أَيا غَزالَ الذَهَبِ
تَرَكتَني في تَعَبِ
O gazelle of gold,
you have left me in torment.
أَلَيسَ هَذا عَجَباً
بَلى وَفَوقَ العَجَبِ
Is this not a wonder?
Indeed—and beyond all wonder.
أَوَّلُ ما جَرَّبتُكُم
عَرَفتُكُم بِالكَذِبِ
The very first time I put you to the test,
I knew you by your lies.
ما لَكُم لَم تَكتُبوا
جَوابَ تِلكَ الكُتُبِ
What is wrong with you, that you have not written
an answer to those letters?
قَد شَكَّ فيما جاءَهُ
مِنَ الوُشاةِ الكُذَّبِ
He has come to doubt what reached him
from the lying talebearers.
فَنَفسُهُ مَوقوفَةٌ
بَينَ الرِضا وَالغَضَبِ
So his soul is held suspended
between contentment and anger.
يوشِكُ أَن يَقتُلَني ال
حُبُّ وَلا يُشعَرُ بي
It is about to kill me—
love—while no one is even aware of me.
