داوِ المُتَيَّمَ داوِهِ
مِن قَبلِ أَن يَجِدَ الدَوا
Treat the love-struck man—treat him,
before he finds the cure.
إِنَّ النَواصِحَ كُلَّهُم
قالوا بِتَبديلِ الهَوا
For all the counselors, every one,
prescribed a change of air.
فَتَحتُموا باباً عَلى صَبِّكُم
لِلصَدِّ وَالهَجرِ وَطولِ النَوى
You opened for your pining lover a door
to rebuff, desertion, and long separation.
فَلا تَلوموهُ إِذا ما سَلا
قَد فُتِحَ البابُ وَمَرَّ الهَوا
So do not blame him if he forgets his love:
the door was opened, and the air—his passion—passed away.
