1. مقادير من جفنيك حوّلن حاليا

    فذقت الهوى من بعد ما كنت خاليا

    Measures from your eyelids have changed my state

    So I have tasted passion after I was empty

  2. نفذن علىّ اللب بالسهم مرسلا

    وبالسحر مقضيا وبالسيف قاضيا

    They penetrated my heart with an unleashed arrow

    And with magic predetermined and with a sword judging

  3. وألبستني ثوب الضنى فلبسته

    فأحبِب به ثوبا وإن ضم باليا

    And you dressed me in the garment of yearning, so I wore it

    And came to love it as a garment, though it squeezed me

  4. وما الحب إلا طاعة وتجاوز

    وإن اكثروا اوصافه والمعانيا

    For love is nothing but obedience and excess

    Though they multiply its descriptions and meanings

  5. وما هو إلا العين بالعين تلتقى

    وإن نوّعوا اسبابه والدواعيا

    It is nothing but the eye meeting the eye

    Though they vary its causes and motives

  6. وعند الهوى موصفه لا صفاته

    إذا سالوني ما الهوى قلت مابيا

    In passion, its description not its qualities

    If they ask me what is passion, I say I do not know

  7. وبي رشا قد كان دنياى حاضرا

    فغادرني اشتاق دنياى نائيا

    And a loved one who had made my world present

    Left me yearning for my distant world

  8. سمحت بروحي في هواه رخيصة

    ومن يهو لا يؤثر على الحب غاليا

    I allowed my soul in his love to go cheap

    And he who loves does not prefer anything over love

  9. ولم تجر الفاظ الواشة برية

    كهذى التي يجرى بها الدمع واشيا

    Nor did the flowing words of she-camels wander wild

    Like these with which the tear flows streaming

  10. اقول لمن ودعت والركب سائر

    برغم فؤادي سائر بفؤاديا

    I say to the one I bade farewell as the caravan travels

    Despite my heart travelling, my heart travels with it

  11. امانا لقلبي من جفونك في الهوى

    كفى بالهوى كاسا وراحا وساقيا

    My heart is safe from your eyelids in passion

    Enough of passion being a cup, rest and cupbearer

  12. ولا تجعليه بين خديك والنوى

    من الظلم ان يغدو لنارَيك صاليا

    And do not make it between your cheek and target

    From injustice that it becomes a frequenter of your fires

  13. ولي ملك ملء الفؤاد محبب

    جمعت الهوى في مدحه والقوافيا

    And I have a king filling my heart, beloved

    Who I combined passion for in praise and poetry

  14. وما الشعر إلا خطرة او سريرة

    تصوغهما لفظا إلى النفس ساريا

    For poetry is but an idea or a secret

    Which it shapes into words that flow into the soul

  15. فتى الشرق فت العالمين مكارما

    ومن قبل فت النيران معاليا

    O youth of the East who opened the worlds with virtues

    And before that opened fires with glories

  16. سموت فلم تستبق للمجد غاية

    تسوم السها هذى الخطى والمساعيا

    You ascended and did not outrun any limit of glory

    Those steps and efforts rake the Pleiades

  17. واطيبُ من قرب الحبيب على رضى

    مقامك في دار السعادة راضيا

    And sweeter than the nearness of the beloved in consent

    Is your stay in the abode of bliss, pleased

  18. وما زلت في ملك الخليفة اولا

    وإن كنت في نادى الخليفة ثانيا

    And I have not ceased being foremost in the Caliph’s reign

    Though I was second in the Caliph’s circle

  19. ولو سئل الإسلام ماذا يريده

    لما اختار إلا ان تديما التلاقيا

    And if Islam were asked what it wants

    It would choose nothing but your continued harmony

  20. فبينكما في الدين ودّ ورحمة

    وفي الملك عهد الله ان لا تجافيا

    For between you is affection and mercy in religion

    And in the kingdom, God's covenant not to turn from each other

  21. وللودّ دل لا يكدِّر صفوه

    ولكن كثيرا ما يغر الأعاديا

    And affection has a guide not muddying its purity

    But often the enemies tempt and excite

  22. تقبل عزيز المالكين تحية

    تقدّمها مصر وتهدى التهانيا

    Receive, honoured sovereign, a greeting

    Brought forth by Egypt and gifts conveyed

  23. طلعت عليها والضحى في ربوعها

    فيا حسنه يوما بشمسيه زاهيا

    It rose upon it while the dawn was in its meadows

    So oh beautiful day with its solar radiance

  24. عروس سماء الشرق انت جمالها

    إذا زُيّنت كنت الحلى والمجاليا

    Bride of the eastern sky, you are its beauty

    When adorned, you were the adornment and fineries

  25. تغيّب حينا حسنها وشبابها

    وقد ملات منها الغداة النواحيا

    It hides for a time its beauty and youth

    And it had filled its horizons from it

  26. نشرت جلال الملك فيها وعزه

    واعلامه موسومة والعواليا

    It spread the majesty of the kingdom in it, and its might

    And its flags marked with triumphs and heights

  27. واقبلتَ كالدنيا إذا هي اقبلت

    وكالدهر حال الصفو لو دام صافيا

    And you came like the world when it comes

    And like time in purity if it lasted clear

  28. تشير بوجه ذى جلال وراحة

    يفيضان في الناس الهدى والأياديا

    You gesture with a face of majesty and calm

    From which guidance and favors pour unto the people

  29. فهذا هو البدر استقرّ به السرى

    وهذا سحاب الجود القى المراسيا

    For this is the full moon that settled the course

    And these are the clouds of generosity that sent down the poles
