أَتاني وَدوني الزابِيانِ كِلاهُما
وَدِجلَةُ أَنباءٌ أَمَرُّ مِنَ الصَبرِ
There came to me—though both Zabs lay between,
And the Tigris—news more bitter than aloes.
أَتاني بِأَنَّ اِبنَي نِزارٍ تَناثَيا
وَتَغلِبُ أَولى بِالوَفاءِ وَبِالغَدرِ
Word came to me that Nizar’s two sons had traded boasts and taunts,
And Taghlib is worthier of loyalty and of treachery.
