts repulse people

Even the ungrateful and hypocrites dislike them

هو فيهم وليس منهم ولكن

ربّ رأي أعدى أمرأ من صديق

He is among them but not one of them, yet

A dear friend's bad advice is worse than an enemy's

شغَلتهُ الأعياد عنّا وعن در

س علوم الإسلام بالإبسيق

Holidays distract him from us and from studying

The sciences of Islam with diligence

ملهمٌ باليهود والسبت عن ذك

ر ليالي التغريب والتشريق

Inspired by Jews and the Sabbath, forgetting

The nights of sunset and sunrise prayers
