أَبلِغ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ رِسالَةً

جَزاءَ بِنُعمى قَبلَها وَوَسيلِ

Deliver to the Commander of the Faithful a message

In return for blessings he received and intercession made

بِأَنَّ عُبَيدَ اللَهِ سَيفُكَ فَليَكُن

أَخاً وَخَليلاً دونَ كُلِّ خَليلِ

That the sword of Allah's servants will be your sword, so let him

Be the brother and bosom friend, beyond any friend

بِهِ رَحِمَ اللَهُ الجُنودَ فَأَقبَلَت

وَقَد مالَتِ الأَهواءُ كُلَّ مَميلِ

With him, may Allah have mercy on the troops, so they came

While desires were inclined, each way bent

وَلَم يَكُ عَن يَومِ اِبنِ عُروَةَ غائِباً

كَما لَم يَغِب عَن لَيلَةِ اِبنِ عَقيلِ

And he was not absent from the day of Ibn 'Urwah

As he was not absent from the night of Ibn 'Aqil

أَخو الحَربِ ضَرّاها فَلَيسَ بِناكِلٍ

جَبانٍ وَلا وَجبِ الفُؤادِ ثَقيلِ

The brother of war, its harm distressed him so he is no coward

Nor faint of heart or heavily burdened

إِذا ذادَ عَن ماءِ الفُراتِ فَلَن تَرى

أَخا قِربَةٍ يَسقي أَخاً بِصَميلِ

When he shields the Euphrates water, you will never see

A brother giving drink to a brother more generous

وَأَطرَقَ عَنكُم حَيَّةً لَو تَمَكَّنَت

مِنَ الأَرضِ كانَت حَيَّةً بِغَليلِ

And he has turned away from you a snake, that if enabled

From the land, would have been a malignant serpent
