1. Ah, if only Kalb would trade with us

    For our ally, and the pure stock would be hers.

  2. Then we would trade ʿAwṣ for Zayd al-Lāt:

    Both lots in the exchange are mixed-bred and jet-black.

  3. And Ṭābikha, who has no might

    With which to grant protection, nor noble ancestral honor.

  4. By your life, I and Juʿayl's two sons,

    And their mother, are indeed a base foursome.

  5. So she does not know, when the people set out,

    Whether she will depart after that or stay.

  6. The sons of al-Naʿāma keep holding them back,

    When they come to water—and their watering is shameful.
