1. قضى أريحيّ القوم والقوم من همو

    فكل لبيب بين جنبيه مأتم

    The tribe's chieftain passed away, and the people grieved for him

    Thus every wise man has a funeral in his heart

  2. غدا وغدونا والحياة تضمنا

    ورحنا وكم من ميِّت لا يقوم

    Tomorrow, and tomorrow we shall meet, while life embraces us

    And we wandered, and how many dead will not rise

  3. فهل خطب الأبرار بالليل ودّه

    فأصبح فيهم راضيا يتنعم

    Did the righteous speak their sorrows in the night?

    And in the morning find joy and contentment

  4. ألا إنما الدنيا نهار وليلة

    يذيعان ما تخفى الغيوب وتكتم

    Know that the life is but a day and a night

    That reveal what is hidden and concealed

  5. ولم ترق منذ الدهر للناس عَبرة

    إذا ضحك الباكي بكى المتبسم

    Never in this existence did people learn a lesson

    When the weeping laughs, the smiling cries

  6. أبا يوسف في كل نادٍ مناحة

    أرامل تبكى أو عوائل تلطم

    Oh Abu Yusuf, in every club there is lamentation

    Widows crying, families slapping their faces

  7. تغيّر للاحسان والجود معهد

    ونكّر للعرفان والعلم معلم

    The place of kindness and generosity has changed

    And gratitude and knowledge have lost their teacher

  8. لئن مت فالإنسان لا بدّ ميت

    ولكن رزء الناس بالحرّ مؤلم

    If man dies, he is bound to die

    But people's sadness for the free is painful

  9. وما عاش مجهول المكان محقر

    وما مات مرفوع المنار معظم

    No one lives unknown in obscurity

    And no one dies with raised minaret in glory

  10. وما المال إلا غصة فوق غصة

    إذا ما سقى المرء القضاء المحتم

    Wealth is but sorrow upon sorrow

    When fate gives man the destined bitter cup

  11. وإن الفتى في عيشه ما سعى له

    وإن الفتى من بعده ما يقدّم

    In his life the youth works not for what he desires

    And after him, he leaves no good deeds

  12. فما كان عند الناس فالناس ألسن

    وما كان عند الله فالله أكرم

    What people had, people's tongues tell the tale

    And what was God's, God grants the reward

  13. سراة بنى مصر طوى الموت حاتما

    فهل حاتم من جمعكم يتقدّم

    Leader of the Egyptians, death has folded its tent

    Has any of you replaced Hatim?

  14. خذوا الخير عنه وافعلوا مثل فعله

    فَلَلخَير في الدارين زين ومغنم

    Take the good from him and act as he did

    For in both abodes, good is beauty and profit

  15. أما وعظتكم ميتة زلزلت لها

    جوانب مصر والخلائق نوم

    Has not the death of your lifeless counsel

    Shaken the sides of Egypt and the people's sleep?

  16. أما راعكم نعش حوى ذلك الغنى

    وما فيه دينار ولا فيه درهم

    Is not your shepherd a bier containing that wealthy man

    With no money or coins inside?

  17. ويا أحمد الخيرات إنى ارتجلتها

    ودمعي ارتجالا خلف نعشك تسجم

    Oh Ahmad of virtues, I have improvised this

    With my tears flowing at your bier

  18. بكيت على الحرّ الهمام وفقده

    وهل حيلتي إلا البكا والترحم

    I wept for the honorable, brave man and his loss

    And what power have I but crying and condolence?

  19. وما الشعر إلا رجع حس وخاطر

    فمن خانه وجدانه خانه الفم

    Poetry is but the echo of emotion and thought

    He whose conscience betrays his mind, his mouth also betrays

  20. فخذها رثاء من وفىّ ولوعة

    يبثك إياها الفؤاد المكلم

    So take this elegy from a loyal grieved one

    Whose heart dictates it to you

  21. لقد كانت الآمال فيك كثيرة

    وهل تنقض الآمال والله مبرم

    Great were the hopes placed upon you

    And does God not fulfill hopes?

  22. وما ابنك إلا الخير من صلب خير

    فِلم لا يرجى فيه أو يُتوسم

    Your son is none but goodness from the loins of goodness

    Why should not hope be expected of him?

  23. ستعليك ذكرا فوق معن وحاتم

    أياد على هذا الأنام وأنعم

    Your memory shall rise above Ma'n and Hatim

    Noble hands upon these people and blessings
