1. صِغارٌ بِحُلوانَ تَستَبشِرُ

    وَرُؤيَتُها الفَرَحُ الأَكبَرُ

    Little children rejoice

    And just seeing them is the greatest joy

  2. تَهُزُّ اللِواءَ بِعيدِ المَسيحِ

    وَتُحَيّيهِ مِن حَيثُ لا تَشعُرُ

    They wave the banner for Christmas day

    And greet it though unaware

  3. فَهَذا بِلُعبَتِهِ يَزدَهي

    وَهَذا بِحُلَّتِهِ يَفخَرُ

    One takes pride in his toy

    Another in his outfit

  4. وَهَذا كَغُصنِ الرُبا يَنثَني

    وَهَذا كَريحِ الصَبا يَخطِرُ

    One bends like a willow branch

    Another darts like a morning breeze

  5. إِذا اِجتَمَعَ الكُلُّ في بُقعَةٍ

    حَسِبتَهُمو باقَةً تُزهِرُ

    When they gather in one spot

    You'd think them a blooming bouquet

  6. أَوِ اِفتَرَقوا واحِداً واحِداً

    حَسِبتَهُمو لُؤلُؤاً يُنثَرُ

    Or when they disperse one by one

    You'd think them scattered pearls

  7. وَمِن عَجَبٍ مِنهُمو المُسلِمونَ

    أَوِ المُسلِمونَ هُمُ الأَكثَرُ

    And what astonishment - the Muslims are most

    Yes, the Muslims are far more

  8. فَلاسِفَةٌ كُلُّهُم في اِتِّفاقٍ

    كَما اِتَّفَقَ الآلُ وَالمَعشَرُ

    Philosophers all, they’re unanimous

    As the clan and neighbors agree

  9. دَسَمبِرُ شَعبانُ عِندَ الجَميعِ

    وَشَعبانُ لِلكُلِّ ديسَمبِرُ

    December is for all, Shawwal too

    And Shawwal for all is December

  10. وَلا لُغَةٌ غَيرَ صَوتٍ شَجِيٍّ

    كَرَوضٍ بَلابِلُهُ تَصفِرُ

    Not a language but pleasant bird song

    Warbling meadows that chirp

  11. وَلا يَزدَري بِالفَقيرِ الغَنِيُّ

    وَلا يُنكِرُ الأَبيَضَ الأَسمَرُ

    The rich does not scorn the destitute

    Nor does the fair deny the swarthy

  12. فَيا لَيتَ شِعري أَضَلَّ الصِغارُ

    أَمِ العَقلُ ما عَنهُمو يُؤثَرُ

    Would that I knew, do little ones stray

    Or is the mind what they prefer?

  13. سُؤالٌ أُقَدِمُهُ لِلكِبارِ

    لَعَلَّ الكِبارَ بِهِ أَخبَرُ

    A question I pose for adults -

    Perhaps adults can tell me true

  14. وَلي طِفلَةٌ جازَتِ السَنَتَينِ

    كَبَعضِ المَلائِكِ أَو أَطهَرُ

    I have a little girl past two

    An angel, or even purer

  15. بِعَينَينِ في مِثلِ لَونِ السَماءِ

    وَسِنَّينِ يا حَبَّذا الجَوهَرُ

    With eyes the hue of sky

    Teeth, exquisite jewels

  16. أَتَتنِيَ تَسأَلُني لُعبَةً

    لِتَكسِرَها ضِمنَ ما تَكسِرُ

    She came asking for a toy

    To break, as is the way with toys

  17. فَقُلتُ لَها أَيُّهَذا المَلاكُ

    تُحِبُّ السَلامَ وَلا أُنكِرُ

    I said: Angel, you wish for peace

    And peace I do not forbid

  18. وَلَكِنَّ قَبلَكَ خابَ المَسيحُ

    وَباءَ بِمَنشورِهِ القَيصَرُ

    But before you the Messiah failed

    And the Emperor’s manifesto broke

  19. فَلا تَرجُ سِلماً مِنَ العالَمينَ

    فَإِنَّ السِباعَ كَما تُفطَرُ

    So do not expect peace from either world

    For beasts tear as beasts will tear

  20. وَمَن يَعدَمِ الظُفرَ بَينَ الذِئابِ

    فَإِنَّ الذِئابَ بِهِ تَظفَرُ

    And he who loses out among wolves

    Will be the wolves’ gain for sure

  21. فَإِن شِئتَ تَحيا حَياةَ الكِبارِ

    يُؤَمِّلُكَ الكُلُّ أَو يَحذرُ

    If you wish the life of adults

    All will placate or take guard

  22. فَخُذ هاكَ بُندُقَةً نارُها

    سَلامٌ عَلَيكَ إِذا تُسعَرُ

    Gives peace should you light its spark

    Haply you'll love it as a lass

  23. لَعَلَّكَ تَألَفُها في الصِبا

    وَتَخلفُها كُلَّما تَكبَرُ

    And keep it as you grow

    In it lies life for its holder

  24. فَفيها الحَياةُ لِمَن حازَها

    وَفيها السَعادَةُ وَالمَفخَرُ

    Glory and pride it endows

    In it lies sturdy, standing peace

  25. وَفيها السَلامُ الوَطيدُ البِناءِ

    لِمَن آثَرَ السِلمَ أَو يُؤثِرُ

    For those who opt for peace

    But woe to her who holds on to hate

  26. فَلوبيلُ مُمسِكَةٌ مَوزَراً

    وَلوبيلُ تُمسِكُها مَوزَرُ

    And woe to him hate holds

    She answered, though words weren’t hers

  27. أَجابَت وَما النُطقُ في وُسعِها

    وَلَكِنَّها العَينُ قَد تُخبِرُ

    But eyes can communicate

    Amazing, such talk for me, father

  28. تَقولُ عَجيبٌ كَلامُكَ لي

    أَبِالشَرِّ يا والِدي تَأمُرُ

    Is it ill you order me?

    You make your daughter love war

  29. تَزينُ لِبنتِكَ حُبَّ الحُروبِ

    وَحُبُّ السَلامِ بِها أَجدَرُ

    Though peace for me is best

    While you, kind man dislike harm

  30. وَأَنتَ اِمرُؤٌ لا تُحِبُّ الأَذى

    وَلا تَبتَغيهِ وَلا تَأمُرُ

    Seek not, nor order it

    I said: I've strayed from the path

  31. فَقُلتُ لِأَمرٍ ضَلَلتُ السَبيلَ

    وَرُبَّ أَخي ضَلَّةٍ يُعذَرُ

    And many stray yet pardoned

    Were messengers called as one

  32. فَلَو جيءَ بِالرُسلِ في واحِدٍ

    وَبِالكُتبِ في صَفحَةٍ تُنشَرُ

    Books gathered on a page spread

    The ancients and their deeds

  33. وَبِالأَوَّلينَ وَما قَدَّموا

    وَبِالآخَرينَ وَما أَخَّروا

    The late ones and theirs deferred

    To rise between them speaking

  34. لِيَنهَضَ ما بَينَهُم خاطِباً

    عَلى العَرشِ نَصَّ لَهُ مِنبَرُ

    A podium Heaven lent

    Saying: Peace loves peace

  35. يَقولُ السَلامُ يُحِبُّ السَلامَ

    وَيَأجُرُكُم عَنهُ ما يَأجُرُ

    And for it rewards galore

    The servants turned deaf, heard not

  36. لَصُمَّ العِبادُ فَلَم يَسمَعوا

    وَكُفَّ العِبادُ فَلَم يُبصِروا

    The servants turned blind, saw not
