With your sword, truth prevails and truth is victorious

And the religion of Allah is helped whenever you strike

The sword is but a sign of kingship in the land

And authority belongs only to the one who overcomes

So discipline the tyrannical people with it, for it is

An excellent discipliner of the arrogant tyrants

And cure the states of all their ills with it

For it is the best physician and healer

The concerns of kingship sleep when he stays up at night

And when he sleeps, they awake and stir

Have we felt secure at night from any misfortune?

Armenia is bereaved, and Hauran turned white

The ties of the Greek kingdom are loosened

Your hope gives it life, and your fear takes it away

You threatened the capital of the Commander of the Faithful

With the radiant like the dawn, which cannot be denied

The sword of Uthman has remained a truthful dawn

With a star from your wisdom rising alongside it

Whenever you split open difficult events with its edge

The darkness of calamities is uncovered and the hidden becomes manifest

The enemies fear in it your caliphate

In which they have stakes, while Allah has stakes

Through you, oh Abdulhamid, has come a fatherhood

Of thirty fresh faced caliphs gone by

At times caesars, at other times sovereigns

And princes, and the honorable ones brought low

The stars of the sovereignty of Saud, the moons of its bloom

If only the stars and flowers could be brought together by a father!

They have inherited it generation after generation

While their turban of reverence and wrap grew larger

They are the sun that has not abandoned its celestial orbit

And we have its morning glow and beloved rays

You have ascended a throne the ages will rise with

Humbly, and the nights will fear and shudder because of it

Firmly established on the horizon of existence, supported

By the sun of balance that has no setting for time

Hardships have submitted to it until you ascended them

And so you stood at one of their summits

And so you were like an overflowing spring

Entrusted with the earth, streaming through the ground

Bringing life, your flow running through the countries and irrigating them

And so you revived what was erased of principles, in ruins,

As if you were Jesus the honored one, in what you came with

And erected a minaret for the caliphate in the world

In which its sun shines and sets

You stayed up while the Muslims slept contentedly

And the wakeful and the sleeping father does not disturb

So we were awakened by the dawn whose radiance

Cannot be denied, nor you, oh dawn of peace

Your sword in wars is most eloquent

And your principles from the pulpits most resolute

And your determination from Homer is most clearly reasoned

And most refined and sweet in hearts

Whenever they mention Alexander and his conquests

Your era of glorious opening is closer

And your kingdom guided more perfectly by evidence

And surer in aiming arrows in matters and more precise

You manifested, oh Commander of the Faithful, over the enemies

A manifestation that vexes the envious and tires them

Ask the age, the days, and the people - has anything equaled

Your opinion of them or your striking sword?

They have filled the world with ignorance and blindness

An ignorance from the helpers that is most wayward and false

But when you unsheathed the sword, the flash of their army faded away

And you, oh flash of death, do not fade away

You seized them unable to control their own valley

Save what they prolonged with pleas and lies

And your lion-like people did not burden themselves with preparation

Rather it is in the nature of lions to prepare

And so it is with people - their righteousness remains

While their affairs depart when morals depart

And it is the pride of homelands that a honored sword

Or refined poet not escape them

You have taken control of their roads, so in the East a place

For your army to strike, and in the West a place to strike

    Eighty thousand ferocious, roaring lions

With claws in them and claws for death

If they show restraint, evil still has the teeth of a biter

And if they get angry, evil awakens, stinging

A broad daylight more penetrating than the sun

And farther than the sun's rays yet closer

You face them at dawn and dusk

Appearing at times and disappearing at others

Emerging from every high place and settling

And entering from one direction then leaving from another

Controlling the edges of the valleys and coming together

And easily conquering every high and low place

    Encircling the strongholds and citadels

So the virgin and the deflowered switch roles

The accurate observer of wars leads its regiments

Tested in battles, attacking and withdrawing

Bringing them at times then returning at others

As the sea surge comes and goes, rising and falling

And hurling them from every side like the sea

Each surge foaming and crashing into the next

And sending them out through every valley to meet up

As clouds meeting when branching out

And timing their emergence to fight him

As the hour hand meets the minute hand

So the eyes of war were confused by what they saw

Eyes incredulous at the lions' coming and going

Marveling at the shooters and their shooting

Admiring the leaders and soldiers even more

And praising the one who rallied the armies, Yildiz

And the one who inspired them in their feats and gains

For kingship is but the army in status and appearance

And the army is but its Lord when attributed

    She frequently mentions the heroic

With pride in beauty, herself marveling

She trails the train of arrogance - and so

The strong who dominates wanders confused

If Zainab wandered or was boastful

Still, her people are the beloved clan

The tribulations of events have brought about affinity between us

Love nestled until it paved the way for passion

Deaths roam the blue therein, prowling,

Though it is but a wave, coming and going

Ships appear on it diverse, as if they are

Gazelles viewed from afar, led on by a young one

Vessels bearing the banners of caesars, sovereigns

Of the land mounted upon them, gone by

    Racing against events, pursing them

    While troubles circle them, settling

Until the water beneath them nearly turns to blood

When their burdens join, lying in wait

I said, “Are these signs of judgement day I see?

Or is war closer than a vein and nearer?”

Peace, peace to the ark of Rome in the world

If only peace could be sought from oppressors

It is as if I see the tribulations of time

Overflowing your basin which strikes again and again

So one living comfortably was disturbed

And one safe now fears the zealotry

A refuge that prolonged the worries of people said

Kinder to them than any kindness, more bending

The peace of innocents in the care of the tireless

Yildiz who does not sleep or disappear

The Commander of the Faithful is a downpour

He saw the great tribulation and confronted its onslaught

And it faded, becoming embers kindling

I did not stop facing terrors until I plunged into them

And necessities can make one mount what cannot be mounted

I traverse the nights amid perils and gloom

To a horizon where the caliph is a star

To the kingdom of Uthman, around whose basin

    Stands towering, interwoven architecture, arched

A palace challenging the stars, perforated

Over the water, next to it a perforated palace

Towers whose eyes are lent by Manoun

With a glance at the maidens that does not disappoint

Pillars of innovation upon natural pillars

Whose homes in the clouds are nearly hidden

I stood confounded, glancing around, saying

“Is this an illusion of the Turkish borders, or do I imagine so?”

Never has an orient built the like

Nor has an occident built the like of the Turkish edifice

In its shadow are the formidable battleships

Ruins whose purpose they do not know, which they will destroy

When its arrow is launched between sea and rock

It is brought iron that does not veer and is balanced

Azrael aims it in the garb of a shooter

While the hands of demise and fate trained

Cannonballs whose essence the heat of the sun fears

Whenever they climb the slopes, thinking it will not align

When its flames are poured upon the ships

The surviving victors - so how about the losers?

Ask the Romans, do they have a trick for the ships?

Is there a protector among them but veering away?

Their flotillas wavered so the fires guided them

To sanity, then no more wavering

Neither the East in its flotilla feels safe

Nor the West in its flotilla reassured

I saw nothing but a bloodstained banner

    There, protected by bloodstained youth

So I said, who is the protector - a fierce Turk

    Or a tender gazelle groomed?

Or is it the conquering, struggling king who appeared?

Or the star over the Romans? Or you, Zainab?

You raised the daughters of the Turks, so she said

Do the daughters of beasts have the ferocity that amazes?

When homelands cry for help, the noble among us rush out

Bringing their husbands or themselves if no husband

The wives of the married unsheathe their swords

And the childless fight, defending their homeland

You witnessed war, oh gallant refined one

Describe it to us, for you are brave and cultured

She called, so the horses responded from all sides

And the steeds were alert, on guard

To the caller, quickly, as if a caller

To prayer, earning reward, from war

Circling the banner, as if it

Has over the banners a stronger refuge

    Just a call and response

And war collided with the untouched

I saw what you both did not see of scenes

Nor did a Bedouin or Arab ever witness

Colored mountains that do not shiver or panic

When a head falls or shoulder slumps

You were but the sword and fire mounted

And nothing the Turks found too heavy to mount

You ascended above the height of the enemies, and below

A narrow path like the throat of a lion, or more difficult

So it was like the Bridge of Judgement, no doubt

While they were the party of God, no sinners

They passed swiftly beneath the darkness

Smoke through which their specters danced

Bustling atop and below the mountains

As a torrent poured or a comet rushed

Your cannons empower them with fire

Like the fires of volcanoes, toiling away

It showers the essence of souls when ascending

And its slopes overflow when it descends

Its bullets embed in the heads of fortresses

And the tails of citadels, comet-like, calm down

When darkness obscured the helpers, victory emerged

    Crescent-like, veiled, and clear

The Romans retreated after their army

    Scattered, nearly vanishing

Two wings like the shape of scissors, and a heart

Spinning in war's heat, tossing and turning

Atop mountain peaks their groups wandered, lost

Climbing, not knowing where they're heading

Whether ascending, met by the white sword that seizes

Or descending, the red fire kindles

Of fear, nearly their homes flee

And the foundations are spared if a valley shelters them

The ground beneath them nearly swallows the ground

And some of the land bites and chews the rest

Their steps nearly outpace lightning in speed

And dazzle sights wherever they go

Their strides nearly sever the horizon from sights

And penetrate the furthest range, obscuring

Their slippers nearly touch the ground,

And if they found a way to the sky, they would climb

A rout without a router to spur them

Or a chaser calling them to it, obligating it

We stayed put, and no Roman youth missed finding

Fright to raid him, and another to loot him

We gained victory but did not gloat,

As what would further victors' gloating?

He fled, and the system of his soldiers did not

Alas, a wretched army conditioned for fleeing

Taking and driving regiments as an entourage

One for it, and one for shame, processioning

    Organized around him, yet wishing

The earth would split to hide them

Clad with fear, bitten by it

So in each robe a scorpion stings them

    Imagining horses from every direction

So delusion seizes them with dread

Behind them one moment, before them another

And for a time on every horizon, awakening

Horsemen in the mountains, length and breadth

If one peak hides, another appears

Wherever they stray, one with a lance comes out

And one from the belly of earth, battled

Descending upon them from its imagined sky

    Lightning, in which devastation melts

Visions which, if true, behind them are

God's angels who cannot be overcome

When Yildiz and we slept as enemies

In the plains, ears pricked, listening and guarding

And their young man stayed up while our young manned stayed up

One using the sword as a pillow, cautious

The other lost in his dreams, fancying

Are the two warriors equal - one comfortable

And naive, the other full of experience, tested?

We both protected Firsal's land and sky

And every path between was obstructed

Horsemen of God, not retreating or wavering

The finest earth where they are buried, perfumed

    Greetings of security and preservation

To one who spends his nights content, turning

And bury me in a revered, honored grave

Brought near by the Merciful in what He brings near

And chaos swept the streets, doctrines vanishing

And the spacious horizon narrowed between them

The citadels emptied of the soldiers

And the homes of its people, ruins spreading

By the thousands, wandering and dispersing

A few saved souls, with nothing but

One empty hand and another tossing and turning

A hand reaching in the crowds to loot

And to plunder what no foreigner plunders

Forgetting there the nursing mother and father

The horse plods with the years weighing on its leg

And the rider a woman carried by the horse

Others say is their enemies', doubting

A rider with riches that abandoned him

And another mingling goods before his eyes, looted

Nearly, from panic, their homes flee

And the foundations are saved if a valley swallows them

And if they found a way to the sky, they would climb

Rout without a routed, spurring them

No chaser, obligating them to this

Encountering a fright to raid him, or another to loot

It were the nest of an eagle, or named such

By an army, and for the stars to be covered, eclipsing?

And the bullets of demise, aligned and aimed

And the sun of day had not yet gone, setting

There the East lavished praise, the West reaching limits

And the House of Uthman hyperbolized

The defenses of Islam increased in glory and impregnability

And the age's ambitions were reined in, revering

We raised heads to the stars by your victory

And by the events we were aligning and directing

Whoever is descended from the state of cannons

Is descended from nothing but power and honor

Oh my people, where is the army you claimed?

And the maidens, and the solid, mounted defense?

Where is a hope in the commander that disappoints?

Where are the gangs for you that leap?

Where is what the papers told us about you?

And what its masters conveyed to you, exaggerating?
