1. أَلا يا اِسلَمي يا أُمَّ بِشرٍ عَلى الهَجرِ

    وَعَن عَهدِكِ الماضي لَهُ قِدَمُ الدَهرِ

    O my dear Islam, O mother of good tidings, farewell

    And your past era has steps of time

  2. لَيالِيَ تَلهو في الشَبابِ الَّذي خَلا

    بِمُرتَجَّةِ الأَردافِ طَيِّبَةِ النَشرِ

    Nights frolicked in youth that passed

    With swaying buttocks, sweet smelling aroma

  3. أَسيلَةُ مَجرى الدَمعِ خَفّاقَةُ الحَشا

    مِنَ الهيفِ مِبراقُ التَرائِبِ وَالنَحرِ

    Tearful eyes shedding tears, passionate,

    From the beloved's love, lightning of necks and chest

  4. وَتَبسِمُ عَن أَلمى شَتيتٍ نَباتُهُ

    لَذيذٍ إِذا جادَت بِهِ واضِحِ الثَغرِ

    Smiling despite scattered pain, its plants

    Sweet when the clear lips are generous

  5. مِنَ الجازِئاتِ الحورِ مَطلَبُ سِرِّها

    كَبَيضِ الأَنوقِ المُستَكِنَّةِ في الوَكرِ

    Of beautiful maidens the goal of their secret

    Like eggs of ostrich hidden in burrow

  6. وَإِنّي وَإِيّاها إِذا ما لَقيتُها

    لَكَالماءِ مِن صَوبِ السَحابَةِ وَالخَمرِ

    And I and her when we meet

    Are like water from rain clouds and wine

  7. تَذَكَّرتُها لا حينَ ذِكرى وَصُحبَتي

    عَلى كُلِّ مَقلاقِ الجِنابَينِ وَالضَفرِ

    I remember her not when remembering and my company

    On every carpet of the two camps and the pillows

  8. إِذا ما جَرى آلُ الضُحى وَتَغَوَّلَت

    كَأَنَّ مُلاءً بَينَ أَعلامِها الغُبرِ

    When the forenoon changed and receded

    As if banners between them gray

  9. وَلَم يَبقَ إِلّا كُلُّ أَدماءَ عِرمِسٍ

    تُشَبَّهُ بِالقَرمِ المُخايِلِ في الخَطرِ

    And there remained only bloodstained knights

    Resembling the daring saviors from danger

  10. تَفُلُّ جَلاذِيَّ الإِكامِ إِذا طَفَت

    صُواها وَلَم تَغرَق بِمُجمَرَةٍ سُمرِ

    Emptying leather wineskins when they toured

    Without drowning in stirred up red wine

  11. وَتَلمَحُ بَعدَ الجَهدِ عَن لَيلَةِ السُرى

    بِغائِرَةٍ تَأوي إِلى حاجِبٍ ضَمرِ

    Glancing after effort for the night of the holy journey

    With a submissive one seeking refuge in frowning eyebrows

  12. تُدافِعُ أَجوازَ الفَلاةِ وَتَنبَري

    لَها مِثلُ أَنضاءِ القِداحِ مِنَ السِدرِ

    Repelling the terrains of the desert and rising

    For it similar to the fires of palm tree from sidr

  13. تُقَوِّمُ مِن أَعناقِها وَصُدورِها

    قُوى الأَدَمِ المَكِّيِّ في حَلَقِ الصُفرِ

    Straightening from their necks and chests

    The strength of Meccan blood in the yellow throats

  14. وَكَم قَطَعَت وَالرَكبُ غيدٌ مِنَ السَرى

    إِلَيكَ اِبنَ رِبعِيٍّ مِنَ البَلَدِ القَفرِ

    And how many times she cut across while the traveling group slept

    To you son of Rabee from the barren town

  15. وَهَل مِن فَتىً مِن وائِلٍ قَد عَلِمتُمُ

    كَعِكرِمَةَ الفَيّاضِ عِندَ عُرى الأَمرِ

    And is there a young man from Wael you knew

    Like Ikrimah the generous at the reins of affairs

  16. إِذا نَحنُ هايَجنا بِهِ يَومَ مَحفِلٍ

    رَمى الناسُ بِاَلأَبصارِ أَبيَضَ كَالبَدرِ

    When we roused him on a day of festival

    People looked towards a face white like the full moon

  17. أَصيلٌ إِذا اِصطَكَّ الجُباهُ كَأَنَّما

    يُمِرُّ الثِقالَ الراسِياتِ مِنَ الصَخرِ

    One of pure lineage whose foreheads collide as if

    Moving the heavy rocks from mountain

  18. وَإِن نَحنُ قُلنا مَن فَتىً عِندَ خُطَّةٍ

    نُرامي بِهِ أَو دَفعِ داهِيَةٍ نُكرِ

    And if we said who is the young man at time of evil plan

    We pelt him or ward off a repulsive stranger

  19. كُفينا بِحَبّاسٍ عَلى كُلِّ مَوقِفٍ

    مَخوفٍ إِذا ما لَم يُجِز صاحِبُ الثَغرِ

    Sufficient for us is Habas in every

    Frightening stand if the man of mustache does not suffice

  20. بِصُلبِ قَناةِ الأَمرِ ما إِن يَصورُها ال

    ثِقافُ إِذا بَعضُ القَنا صيرَ بِالأَطرِ

    By the firmness of the way of affairs which none pictures unless

    A culture if some of the way turns by oppression

  21. وَلَيسوا إِلى أَسواقِهِم إِذ تَأَلَّفوا

    وَلا يَومَ عَرضٍ عُوَّداً سُدَّةَ القَصرِ

    And they are not to their markets when they reconcile

    Nor a day of presentation adorned closing the palace

  22. بِأَسرَعَ وِرداً مِنهُمُ نَحوَ دارِهِ

    وَلا ناهِلٌ وافى الجَوابِيَ عَن عَشرِ

    Returning to his abode faster than

    Them not a water-drawer fulfilling from ten

  23. تَرى مُترَعَ الشيزى الثِقالِ كَأَنَّما

    تَحَضَّرَ مِنها أَهلُها فُرَضَ البَحرِ

    You see the pasture of she-camel calves burdened as if

  24. تُكَلَّلُ بِالتَرعيبِ مِن قَمَعِ الذُرى

    إِذا لَم يُنَل عَبطُ الغَوالي مِنَ الجُزرِ

    Crowned with terror from the top of millet

    When violence of Ebthal cannot be attained from the islands

  25. مِنَ الشُهبِ أَكتافاً تُناخُ إِذا شَتا

    وَحُبَّ القُتارُ بِالمُهَنَّدَةِ البُترِ

    With shoulders that rest when it tours

    And love of Guidance with docked tail

  26. وَما مُزبِدُ الأَطوادِ مِن دونِ عانَةٍ

    يَشُقُّ جِبالَ الغَورِ ذو حَدَبٍ غَمرِ

    And froth of seas not without help

    Cleaving mountains of the depths with curved hump

  27. تَظَلُّ بَناتُ الماءِ تَبدو مُتونُها

    وَطَوراً تَوارى في غَوارِبِهِ الكُدرِ

    Daughters of water stay shaded their bellies appear

    And awhile they disappear in its turbid darkness

  28. مَتى يَطَّرِد تَسقِ السَوادَ فُضولُهُ

    وَفي كُلِّ مُستَنٍّ غَوارِبُهُ تَجري

    When will the excess of blackness finish being driven

    And in every resting place its darknesses flow

  29. بِأَجوَدَ مِن مَأوى اليَتامى وَملَجَأِ ال

    مُضافِ وَوَهّابِ القِيانِ أَبي عَمروِ

    Most generous than asylum of orphans and refuge of

    Host who bestows and generous Abu Amro

  30. أَعِكرِمَ أَنتَ الأَصلُ وَالفَرعُ وَالذُرى

    أَتاكَ اِبنُ عَمٍّ زائِراً لَكَ عَن عُفرِ

    Ikrima you are origin, branch, and progeny

    A cousin came visiting you from Ufayr

  31. مِنَ المُصطَلينَ الحَربَ أَيّامَ قَلَّصَت

    بِنا وَبِقَيسٍ عَن حِيالٍ وَعَن نَزرِ

    Of those the war diminished days between us

  32. وَإِنّي صَبورٌ مِن سُلَيمٍ وَعامِرٍ

    وَنَصرٍ عَلى البَغضاءِ وَالنَظَرِ الشَزرِ

  33. إِذا ما اِلتَقَينا عِندَ بِشرٍ رَأَيتَهُم

    يَغُضّونَ دوني الطَرفَ بِالحَدَقِ الخُضرِ

    When we meet at good tidings you see them

    Lowering their gaze shyly with green eyes

  34. وَأَوجُهِ مَوتورينَ فيها كَآبَةٌ

    فَرَغماً عَلى رَغمٍ وَوَقراً عَلى وَقرِ

    And faces sullen on them gloom

    So pride against pride and dignity against dignity

  35. فَنَحنُ تَلَفَّعنا عَلى عَسكَريهِمِ

    جِهاراً وَما طِبّي بِبَغيٍ وَلا فَخرِ

    But we spurned their army

    Publicly and I do not have immorality nor pride

  36. وَلَكِنَّ حَدَّ المَشرَفِيَّةِ ساقَهُم

    إِلى أَن حَشَرنا فَلَّهُم أَسوَأَ الحَشرِ

    But the extent of nobility led them

    To where we scattered them the worst scattering

  37. وَأَمّا عُمَيرُ بنُ الحُبابِ فَلَم يَكُن

    لَهُ النِصفُ في يَومِ الهِياجِ وَلا العُشرِ

    And as for Umair ibn Hubab he did not have

    Half on day of zeal nor tenth

  38. فَإِن تَذكُروها في مَعَدٍّ فَإِنَّما

    أَصابَكَ بِالثَرثارِ راغِيَةُ البَكرِ

  39. وَكانَ يُرى أَنَّ الجَزيرَةَ أَصبَحَت

    مَواريثَ لِاِبنَي حاتِمٍ وَأَبي صَخرِ
