1. حظي من النوم بعد الهجعة الأرقُ

    ومن نهاري على أنبائه القلقُ

    My sleep after dozing is wakefulness and unrest

    And my days with their news are anxiety

  2. كم حسرة نكأت قلبي وكم غصص

    جرعتها من سفيه شأنه الحمق

    How much sorrow has squeezed my heart, and how many sorrows

    I have swallowed from a foolish ignoramus

  3. وفي صبر على ما بي لمعرفتي

    أن الزمان على تخليطه خلقُ

    Yet with patience for what has befallen me, I know

    That fate is made for such turmoil

  4. بأيّ حلم ألاقي ما بليتُ به

    وأيّ قلب لمثلي ليس يحترق

    With what dream can I find what I have endured

    And which heart is not set ablaze like mine

  5. فقرٌ وضيمٌ وإفرادٌ وبي حنف

    وغربة حسرات كلها نسق

    Poverty, injustice, loneliness and grief are my lot

    And estrangement and regrets woven together

  6. أبدي خشوعا لقوم أختفي جزَعا

    من شرّهم ولهم في شرّهم علَق

    I remain submissive to a people who in their wickedness

    I shy from, though wickedness clings to them

  7. لا غرّني من ذوي النامون سسمتهم

    والشر يظهره في الأعين الحدق

    I'm not fooled by their soft appearance

    Evil appears through squinting eyes

  8. هم الدواهي وإن عفت ظاهرهم

    همُ الأفاعي التي في لونها بلقُ

    They are wolves though their exterior is decency

    They are snakes though their skin is speckled

  9. تلك السجاجيد إن لاحت بأوجههم

    زور عليهم متى حفّوا وإن حلقوا

    Those prayer rugs, if their faces shine

    It is a lie though they trim and shave

  10. حلق الشوارب والتقصير من ردن

    ولين قول وفي ألفاظهم ملق

    Their moustaches and shorten their shirts

    With soft speech though their words flatter

  11. حتى إذا ما كشفت الستر عن نفر

    منهم وقعت فلا دين ولا خلق

    Until when the veil is lifted from some of them

    There is neither faith nor morals

  12. إن أظهروا النسك في تلبيس ظاهرهم

    فالثوب يطوى وفي أثنائه حرق

    If they display devotion in disguising their exterior

    The clothes fold and inside them is burning

  13. هم الذئاب على أهبابها وبرٌ

    وفي ضمائرها الآفات والحنق

    They are wolves in sheep's clothing yet kindness

    While inside them are harm and bitterness

  14. لا تغترر منهم بالنسك إن نسكوا

    فالنسك سترهم يوما إذا نطقوا

    Do not be fooled if they act pious

    Piety is their cover when they speak

  15. نداريهم في كلّ أمرهم

    إن أجملوا كذبوا أو أفحشوا صدقوا

    I keep away from them in all their affairs

    If they act decent, they lie; if indecent, they tell the truth

  16. تلك المحابرُ في أيديهم قضبٌ

    هنديّة وكراريس النهى الدرق

    Those pulpits in their hands are rods

    Of Indian bamboo and carpets of fine silk

  17. حاشا أولي العلم من حرّ أخي أدب

    آدابهُ نزَهٌ أخلاقُه يقَقُ

    Far be it from the learned such heated discipline

    His manners are pure and his nature calm

  18. عاد الكلام إليهم إنهم مرنوا

    على النفاق متى باروا وإن نفقوا

    Speech returns to them if they pretend

    To be accustomed to hypocrisy when obedient and if they spend

  19. متى رأيتهم عفّوا فمصيدةٌ

    حتى إذا اصطبحوا في السوءة اغتبقوا

    When you see them restrained, it is a trap

    Until they wake up immersed in wickedness

  20. ترقى الأفاعي على الأشجار ساربة

    للطير تسترها الأغصان والورَق

    Snakes climb trees crawling

    Toward birds, though branches and leaves hide them

  21. والهرّ يمنعها التأديب عن سرَق

    خوفا وفي طبعها في الخلوة السرق

    And nature prevents them though trained

    From stealing, yet stealing is their instinct in private

  22. لا قدّس الله قوما إن بدوا وعظوا

    حتى إذا غلقوا أبوابهم فسقوا

    May God not bless a people if they preach and advise

    Until when alone they disobey and sin

  23. يشقرقون فإن ثاروا ببعمقة

    يبعمقون ويستهويهم الورق

    They roar if provoked by injustice

    Provoked they howl, enticed by silk

  24. والناس كلهم ناس بأجمعهم

    حتى إذا اجتمعوا في الصورة افترقوا

    All people are just people in their entirety

    Until when gathered, they disperse

  25. يا إخوتي وبني جنسي أما رجُل

    ينتاشُني من زمان أهله فرق

    Oh brothers, my fellow man, is there no man

    To save me from the time of his corrupt people?

  26. يا ليت شعري أمات الناس أم أبقوا

    خوف الحوادث أم في لجّة غرقوا

    I wonder, did people die or are they alive

    Fearing calamities or drowned in disaster?

  27. أين الذين عهدناهم إذا سئلوا

    جادوا وإن نهضوا في نائب سبقوا

    Where are those we knew, who if asked

    Gave freely and if they rose in adversity, were first?

  28. أين الفرار من الأشرار في زمَن

    لم يبق للحرّ ي تأميله رمَق

    Where can the noble flee evil men in a time

    When the free man has no strength remaining?

  29. أمادليلٌ إلى أرض بها كرمٌ

    أو عند سكانها للحرّ مرتفق

    Is there no guide to a land of generosity

    Or people there who comfort the noble?

  30. أو السلامة من فحش ومن عنت

    أين الطريق إليها سدّت الطرق

    Or safety from sin and hardship?

    Where is the path when the roads are blocked?
