أقلل طعاما تبت بعافية

مبيت مستانس إلى الورع

Eat less, sleep well, repent sincerely

A restful night leads to piety

فقل ما بات مثقلا شره

إلا تشكى لفجأة الوجع

He who eats heavy suffers pain

From sudden illness he shall cry

أكل قليل الطعام في كرم

خير من الطيبات في ضرع

Eating little with dignity

Is better than gluttony greedily

والعيش بالأمن في الخمول بقا

أفضلُ من رفعة على فزع

Living secure in lawful laziness

Is better than glory anxiously

والدهر يمضي على سجيّته

بين كرور الشهور والجمع

Time passes in its nature

Between months in haste and delay

وأطول العمر فيه أقصره

إذ حادث الموت غير ممتنع

The longest life is still too short

When death's encounter cannot be swayed

والمرء عن سبعة يعيشُ إذا

لم يك حب لالمنى بمنطقع

One lives past seven if

Greed for hopes does not him waylay

حمل وطفل ويافع وفتىً

والكهل بعد القويّ واليفع

Child, infant, lad, youth

The mature, the strong and the decay

والشيب والموت ثمّ هل وعسى

واليأسُ مستخرج عن الطمع

Grey hair and death, what if or maybe

And despair wrenches out hope's stay
