1. كُلَّ يَومٍ مِهرَجانٌ كَلَّلوا

    فيهِ مَيتاً بِرَياحينَ الثَناء

    Every day a festival they crowned

    Within it a dead man with praise scents

  2. لَم يُعَلِّم قَومَهُ حَرفاً وَلَم

    يُضِىءِ الأَرضَ بِنورِ الكَهرُباء

    He did not teach his people a craft, nor

    Illuminate the earth with the light bulb

  3. جومِلَ الأَحياءُ فيهِ وَقَضى

    شَهَواتَ أَهلِهِ وَالأَصدِقاء

    His living loved ones gathered in it and fulfilled

    The desires of his family and friends

  4. ما أَضَلَّ الناسَ حَتّى المَوتُ لَم

    يَخلُ مِن زورٍ لَهُم أَو مِن رِياء

    He did not mislead people until death

    Was empty of lies for them or hypocrisy

  5. إِنَّما يُبكى شُعاعٌ نابِغٌ

    كُلَّما مَرَ بِهِ الدَهرُ أَضاء

    It is only a brilliant ray wept over

    Whenever time passed by it illuminated

  6. مَلَأَ الأَفواهَ وَالأَسماعَ في

    ضَجَّةِ المَحيا وَفي صَمتِ الفَناء

    It filled mouths and ears amidst

    The clamor of the alive and the silence of demise

  7. حائِطُ الفَنِّ وَباني رُكنِهِ

    مَعبَدُ الأَلحانِ إِسحَقُ الغِناء

    The wall of art and its pillar’s builder

    The temple of melodies is Isaac, the singing

  8. مِن أُناسٍ كَالدَراري جُدُدٍ

    في سَمَواتِ اللَيالي قُدَماء

    Of people like the Pleiades renewed

    In the heavens of nights ancient

  9. غَرَسَ الناسُ قَديماً وَبَنَوا

    لَم يَدُم غَرسٌ وَلَم يَخلُد بِناء

    They planted long ago and built

    No planting lasted nor building immortalized

  10. غَيرَ غَرسٍ نابِغٍ أَو حَجَرٍ

    عَبقَرِيٍّ فيهُما سِرُّ البَقاء

    Except a brilliant planting or a stone

    Of a genius in both the secret of survival

  11. مِن يَدٍ مَوهوبَةٍ مُلهَمَةٍ

    تَغرِسُ الإِحسانَ أَو تَبني العَلاء

    From a gifted inspired hand

    That plants benevolence or builds sublime

  12. بُلبُلٌ إِسكَندَرِيٌّ أَيكُهُ

    لَيسَ في الأَرضِ وَلَكِن في السَماء

    A nightingale Alexandrian, is it you

    Not on earth, but in the sky

  13. هَبَطَ الشاطِئَ مِن رابِيَةٍ

    ذاتِ ظِلٍّ وَرَياحينَ وَماء

    It descended the coast from a lofty

    Place of shade, fragrance and water

  14. يَحمِلُ الفَنَّ نَميراً صافِياً

    غَدَقَ النَبعِ إِلى جيلٍ ظِماء

    Bearing pure, delicate art

    The spring overflowed to a thirsty generation

  15. حَلَّ في وادٍ عَلى فُسحَتِهِ

    عَزَّتِ الطَيرُ بِهِ إِلّا الحِداء

    It settled in a valley, in its expanse

    All birds were honored by it except the screeching

  16. يَملَأُ الأَسحارَ تَغريداً إِذا

    صَرَفَ الطَيرَ إِلى الأَيكِ العِشاء

    It fills the dawns with trilling when

    It turns the birds to the nests for supper

  17. رُبَّما اِستَلهَمَ ظَلماءَ الدُجى

    وَأَتى الكَوكَبَ فَاِستَوحى الضِياء

    It may inspire the darkness of night

    And comes to the planet so draws illumination

  18. وَرَمى أُذَنيهِ في ناحِيَةٍ

    يَخلِسُ الأَصواتَ خَلسَ البَبَّغاء

    And casts its ears in a direction

    To catch voices secretly like the parrot

  19. فَتَلَقّى فيهِما ما راعَهُ

    مِن خَفِيِّ الهَمسِ أَو جَهرِ النِداء

    So it receives in them what moves it

    Of the hidden whispers or loud calling

  20. أَيُّها الدَرويشُ قُم بُثَّ الجَوى

    وَاِشرَحِ الحُبَّ وَناجِ الشُهَداء

    O dervish, get up and spread the talk

    And explain love and whisper to the martyrs

  21. اِضرِبِ العودَ تَفُه أَوتارُهُ

    بِالَّذي تَهوى وَتَنطِقُ ما تَشاء

    Strum the lute, its strings chant

    What you desire and speak what you wish

  22. حَرِّكِ النايَ وَنُح في غابِهِ

    وَتَنَفَّس في الثُقوبِ الصُعَداء

    Move the flute and moan in its forest

    And breathe in its steep hollows

  23. وَاِسكُبِ العَبرَةَ في آماقِهِ

    مِن تَباريحَ وَشَجوٍ وَعَزاء

    And pour sorrow in its depths

    Of crying, passion and mourning

  24. وَاِسمُ بِالأَرواحِ وَاِدفَعها إِلى

    عالَمِ اللُطفِ وَأَقطارِ الصَفاء

    And roam with the souls and send them to

    The world of subtlety and lands of serenity

  25. لا تُرِق دَمَعاً عَلى الفَنِّ فَلَن

    يَعدِمَ الفَنُّ الرُعاةَ الأُمَناء

    Do not shed a tear for art, for it will not

    Lack shepherds and caretakers

  26. هُوَ طَيرُ اللَهِ في رَبوَتِهِ

    يَبعَثُ الماءَ إِلَيهِ وَالغِذاء

    It is God’s bird in His care

    He sends it water and food

  27. رَوَّحَ اللهُ عَلى الدُنيا بِهِ

    فَهيَ مِثلُ الدارِ وَالفَنُّ الفِناء

    God breezed over the world through it

    So it is like the house and art perishes

  28. تَكتَسي مِنهُ وَمِن آذارِهِ

    نَفحَةَ الطيبِ وَإِشراقِ البَهاء

    It dresses in its fragrance

    And the splendor of beauty

  29. وَإِذا ما حُرِمَت رِقَّتَهُ

    فَشَتِ القَسوَةُ فيها وَالجَفاء

    And if deprived of its tenderness

    Harshness and aridity spread in it

  30. وَإِذا ما سَئِمَت أَو سَقِمَت

    طافَ كَالشَمسِ عَلَيها وَالهَواء

    And if it grew bored or sick

    It circulated like the sun and air over it

  31. وَإِذا الفَنُّ عَلى المُلكِ مَشى

    ظَهَرَ الحُسنُ عَلَيهِ وَالرُواء

    And if art walked with the kingdom

    Beauty and prosperity appeared through it

  32. قَد كَسا الكَرنَكُ مِصراً ما كَسا

    مِن سَنىً أَبلى اللَيالي وَسَناء

    The karnak dressed Egypt like no

    Clothing eroded by nights and years

  33. يُرسِلُ اللَهُ بِهِ الرُسلَ عَلى

    فَتَراتٍ مِن ظُهورٍ وَخَفاء

    God sends messengers through it at

    Intervals of appearing and hiding

  34. كُلَّما أَدّى رَسولٌ وَمَضى

    جاءَ مَن يوفي الرِسالاتِ الأَداء

    Whenever a messenger fulfilled and left

    One who completes the messages came

  35. سَيِّدَ الفَنِّ اِستَرِح مِن عالَمٍ

    آخِرُ العَهدِ بِنُعماهُ البَلاء

    Master of art, rest from a world

    Whose last era afflicted it with ordeals

  36. رُبَّما ضِقتَ فَلَم تَنعَم بِهِ

    وَسَرى الوَحيُ فَنَسّاكَ الشَقاء

    Perhaps you were frustrated so did not enjoy it

    And revelation flowed, forgetting your misery

  37. لَقَدِ اِستَخلَفتَ فَنّاً نابِغاً

    دَفَعَ الفَنُّ إِلَيهِ بِاللِواء

    You have deputized brilliant art

    Art handed over the banner to it

  38. إِنَّ في مُلكِ فُؤادٍ بُلبُلاً

    لَم يُتَح أَمثالُهُ لِلخُلَفاء

    In the kingdom of a heart is a nightingale

    The likes of it unparalleled by caliphs

  39. ناحِلٌ كَالكُرَةِ الصُغرى سَرى

    صَوتُهُ في كُرَةِ الأَرضِ الفَضاء

    A chanter like the small sphere flowed

    Its voice in the sphere of the vast space

  40. يَستَحي أَن يَهتِفَ الفَنُ بِهِ

    وَجَمالُ العَبقَرِيّاتِ الحَياء

    Art is too shy to chant it

    And the beauty of genius is modesty
