لا تصحبنّ وإن صحب

ت فعاقلا أو لا فذر

Do not befriend him, even if you befriend

Him, whether he is wise or foolish, then desist

لك في الطريف من الرجا

ل إذا اختلطت به وطر

Spare yourself the frivolous ones among men

When you mingle with them you will go astray

فمتى فعلت فكن من الحر

اللبيب على حذر

If you do so, be one of the prudent

On your guard, discreet

هو كالإناء من النضا

ر حكت صلابته الحجر

He is like a vessel of clay

Hardened by the blows of stone

ما إن تحركه السيو

ل ولا الرياح ولا المطر

Neither flood nor wind nor rain

Can shake it or make it err

والأحمق الغرّ اللحو

ج فأنت منه على غرر

While the stupid, noisy fool

You risk yourself with him

مثل الإناء من الزجا

ج له الملاحة في النظر

Like a vessel of glass

Pretty to behold

حسن يروقك حسنه

حتّى إذا وقع انكسر

Until it falls and shatters
