أعطى العهود وأقسم الأقساما

أن لا يطول مقامه فأقاما

He gave pledges and swore oaths

That his stay would not be long, yet he stayed

خمسون عاما في البلاد يسوقها

بالعنف عاما والهوادة عاما

Fifty years in the country, leading it

A year by force, a year by leniency

مستعمر جعل الخلاف ذريعة

ليهز رمحا أو يسل حساما

A colonizer who made conflict an excuse

To shake a spear or unsheathe a sword

لما أتى الوادي وعبّاً جيشه

وجد الرعية والرعاة نياما

When he came to the valley with his mobilized army

He found the people and shepherds sleeping

ومشى يقلَّب في المعسكر عينه

فيرى الصفوف ولا يحس إماما

And he walked about, turning his eyes over the camp

Seeing the ranks, not noticing an imam

قد أقبل التاريخ في محرابه

بجزى الرجال وينطق الأحكاما

History has come in its sanctuary

To reward men and pronounce judgments

اليوم يُتَّهم الأبوة في البلى

ويُناقشون جماجما وعظما

Today fatherhood is blamed for the afflictions

And they discuss skulls and bones

رفقا على الآباء إن لهم غدا

يوما ينسِّى حرّه الأياما

Gently with the forefathers, for tomorrow they have

A day that will make the heat of days forget

يُجزّون فيه عن التقاطع بينهم

إن انشقاق الأهل كان حراما

A day in which they will be rewarded for the discord between them

Indeed, the splitting of kin was unlawful

وعن الوثوب جماعة بجماعة

يتنازعون ولاية وحطاما

And for the sudden attacks of one group against another

Competing over authority and ruins

حتى أنت سفن المغير وخيله

فترّقوا في الضفتين نعاما

Until you made the ships of invaders and their horses

Scatter on the two banks like ostriches

يا أيها الجيل الذي يبنى غدا

كن في بنائك حازما مقداما

O generation which will build tomorrow

Be steadfast and bold in your building

واجعل أداتك في البناء محبة

وتعاونا وتآلفا ووثاما

And make your building tool love

And cooperation, harmony and loyalty

وإذا بنيت الملك فآبن حقيقة

لا تبن أوهاما ولا أحلاما

And if you build a nation, build it truly

Build not illusions or dreams

وانظر إلى الماضى فإن المهتدى

من يجعل الماضي هدى وزماما

And look to the past, for guided is he

Who makes the past his guide and rein
