  1. حبيبك من تحب ومن تجل

    ومن أحببت للحالين أهل

    The one you love, adore and hold dear

    The one whose love is for all time sincere

  2. ومن يجزيك عن ودّ بودّ

    ومالك مهجتي سمح وعدل

    The one who repays your affection tenfold

    Whose nature is gentle, kind and bold

  3. إذا ما الحب لم يكسبك عزا

    فكل مودّة في الناس ختل

    If love brought you no glory or fame

    Then every friendship is but a claim

  4. وفضل منك أن ترعى ودادا

    وليس لمن تودّ عليك فضل

    It’s grace enough you give loyalty

    While owing nothing to those loyal to thee

  5. بلوت الناس خدنا بعد خدن

    فما للمرء غير النفس خل

    I've tested people, step by step

    Naught but self is a man's true help

  6. وطالعت الأمور فكل صعب

    إذا لزم الرجال الصبر سهل

    I examined events, saw each one hard

    Yet with men’s resolve, all is charmed

  7. أدِل على الخطوب إذا أدلت

    وأتركها تهون ولا أذل

    I storm the heights if I assail

    But leave them be if my strength should fail

  8. وألقى النازلات بحدّ عزم

    يفل النازلات ولا يفل

    I confront misfortunes with strong heart

    So I survive and misfortunes depart

  9. وأحقر كل كذاب المعالى

    ولو أن السماك له محل

    I scorn the boaster of empty fame

    Though it seems the summit is his acclaim

  10. وأعلم أن للدهر اختلافا

    وأن الجدّ ينهض أو يزل

    I know fate forever alternating

    Seriousness rising, sinking, waiting

  11. وأن النفس للإنسان كل

    إذا بقيت عليه وزال كله

    I know the soul is all of a man

    If it remains, though his all is gone

  12. عرفت سجية الدنيا فدعها

    تمرّ على سجيتها وتحلو

    I know the nature of this life so fleeting

    Let it be, following its own beating

  13. وإن لم تأتك الدنيا بظل

    فجاوزها إلى دنيا تظل

    If worldly shade comes not to thee

    Seek a world elsewhere sheltering thee

  14. إذ المأمول والآمال حيرى

    وغيث الناس والأيام محل

    For hopes and dreams oft lead astray

    While people's fate is but a day

  15. عزيز الشرق هل للشرق ذكر

    مع الأيام أم طوِى السجل

    Has glorious East a memory left

    Or are events now from its scroll cleft

  16. وهل لبنيه من مسعاك ركن

    فركنهم ضعيف مضمحل

    Have its people any pillar of yours

    So weak and ruined what once was yours

  17. أَعِد له النوابغ فهو منهم

    ومما يرفع الأوطان عطل

    Prepare for him gifts, he is of those

    Who raise their nations when low they go

  18. ولم أر كالرجال مع الليالي

    إذا كثرت على البلدان قلوا

    But I have not seen, with nights around

    Should they increase, that men abound

  19. ولا كالعلم يجمع كل شمل

    وليس لأمة في الجهل شمل

    Nor knowledge gathering every group

    For no folk in ignorance can regroup

  20. ولا كالمجد ميسورا قريبا

    لشعب فيه إقدام وعقل

    Nor glory easily got and near

    To a people with resolve and skill clear
