تَجافى مِرفَقايَ عَنِ الوِسادِ
كَأَنَّ بِهِ مَنابِتَ لِلقَتادِ
My arms shun the pillow,
As if thorns grow upon it.
فَيا مَن يَشتَري أَرَقاً بِنَومٍ
فَيَسلُبَ عَينَهُ ثَوبَ الرُقادِ
So sleep that robs the eyes,
I'd purchase at any price!
تَطاوَلَ بي سُهادُ اللَيلِ حَتّى
رَسَت عَينايَ في بَحرِ السُهادِ
Night's slumber stretched so long,
My eyes sank in a sea of sleep.
وَباتَت تُمطِرُ العَبَراتِ عَيني
وَعينُ الدَمعِ تَنبُعُ مِن فُؤادي
And all night long my eyes rained tears,
As tears sprang from my heart's core.
كَأَنَّ جُفونَ عَيني قَد تَواصَت
بِأَن لا تَلتَقي حَتّى التَنادِ
My lids agreed they'd never meet,
Not even for a moment's greet.
فَلَو أَنَّ الرُقادَ يُباعُ بَيعاً
لَأَغلَيتُ الرُقادَ عَلى العِبادِ
If sleep could be sold,
I'd buy it all from people untold!
لَعَمرُكَ ما هَناكَ قُدومُ فَوزٍ
وَلا جادَت عَلَيكَ بِطيبِ زادِ
By your life, no fortune comes your way,
No kindness spreads provision your way.
يُجَدَّدُ صَرمُها في كُلِّ يَومٍ
وَلَكِن لا يَطولُ بِهِ التَمادي
Daily it's sting renews,
But endurance it won't subdue.
وَلَو جَدَّ القِلى لَرَحلتُ عَنها
وَلَم نَسكُن جَميعاً في بِلادِ
If endurance sufficed, I'd leave this place,
And we'd never live together in one place.
مَخافَةَ أَن يَقولَ الناسُ إِنّا
خَتَمنا الوُدَّ مِنّا بِالفَسادِ
Lest people say we sealed affection with hate,
And ended our love with unworthy debate.
وَكانَت بِالحِجازِ فَكُنتُ أَرجو
لِرَجعَتِها مُحافَظَةَ الوَدادِ
When she left for Hejaz, I hoped
Her return would keep our love intact.
وَلَو خِفتُ القَطيعَةَ حَيثُ حَلَّت
رَضيتُ بِأَن تُقيمَ عَلى البُعادِ
Had I feared our bond would break,
I'd be content with distant heartache.
فَيا حَزَني لِنَفسي بَعدَ فَوزٍ
وَيا طولَ اِغتِرابي وَاِنفِرادي
What sorrow for me, after fortune smiled!
How long my estrangement and solitude!
كَأَنّي لَم أَخُض غَمَراتِ هَولٍ
لِكالِئِها مِنَ اللَحَظاتِ هادِ
As if I never braved moments of fear,
Calmed by the gentle hours sincere.
أُبادِرُ دونَها عَجَانَ أَمشي
رُوَيدَ المَشيِ مُضطَرِبَ النِجادِ
I rush ahead in haste, walking in anger,
With a restless stride growing stranger.
وَكُنّا عاشِقَينِ ذَوَي صَفاءٍ
وَوَريٍ في الجَوانِحِ ذي اِتِّقادِ
Ours was a pure love, flaming within,
Daily we were intimate, affection would win.
وَكُنّا لا نَبيتُ الدَهرَ حَتّى
نَكونَ مِنَ اللِقاءِ عَلى اِتِّعادِ
But time brought change, as all things expire,
Fading away as days retire.
فَغيَّرَها الزَمانُ وَكُلُّ شَيءٍ
يَصيرُ إِلى التَغيُّرِ وَالنَفادِ
By the dancing girls of every ravine,
Who gather to dwell in torn ruins unclean!
أَما وَالراقِصاتِ بِكُلِّ فَجٍّ
تَؤُمُّ البَيتَ في خَرقٍ وَوادِ
You've won my heart, dwelling in its cover,
Penetrating organ and soul with your lover.
لَقَد ظَفِرَت مَوَدَّتُكُم بِقَلبي
فَحَلَّت في الشَغافِ وَفي الفُؤادي
If I wished, your peers would join me,
Pure women seeking my company.
وَلَو أَنّي أَشاءُ لَواصَلَتني
ذَواتُ حِجىً إِلى وَصلي صَوادِ
Daughters of your father in beauty arrayed,
Kind and compliant, affection displayed.
عَقائِلُ مِن بَناتِ أَبيكِ صُوَرٌّ
إِليَّ ذَواتُ عَطفٍ وَاِنقيادِ
Thirsty I came to drink and sate,
But no fresh water you donate.
فَجِئتُكُمُ عَلى ظَمَإٍ لِأَروى
فَلَم يَكُ عِندَكُم بَلَلٌ لِصادِ
No ignorance was it, leaving the sea behind,
Coming to suckle milk long dried!
وَما جَهلاً تَرَكتُ البَحرَ خَلفي
وَجِئتُكُمُ إِلى مَصِّ الثِمادِ
Time turned favor upon me,
In her intercession my pillar would be.
وَقَد قَلَبَ الزَمانُ عَلَيَّ يُمناً
وَكانَ إِلى شَفاعَتِها عِمادي
Jesus betrayed my hidden tale,
And became my foe in the morn unveiled.
وَباحَ بِسِرِّيَ المَكنونِ عيسى
فَأَصبَحَ وَهوَ مِن حَدَثِ الأَعادي
Now all lovers look on me in delight,
When I was embroiled in love's fight.
وَأَصبَحتِ العَواشِقُ شامِتاتٍ
وَكُنتُ مِن العَواشِقِ في جِهادِ
