بعدت ديار واحتوتك ديار
هيهات للنجم الرفيع قرار
You left your home and settled in a new home
Alas, no rest for the lofty star
ضجت عواد بالبَراح روائح
وشكا حديد سابح وبخار
Dews wet the sand and steam rises
As iron laments swimming in the sea
بالأمس تصدر عن فروقٍ صاديا
واليوم يوردك الشآم أوار
Yesterday you sailed calling from ship decks
Today Damascus welcomes you with lights
زعموا المسافة ليلة ونهارها
ما الدهر إلا ليلة ونهار
They claimed the journey was but a night and day
Yet life itself is but a night and a day
سِر وآسر في طول البلاد وعرضها
إن الأهلة دأبها الأسفار
Travel far and wide across the lands
For the new moon is accustomed to voyages
والأرض أوسع والعجائب جمة
والعمر أضيق والسنون قصار
The earth is vast with abundant wonders
Yet life is short and years fly by
يا راكب الداماء يزجى فلكه
رُحماك هل للفلك عندك ثار
O rider of oceans with roaring waves
Does the tumultuous sea avenge you?
مأسورة ابدا تروح وتغتدى
وهلاكها في أن يفك إسار
The spheres are forever moving and returning
And their ruin lies in breaking orbit
حازت نفوس العالمين وحازها
ضمن الجواري صاحب غدار
They contained the souls of both worlds
Among the heavenly maidens was a traitor
همت وجرأها على تياره
أن الأمور جميعها تيار
With will and daring against its currents
For all affairs are but currents
تجرى مُؤَمَّنَةَ السبيل زمامها
لطف الجليل وحصنها المقدار
Flowing steadily, reins held gracefully
By the kindness of the Majestic Ordainer
في قُلَّبٍ ما للرفاق وسيلة
فيه ولا لهمو عليه خيار
In a revolution, friends are powerless
Without choice over its course
بينا مودّته على أكبادهم
برد إذا هي في الجوانح نار
While his affection warms their hearts
When aloof, it burns their chests like fire
مازلت أعرض في الضمير لآلئى
وأغِيره بنظيمها فيغار
I gather pearls in my conscience
Arranging them in verses to provoke envy
والفلك يرقص والرياح عوازف
والليل ليل والعباب مثار
The spheres dance and winds make music
The night is dark and meteors blaze
حتى نزلت بباكرين إلى القرى
متهللين كأنهم أقمار
Until I arrived at dawn to the villages
Radiant, as if we were moons
سبقت إلى السارى الصباحَ وجوههم
تندى ويحمد عندها الإسفار
Our faces preceded the morning breeze
Dewy, praising the journey
قوم هم العرب الكرام تمخضت
مضر بهم في شرخها ونزار
A people, the noble Arabs, born
Of Mudar's womb, her slit and linea nigra*
نزلوا بلبنان الأشم ونقّلوا
فيه المكارم حيث سار الجار
They descended upon fragrant Lebanon
And settled, where settlers roamed
لبنان يا ملك الجبال تحية
رقت وأزلفها لك الإكبار
O King of Mountains, Lebanon, greetings
Lofty peaks honor and exalt you
عاليه تحملها إليك وصوفر
ومناهل بالجنتين غزار
With pine and oak carrying my greetings
And springs abundant as the Gardens
من نازح الدار التقى بك داره
ساح الأكارم للكريم ديار
Whoever left home met you, their home
Virtue's plain, a land for the noble
خلَّى الأحبة والمآرب خلفه
فإذا الأحبة فيك والأوطار
Left loved ones and aspirations behind
Finding them in you, their place of banner's raising
للواردين على رياضك أعين
من فضلة أهدابهن نضار
For those who visit your meadows
Eyes with luscious lashes so fresh
سال الفرات بها وقام كأنه
دمع السرور لو أنه مدرار
The Euphrates flowed with tears
As if it were copious weeping from joy
ليت الزمان أجار من أحداثه
قطرين بينهما هوى وجوار
If only time could protect us from its events
A while together, with love and settling
أخذ المحبة من على وابنه
وعلى الهوى تتألف الأفكار
It took love from Ali and his son*
While ideas unite through passion
