إنّي لأعجب والعجائب جمّة

من حاسدٍ يهوى عقوبة حاسدِ

I am amazed, though wonders abound,

By an envier who desires the envier's punishment,

والداء مشترك وكلّ حاسدٌ

يتباينون بناقص أو زائد

Though the malady is shared, and every envier

Differs only by more or less;

أو منكر ذنبا ويأتي مثله

متعجبا من مذنب أو فاسد

Or one who denies a sin, yet does the like,

Amazed at the sinner or the corrupt;

ومن العجائب وهو غيظ مضحك

تيه الغنيّ على الفقير الزاهد

And of wonders - provoking laughter with anger -

Is the rich man's rage against the ascetic poor.
