From what ancient era in the villages does it overflow,

And by whose hand in the cities does it bestow,

Did it descend from the sky or was it made to gush forth

From the exalted gardens, brooks that murmur and babble?

With what eye or with what balance,

Or with what deluge does it pour forth and roar?

With what descent are you weaving a cloak,

Its new wool for the banks not worn out?

It darkens to black when you leave it

And when you come it lightens to white brocade,

In every moment you change its dye,

Wondrous! And you are the dyer, the elegant.

The ages came to you, your cradle spacious,

And your meadow the resplendent East overflowing,

You give drink and food, your vessel not stingy

To those who arrive, nor are your servers sparing,

You spill the water so it flows limpid

And soak the land so the drowned live,

Your springs bewilder minds, and the student

Flounders in its knowledge, and the researcher probes,

You created the basil of the ages, and have not ceased

To have a crimson like musk not fading,

Red in the ponds, except that it is

White on the land’s neck, sparkling,

The religion of the ancients in you is the creed of glory,

Why shouldn’t the one you nourish and sustain deify you?

If a creature were deified, your place would not be

    The station of divinity, exalted,

They made passion for you and dignity a worship,

Since worship is awe and attachment,

They professed a sea abundant in noble deeds,

Sweet are its ways, its abundance unmatched,

Bound to his pacts and promises,

Flowing with the ways of loyalty and truthful,

The valley welcomes from your rest a generous life

Flooding, turning from side to side in your bliss then leafing,

It spends the night fertile in its soil and blessing

And it is flooded by the water of life nourishing it,

And to you after God it returns, under you,

Whatever withers or dies or runs out,

Where are the mighty Pharaohs with whom

Jesus and Joseph and the revered Moses contended?

The ones who watered the people at a spring of wisdom,

To which the prophets came to drink,

The ones who raised their fathers to the morning glow,

So the bright sun is their origin sparkling,

And as if between decay and their graves

Lies a pact not to touch or move,

So their veil below the soil out of awe

Is like their veil above the soil, intact,

They attained the truth of a life whose curtains

Are dense and whose secret is locked,

And they saw the meaning of existence so they did not see

    Apart from eternity, happiness achieved,

They build for the world as is built for them

By separation's ravens in it cawing,

So their palaces are huts and nomads' homes

While their graves are lofty towering edifices,

They raised for it columns and porches

As pillars, so it became an unassailable wall,

The two houses overlap in it yet no

World appears nor another concealed truthful,

For death a secret lies under it and its enclosure

Is like a fence round the hidden closet dug,

And as if their dwelling in the earth’s depths

Lies between an inn and an inn, an apartment,

Abundant are their provisions under the soil,

Ample around them in the caves sealed,

And to whom are temples whose builder raised them

High between the floods and the soil, tiered,

Some erected like towers while others

Lie like a prone mountain range, marked,

New as if their first era, and around them

The earth and the horizon age and grow old,

The face of the earth is strained by any weight

That tires it, and cramped by all that climbs it,

High upon the arm of decay, none can discern

What summits it or scales its ascent circling,

Fixed like a mountain, its root in the soil

And its branch in the inviolable sphere soaring,

Built of darkness's essence except that

Its darkness lightens and the dawn breaks from it,

No eras with them have burdened kings

With a pride for them remaining and a fragrance lingering,

Your banks have tempted mortals, who cease not

To perform pilgrimage to them or gaze at them,

And the ages have taken their fill from you as if

In every direction stands aloft sweet incense burning,

Upon thrones they met restoring glory

Snatching back disgrace, no longer cringing,

They neglected and Sheba's Belqis took from his jewelry

And came to you passionate, her wrap gathered,

She removed for you her modesty and her life—

Is aught dearer than these two things offered?

And when love is fulfilled and the ransom agreed

The soul stands at sacrifice's door most fitting,

This lower world is but primordial clay

    In it, illumination and darkening,

In it is the general fertility a leaven

From which flows what it carried to the land bursting,

In it was no place for increase

And from its protective heat decrease enters not,

Scattered on earth, organizing the soil

And taking from what is in the sky attached,

From it comes our life and its opposite,

Ever we return to it and from it are created,

And crops, their grains are wholesome and their seeds

Emerge from it, this and that split open,

And it braces the bees' house, so it is laden with honey

And props the ants' house, so it is burrowed,

And it remains between the forces of life, wonders,

Neither settling permanently nor being eradicated,

It is the word of God Almighty and His spirit

In all creatures and His secret concealed,

In star and moon its manifestation when

They rise on the world and the hour beats,

Atom and boulder of what He rounded

And elephant of what He shaped and ostriches,

So early minds were tempted and deified

What awes and rends from everything piercing,

They bowed to a creature and thought creator

What cannot in darkness distinguish and differentiate,

And when they performed pilgrimage to the graves you'd think them

The substitute for the holy, pure of sins,

They come to Thebes with offerings ahead of them

Covering cities and villages and layering them,

So voyagers crammed with pilgrims as if they are

    Darts vying or arrows darting,

From a shore where life resides to a shore

That is the resting place of those preceding and a harbor,

They passed away with the sunset in it and lay equal

Shah and beggar in the soil and a pallet,

There the barrows in the open are like

Bits of clouds or a fading mirage,

Truth has a turn in it and principles

Like dawn from its edges bursting,

They alighted at it so kings walked honorably

While the servile crawled with wealth flattering,

Its courtyards were cramped by them so it seemed

The wilderness returned their deposits scattered,

And the living and dead sociably conversed in it

As if in fate they never parted,

The origin of civility is steady in your plateau

And its growth fine upon you cultivated,

It was born so you were the cradle, then it grew

So the sheltering guardian shadowed it devoted,

It filled your lands with stored wisdom

Inscribed in stone and scripture precious engraved,

And it built magnificent houses of knowledge—

An expatriate and Easterner yearn for them—

And it innovated a creed that became virtues

And moral structures lengthening and transcending,

It paved the way for every creed after it

As musk whose scent remains when another opens,

It calls to dutifulness and exalts the righteous

And pardons what violates dignity and corrupts customs,

Of its mysteries the masses are taught

While its clerical order possesses deeper truths,

In it are realms for the most high entities

And for monotheism's unifier attachments abound,

Moses' ark remains majestic appearing upon you,

With dew for it the vegetation grows tall and buds open,

And Joseph's beauty, its banner still

Hovers around you on the horizon's rim glistening,

And his brothers' tears are missives of repentance

Penned on your banks, lined up embellished,

And Virgin Mary's prayer above your crop still

Causes, at her mention, plants to thrive and rise high,

And Christ's steps upon you a pure spirit

Are your Lord's blessings and bounty abundant,

And the caliph's trusts with you, his religion

And standard and statement and proof,

He delegated the companions carrying guidance—

    What enlivens minds and illuminates—

The openings were with angels' aid a downpour

In it, and Badr's stalwarts a downpour,

They erect God's houses with the palm branches

And God, round the buildings, facilitates and perfects,

    Cavalry troops, though their swords

In scabbards from calamities, are perturbed,

Lands round are folded for them and their army aids,

An army of morals overwhelming glittering,

In truth sheathed, though their noble sword

    From ignorance rends and tears,

    Conquest's injustice none diminish save

The chaste whose gentle blade compassionates,

The original ribat was but a wall

Sheltering the weak at its pillar fatigued,

And at it birds seek food midst destruction

While Caesar spends the night fretted,
