1. Excellent is the protector Simak of Banu Asad,

    at al-Marj, when Mudar slew her neighbors.

  2. For no cause—may God diminish their good—

    they have neither old rancor among them nor blood revenge.

  3. Simak has indeed built glory for his household

    until death; and doing good is undertaken at once.

  4. I had thought him a smith, and was told as much;

    but today sparks flew from his garments.

  5. The weak man’s cause did not distract him from his grazing steeds—they knew—

    nor did insolence turn him from his forbearance.

  6. He bore the test like a noble man; there will never cease to be for him

    from it, in the end, glory and a source of pride.

  7. His way shines in the dark night,

    just as the moon shines for one traveling by its light.

  8. If there is a people whose appointed falls have come due,

    Fate, an unfailing allotter, has allotted them death.

  9. Then we may prove noble and suffer no wrong; indeed,

    victory may grow for us before Marj al-Suffar.

  10. The horses charge hard, their forelocks knotted;

    they gallop, while croups and bellies heave,

  11. on the evening when the green host crushes them—

    no arrow or stone can face it.
