بَني مِسمَعٍ أَنتُم ذُؤابَةُ مَعشَرٍ
سَبابِجَةٍ يَرمونَني نَظَراً شَزرا
O sons of Mismaʿ, you are the crest of a people—
Sabābija who cast hostile, sidelong glances at me.
أَلَستُم بَني قَلعٍ مِنَ البَحرِ أَصلُكُم
رَأَيتُكُمُ قُعساً وَقوتَكُمُ التَمرا
Are you not sons of Qalʿ, with your origins in the sea?
I saw you sway-backed, and dates were your food.
عُيونٌ جَرى فيها النَبيذُ وَلَم تَكُن
لِتَشرَبَ مِن لُؤمٍ طِلاءً وَلا خَمرا
Eyes in which date-wine flowed, and which would not
drink, out of baseness, boiled-down grape juice or wine.
