1. God’s mercy be upon my lady,

    and may God rain upon her grave and reward her.

  2. She denied me even coarse cloth until she was gone;

    in death, her own hands clothed me in silk.

  3. She withheld even water from me until she vanished from sight;

    then I was given honey to drink from the overflow of her bounty.

  4. After she was gone, her house became mine,

    and the shops; her two estates passed to me—

  5. a fortune that hunger had raised,

    and deprivation strode through it and built it.
