لله ريشة صادق من ريشة

تزرى طلاوتها بكل جديد

God has a pen of truth from a pen

Its freshness is sown with each new one

كست الكتابة في المشارق كلها

حسنا وفكتها من التقييد

It has covered writing in all the easts

With beauty and released it from restriction

تهدى الحسن الخط كل مقصر

وتمدّ في الإحسان كل مجيد

It gives the good style to each lazy one

And extends favor to each glorious one

أغلى لدى الكتّاب إن ظفروا بها

من ريشة الألماس عند الغِيد

It is more precious to writers if they obtain it

Than a diamond pen at al-Ghayd

وألُّذ فوق الطرس إن خطرت به

من ريشة الليثيّ فوق العود

And more pleasant on paper if it flows on it

Than an aromatic pen on the oud wood

وتكاد تحيى مؤنسا بصريرها

وتقول أيام ابن مقلة عودى

It almost revives a visual companion with its whistling

And says the days of Ibn Muqla have returned

لو لم يكن في الأمر إلا أنها

مصرية لأستوجبت تمجيدي

If there were nothing in the matter except that it

Is Egyptian, it would deserve my glorification
