1. في المَوتِ ما أَعيا وَفي أَسبابِهِ

    كُلُّ اِمرِئٍ رَهنٌ بِطَيِّ كِتابِهِ

    Death has no end, its causes ensnare

    Each person's fate written, none can evade

  2. أَسَدٌ لَعَمرُكَ مَن يَموتُ بِظُفرِهِ

    عِندَ اللِقاءِ كَمَن يَموتُ بِنابِهِ

    Lion you are, dying with glory astride

    Not like dying from snakebite, disgraced

  3. إِن نامَ عَنكَ فَكُلُّ طِبٍّ نافِعٌ

    أَو لَم يَنَم فَالطِبُّ مِن أَذنابِهِ

    If destiny sleeps, life prospers and thrives

    Else, from its tail comes ruin, life deprived

  4. داءُ النُفوسِ وَكُلُّ داءٍ قَبلَهُ

    هَمٌّ نَسينَ مَجيئَهُ بِذَهابِهِ

    Before any illness, the soul's sickness lies

    Grief comes, makes you forget whence derived

  5. النَفسُ حَربُ المَوتِ إِلّا أَنَّها

    أَتَتِ الحَياةَ وَشُغلَها مِن بابِهِ

    The soul battles death but heedless it lives

    Through life's gates, its mission deprived

  6. تَسَعُ الحَياةَ عَلى طَويلِ بَلائِها

    وَتَضيقُ عَنهُ عَلى قَصيرِ عَذابِهِ

    Long trials seem short in life's tapestry

    While short pains seem so long, unsatisfied

  7. هُوَ مَنزِلُ الساري وَراحَةُ رائِحٍ

    كَثُرَ النَهارُ عَلَيهِ في إِنعابِهِ

    Home for the weary, rest for the sprier

    Though for most, life is longer, unsatisfied

  8. وَشَفاءُ هَذي الروحِ مِن آلامِها

    وَدَواءُ هَذا الجِسمِ مِن أَوصابِهِ

    Cure for the spirit, its pains to relieve

    Balm for the body from harm to deprive

  9. مَن سَرَّهُ أَلّا يَموتَ فَبِالعُلا

    خَلُدَ الرِجالُ وَبِالفِعالِ النابِهِ

    Who enjoys no death, through great deeds will live

    Heroic acts make one death deride

  10. ما ماتَ مَن حازَ الثَرى آثارَهُ

    وَاِستَولَتِ الدُنيا عَلى آدابِهِ

    The dead remain if their works stay alive

    As the world is imprinted with what they contrived

  11. قُل لِلمُدِلِّ بِمالِهِ وَبِجاهِهِ

    وَبِما يُجِلُّ الناسُ مِن أَنسابِهِ

    Say to the arrogant, rich and esteemed

    Exalted lineage cannot death override

  12. هَذا الأَديمُ يَصُدُّ عَن حُضّارِهِ

    وَيَنامُ مِلءَ الجَفنِ عَن غُيّابِهِ

    This life ignores warnings, slumbers unredeemed

    Cares not for loss till the final collide

  13. إِلّا فَنىً يَمشي عَلَيهِ مُجَدِّداً

    ديباجَتَيهِ مُعَمِّراً بِخَرابِهِ

    Ruins and rubble - that is its fate predecreed

    Death renovates what finery tried to hide

  14. صادَت بِقارِعَةِ الصَعيدِ بَعوضَةٌ

    في الجَوِّ صائِدَ بازِهِ وَعُقابِهِ

    A gnat challenging death was slapped in its conceit

    Against the earth, its hunter could not chide

  15. وَأَصابَ خُرطومُ الذُبابَةِ صَفحَةً

    خُلِقَت لِسَيفِ الهِندِ أَو لِذُبابِهِ

    The fly's proboscis stabbed where blades failed to skewer

    Made for the Indian sword or the fly's snide

  16. طارَت بِخافِيَةِ القَضاءِ وَرَأرَأَت

    بِكَريمَتَيهِ وَلامَسَت بِلُعابِهِ

    By destiny's whisper the deed was done quick

    Its innocence lost by its saliva's slide

  17. لا تَسمَعَنَّ لِعُصبَةِ الأَرواحِ ما

    قالوا بِباطِلِ عِلمِهِم وَكِذابِهِ

    Hear not what spirits say in ignorance boast

    With lies and fabricated knowledge they chide

  18. الروحُ لِلرَحمَنِ جَلَّ جَلالُهُ

    هِيَ مِن ضَنائِنِ عِلمِهِ وَغِيابِهِ

    The soul belongs to God, His might exceeds all

    His knowledge profound, where none can reside

  19. غُلِبوا عَلى أَعصابِهِم فَتَوَهَّموا

    أَوهامَ مَغلوبٍ عَلى أَعصابِهِ

    Deluded they are by their conceit's downfall

    Like the defeated, wits all set aside

  20. ما آبَ جَبّارُ القُرونِ وَإِنَّما

    يَومُ الحِسابِ يَكونُ يَومَ إِيابِهِ

    No tyranny lasts, judgement day will appall

    When all evil's reckoned, none can deride

  21. فَذَروهُ في بَلَدِ العَجائِبِ مُغمَداً

    لا تَشهَروهُ كَأَمسِ فَوقَ رِقابِهِ

    The tyrant when alone can be withstood

    Not under his crown and robes of pride

  22. المُستَبِدُّ يُطاقُ في ناووسِهِ

    لا تَحتَ تاجَيهِ وَفَوقَ وِثابِهِ

    While the lone fool, his harm stops in the wood

    Like a sheathed sword, danger put aside

  23. وَالفَردُ يُؤمَنُ شَرُّهُ في قَبرِهِ

    كَالسَيفِ نامَ الشَرُّ خَلفَ قِرابِهِ

    Was Tutankhamun embalmed but to delude?

    His soul dressed as a gnat, all pomp denied?

  24. هَل كانَ توتَنخٌ تَقَمَّصُ روحُهُ

    قُمُصَ البَعوضِ وَمُستَخَسَّ إِهابِهِ

    Or plotting your ruin for companionship true?

    When lifelong loyalty he for you cried

  25. أَو كانَ يَجزيكَ الرَدى عَن صُحبَةٍ

    وَهوَ القَديمُ وَفاؤُهُ لِصِحابِهِ

    By God, if Giza's pyramids were your gift

    It would be too small for all you provided

  26. تَاللَهِ لَو أَهدى لَكَ الهَرَمَينِ مِن

    ذَهَبٍ لَكانَ أَقَلَّ ما تُجزى بِهِ

    You brought it glory, made it your heir

    As nobles you welcomed, their place secured

  27. أَنتَ البَشيرُ بِهِ وَقَيِّمُ قَصرِهِ

    وَمُقَدِّمُ النُبَلاءِ مِن حُجّابِهِ

    All people you told of its hallowed prayer

    And gathered them around it, their faith assured

  28. أَعلَمتَ أَقوامَ الزَمانِ مَكانَهُ

    وَحَشَدتَهُم في ساحِهِ وَرِحابِهِ

    Without you adorning its stony lair

    No added glory would have endured

  29. لولا بَنانُكَ في طَلاسِمِ تُربِهِ

    ما زادَ في شَرَفٍ عَلى أَترابِهِ

    The pigeon outdid the hawk in renown fair

    While you excelled all in vision cured

  30. أَخنى الحِمامُ عَلى اِبنِ هِمَّةِ نَفسِهِ

    في المَجدِ وَالباني عَلى أَحسابِهِ

    You hauled rocks with resolve and dedication rare

    Time passed as you piloted its course assured

  31. الجائِبُ الصَخرَ العَتيدَ بِحاجِرٍ

    دَبَّ الزَمانُ وَشَبَّ في أَسرابِهِ

    Had the dead their skulls exchanged in reparation

    Lost in confusion, their wits obscured

  32. لَو زايَلَ المَوتى مَحاجِرَهُم بِهِ

    وَتَلَفَّتوا لَتَحَيَّروا كَضَبابِهِ

    Undeterred, undaunted, you persevered

    Until you unlocked all mysteries obscured

  33. لَم يَألُهُ صَبراً وَلَم يَنِ هِمَّةً

    حَتّى اِنثَنى بِكُنوزِهِ وَرِغابِهِ

    Reaching history's close, all was made clear

    Even Pharaoh midst food, was secured

  34. أَفضى إِلى خَتمِ الزَمانِ فَفَضَّهُ

    وَحَبا إِلى التاريخِ في مِحرابِهِ

    Your bed's perfume, scent spreading near

    Pearls and garments, all so assured

  35. وَطَوى القُرونَ القَهقَرى حَتّى أَتى

    فِرعَونَ بَينَ طَعامِهِ وَشَرابِهِ

    As if harvesters all their yield collected

    Fruits and vines, nothing immured

  36. المَندَلُ الفَيّاحُ عودُ سَريرِهِ

    وَاللُؤلُؤُ اللَمّاحُ وَشيُ ثِيابِهِ

    A grave holding what no scabbard contained

    Of bygone glory and pomp assured

  37. وَكَأَنَّ راحَ القاطِفينَ فَرَغنَ مِن

    أَثمارِهِ صُبحاً وَمِن أَرطابِهِ

    Civilisation's palace, culture's fane

    Meet in the tomb, equal when immured

  38. جَدَثٌ حَوى ما ضاقَ غُمدانٌ بِهِ

    مِن هالَةِ المُلكِ الجَسيمِ وَغابِهِ

    There time bears its burdens all the same

    As today time's vigour is obscured

  39. بُنيانُ عُمرانٍ وَصَرحُ حَضارَةٍ

    في القَبرِ يَلتَقِيانِ في أَطنابِهِ

    Knowledge meets ignorance in Hades' reign

    Art meets wonder in hell secured

  40. فَتَرى الزَمانَ هُناكَ عِندَ مَشيبِهِ

    مِثلَ الزَمانِ اليَومَ بَعدَ شَبابِهِ

    My brother, you have reached destinations plain

    Where worldly travels all lead assured

  41. وَتُحِسُّ ثَمَّ العِلمَ عِندَ عُبابِهِ

    تَحتَ الثَرى وَالفَنُّ عِندَ عُجابِهِ

    A realm where passions on all sides detain

    Only the vigilant stay secured

  42. يا صاحِبَ الأُخرى بَلَغتَ مَحَلَّةً

    هِيَ مِن أَخي الدُنيا مُناخُ رِكابِهِ

    Enemies sleep, their hatreds restrain

    Friends find beloved thoughts assured

  43. نُزُلٌ أَفاقَ بِجانِبَيهِ مِنَ الهَوى

    مَن لا يُفيقُ وَجَدَّ مِن تَلعابِهِ

    Eternal rest, a timeless domain

    Stillness complete no more obscured

  44. نامَ العَدُوُّ لَدَيهِ عَن أَحقادِهِ

    وَسَلا الصَديقُ بِهِ هَوى أَحبابِهِ

    The Valley of Kings wept, eyes complaining

    Like mourners' dresses, grief immured

  45. الراحَةُ الكُبرى مِلاكُ أَديمِهِ

    وَالسَلوَةُ الطولى قِوامُ تُرابِهِ

    Their slopes donned black, skies heavy raining

    Sunlit friends no more endured

  46. وادي المُلوكِ بَكَت عَلَيكَ عُيونُهُ

    بِمُرَقرَقٍ كَالمُزنِ في تَسكابِهِ

    Longing for your desert, not disdaining

    Neither mirage nor companion assured

  47. أَلقى بَياضَ الغَيمِ عَن أَعطافِهِ

    حُزناً وَأَقبَلَ في سَوادِ سَحابِهِ

    Wishing you wore their coats remaining

    In their peaks entombed, safe secured

  48. يَأسى عَلى حَرباءِ شَمسِ نَهارِهِ

    وَنَزيلُ قيعَتِهِ وَجارُ سَرابِهِ

    You exalted it above all uncomplaining

    With its plateau and hills assured

  49. وَيَوَدُّ لَو أُلبِستَ مِن بَردِيَّهِ

    بُردَينِ ثُمَّ دُفِنتَ بَينَ شِعابِهِ

    From a tomb, civilization's book ascertaining

    Art and wonders from it assured

  50. نَوَّهتَ في الدُنيا بِهِ وَرَفَعتَهُ

    فَوقَ الأَديمِ بِطاحِهِ وَهِضابِهِ

    You detailed it, words concise, sparkling like lightning

    Missives built on its dictates immured

  51. أَخرَجتَ مِن قَبرٍ كِتابَ حَضارَةٍ

    الفَنُّ وَالإِعجازُ مِن أَبوابِهِ

    Beacons over Paris, the world discerning

    And the seas beyond it, spread assured

  52. فَصَّلتَهُ فَالبَرقُ في إيجازِهِ

    يُبنى البَريدُ عَلَيهِ في إِطنابِهِ

    You brought them a masterwork, faith confirming

    Their excellence, knowledge secured

  53. طَلَعا عَلى لَوزانَ وَالدُنيا بِها

    وَعَلى المُحيطِ ما وَراءَ عُبابِهِ

    For the cause, a pillar you provided, affirming

    None built with mere words could have endured

  54. جِئتَ الشُعوبَ المُحسِنينَ بِشافِعٍ

    مِن مِثلِ مُتقَنِ فَنِّهِم وَلُبابِهِ

  55. فَرَفَعتَ رُكناً لِلقَضِيَّةِ لَم يَكُن

    سَحبانُ يَرفَعُهُ بِسِحرِ خِطابِهِ
