1. وإني وإن أصبحت في دار غربة

    وحيدا ومالي ناصر وعشير

    Though I live in a foreign land, alone,

    With no helper or kinsfolk near,

  2. ولا تتخطاني الهموم ولا أرى

    محيرا ولا يأوي إلى محير

    Cares besiege me, and I see no escape;

    I have no place of refuge or shelter.

  3. فما أنا ممن يملأ الأمر قلبه

    لعلمي بأن الدائرات تدور

    Yet I'm not one whose heart is filled with grief,

    For I know how fortunes turn and shift.

  4. حمول لعلات الرجال على الأذى

    صبور وعند الصالحات شكور

    I bear others' wrongs with patience,

    Remaining calm and forgiving.

  5. إذا كلمتني الحادثات أسوتها

    بحسن العزا عند المحال صبور

    When misfortunes address me, I meet them

    With graceful acceptance, stoic and serene.

  6. حليم إذا ما الطيش حل حبي النهى

    وإن خفّ سفساف الرجال وقور

    I am gentle when rashness stirs my love;

    Though men may lack integrity, I am dignified.

  7. أوالي عدوي خوف بادرة الردى

    وقلبي له بالفادحات يفور

    I befriend my foe, fearing the seeds of enmity,

    Though fury rages hotly in my heart.

  8. وإني لأنسى الغيظ من ذي حفيظة

    لصالح أخلاق الرجال ذكور

    I forget my anger toward the choleric,

    To uphold the virtuous traits of noble men.

  9. صبور على أدنى العاش لأنّني

    أروح وما خلق عليّ أمير

    I am patient with the barest living,

    For I own nothing, and serve no master.

  10. قنوع من الدنيا بثوب وشبعة

    وذلك خير عن شكرت كثير

    I'm content with a garment and a meal,

    Better than plenty for which I'd thank none.

  11. لساني طليق بين أهلي واسرتي

    وبين رذالات الرجال أسير

    My tongue is free among my family,

    Yet remains captive to coarse men's lies.

  12. رفيع إذا ما ضمّني صدر مجلس

    وأهل النهى بين السقال حقير

    Sublime, when wisdom gathers me to its breast,

    Wretched, when fools toss me among the rabble.

  13. وإني كمثل السيف متناه كالوطا

    وبين غراري مضربيه غرور

    I'm like an unsheathed sword, its steel pure,

    Dazzling despite the blows of its blunting.

  14. كفى بالفتى مقتا وذلا وخزية

    دعاويه فخرا وهو عنه نفور

    For a man, being despised, humbled and shamed

    Are enough punishment for his empty boasts.

  15. أنا ابن الألى شادوا العلا في عشيرة

    عديدهم في النائبات كثير

    I'm the son of masters who built glory

    For our clan-their number was legion.

  16. تحلببت بالتقوى وأيدت بالرضا

    وكف الأذى طبع إليه أصير

    I'm clothed in piety and aided by consent,

    Accustomed to stay my hand from harm.

  17. شعاري وطبعي النفع والصفح والحيا

    بحسب اجتهادي والفقير فقير

    My creed and nature are to profit, pardon and live,

    As my powers allow, though the poor stay poor.

  18. متى لم يكن كل السماح فبعضه

    ولست كراء والبصائر عور

    When perfect tolerance is absent, even a little

    Suffices me-my vision is not totally blind.

  19. قبول لأدنى الوصل من ذي مودة

    وإن شط عني وصله فعذور

    I accept the slightest friendship from one affectionate,

    Though he shun me-I find excuses for him.

  20. وإن امرأ أرضاك ظاهر وده

    وكفّ الأذى دون الندى لبرور

    When a man pretends love while his harm is hid,

    And spares me open rebuke, I'm patient, hoping he'll change.

  21. إلى الله عذري من رجال بحظهم

    أسود وفي حظ الصديق حمير

    To God I leave men whose fortune is misfortune;

    It's hard to get generosity from them.

  22. إذا ما أتاك الله من ليس نافعا

    ولا شافعا فالجود منه عسير

    So leave him be, and turn to the Truth everywhere.

    Though the lost soul aims crookedly, still shoot straight.

  23. فدعه ووال الحق في كل موطن

    فذاك وإن رام الحدال بور

    A man hopes another will linger if he profits him;

    If not, even a short time is too long.

  24. بحسب انتفاع المرء بالمرء يشتهي

    بقاه وإلا فالبقاء قصير

    We're each rich without the other. When we die,

    Without ever meeting, there'll be no question or answer.

  25. كلانا غني عن أخيه فإن نمت

    فدون التلاقي منكر ونكير

    Since I expect no visitor in dire straits,

    I'm not one to shun the outcast.

  26. كما لا أرى لي زائرا في شديدة

    فما أنا للقالي النفور زؤور

    Why visit men who offer no good

    To their guests, while claiming superior birth?

  27. علام أزور المرء لا خير عنده

    لزائره وهو المقدّم زور

    How many men, dignified in bearing,

    Are tombs when asked to show noble traits!

  28. وكم من رجال أهل زي وهيئة

    وهم عند حاجات الكرام قبور

    When a stick bears no shade or fruit for me,

    Little matters if it stands or is broken.

  29. إذا لم يكن للعود ظلّ ولا جنى

    فسيّان عندي قائم وكسير

    The chief who gifts no good, no aid,

    Except to himself, is lesser than the least.

  30. وإن كبير القوم لا خير عنده

    ولا نفع إلا نفسه لصغير

    Leave me and my poverty; of want,

    I'm the most learned scholar.

  31. ذريني وفقري لا أباك لك إنني

    من الفقر دون النائبات خبير

    Men rise by modesty and kindness.

    Never did rabble boast so high.

  32. يسود رجال بالتواضع والندى

    وما ساد لفاف الحطام قبور

    Gloom, zeal, confusion, coldness-

    Such are the wares of the witless.

  33. عبوس وناموس وتيه وجفوة

    وذلك حظ ما علمت غثور

    A cousin helped while his own brother falls-

    What miserable help and defender!

  34. ومال ابن عم دونه ينصرونه

    لبئس لعمري عدة ونصير

    Without my sins, God alone shows mercy,

    Then, after Him, my cloak and writing reed.

  35. ودون ذنوبي رحمة الله وحده

    ومن بعدها لي شبّر وشبير

    They mock me for bearing the blows of fate

    While poor, forlorn, and blind am I.

  36. وهازئة بي أن صبرت على الضوى

    جليس فقير بائس وضرير

    I said: Mock on, if you want, and don't trouble me.

    My glory faded after youth passed by.

  37. فقلت ازئي إن شئت أو لا تعنّي

    علا لمّتي بعد الشباب قتير

    Fate condemned me to sorrow in earliest years,

    A time I saw clearly the turn of chance.

  38. واسلمني الأدنى وأوسعني الردى

    زمان بكرّ النائبات بصير

    So wonder not at my patience with woes,

    For sighs and groans well within me.

  39. فلا تعجبي من طول صبري على الطوى

    فلي تحت صبري أنة وزفير

    I've seen how the camel, though stick-led,

    Walks obediently to his death.

  40. رأيت البعير العود يقتاد راسه

    إلى الموت طوعا حلقة وجرير

    So I'll bear it too, since patience comes easier

    To one whose vigor has gone.

  41. فكم صابر والصبر أيسر حالة

    تأويه بعد الخمول حبور

    Before today I feared, was pious,

    Hopeful, my life still young and fine,

  42. لقد كنت قبل اليوم أخشى وأتقى

    وأرجو وعيشي بالشباب نضير

    Friends sharing what I had, loving me, deceiving me never,

    A brother, intimate, friend consoling my soul.

  43. يشاركني فيما لديّ من الرجا

    خليل ويغشاني أخ وسمير

    Now here am I, stripped of all, having met

    A fate to sadden my heart and trouble its calm.

  44. فها أنذا خالي الرحاب خسا لقى

    يعلل قلبي روحه وبكور
