The fleet set sail, engulfed by the waters,

Confined by him who inspires hope.

    The turbulent ocean embraced it,

Its vastness made spacious by the sky.

Those who escaped land saw a net,

    Cast by Fate the Plotter.

    Mountains, surging amongst mountains,

    Swaying as shadows do.

A din, as horses prepared for battle

And passions were provoked to rage.

    Surge upon surge upon surge,

As the desert sways with dunes.

    Ship glimpsing now and then,

Its ghosts concealed by the obscure.

Rising and falling on its course,

As valleys are shaken by storms.

My Lord, if You will, the sky is confined,

And if you will, the confined is sky.

So make the sea a refuge, send mercy through it,

Make the winds and clouds kind.

You are friend when humans are far,

    You are life and revival.

It tosses and turns but Your streams

Surround it, luminescent on all sides.

When it rises that is Your decree,

When it rages that is Your plea.

When Your majesty overcomes it, it bows down

    In awe, becoming like earth.

The broad and tall-- a missive to You--

    Bearing greetings and praise.

O eras of the seas without you

The sorrowful eras would not delight.

Long ago, without you the earth was despondent,

And the waters were forced by sail.

The empire of the seas reached the East

And existence became as it willed.

    We built--no structure humbled us,

    We climbed--no height surpassed us.

    We ruled--yet kings were slaves,

    And all commoners--captives.

Tell the Pyramids, you built and towered

    But never surpassed Egypt's structures.

    The impossible cannot be--

That mountains are moved on a whim,

And the heavens reached out to.

The Jinn fell short of Pharaoh's resolve

And were tamed by his might.

He built what no era built, nor did

Any age construct, nor builder erect.

    A temple where creeds disappear,

They and people and ages are naught but mist.

    Tombs where nights are buried

    And dawn and evening concealed.

The sun and planets shy from them

As do iron, wear and evanescence.

They claimed they were pillars built

By the tyranny of darkness incarnate.

So absolve the envious among them--

Flattery of the envious is arduous indeed.

The people and the commoners were destroyed

In its construction, and the captives.

    Where was destiny, justice, wisdom?

    Where intellect, advice and wit?

The enlightened sons of Egypt's sun,

And the sciences that give light?

They claimed the empty claims of our mean Athens,

    Their allegations--pure slander and lies.

They viewed as glory for those who ruled and built

    To enslave the enemy--what glory!

If it is other than what I claim, I disown

Such empty pride, for it is vain.

Would that the days had not ruined you, would that

For your kingdom's reign hope had not ended.

Thus is the way of time--a state then its opposite,

    No state with time endures.

May the chronicles forget you, O Cambyses' era,

May no news or tales carry your memory.

The wheel turned against you, and an arduous hand

Afflicted this nation on that day.

One who insightfully reflects upon what you yielded Egypt

Sees the cure lies nowhere but removal.

    Permanent misery and lasting woe,

    Agony whose agony intensifies.

You brought the people and the subjects grief

In which people and dwellings suffered equally.

    The mighty made slaves, obedient,

And souls of the mighty made slave girls.

For if you own souls, seek their pleasure,

For in them lies tumult and resolution.

    Beasts are tamed if captured,

    How then humans, rational beings?

The unjust deem they will dominate,

    And the weak remain unsupported.

Yet nights have sentiments like those who harbored them.

And for times there are like desires.

Egypt dwelled in darkness until told:

The sun has died and all light vanished.

That was not a blindness--for no eye

Where night seals off its light, sees.

    Loyalty called out her children,

And they responded from the graves.

They removed the enemy from her,

And the crusts from her eyelids.

    Bygone glory was restored,

And the forefathers' heights scaled by their progeny.

    Time returned in magnificence

    With magnificent forebears.

    Like Ramses among recent kings,

Yet to Ramses, kings are ransoms.

In young Seti's heart, hopes were pledged,

When longing for him overcame them.

The servants prepared for the greatest birth,

    As the horizon adorned herself.

    Sesostris was distinguished at birth,

In his childhood, miracles and favors abound.

We heard of the boy who pardons,

    Customary at infancy--caprice and play.

He sees people and kings as equal,

Yet are people and kings equal?

    When flatterers circle him,

    His nature spurns their deviousness.

In his heart the fancy of words creeps,

Sweet yet sickness, charming yet fraud.

White hair of the mature--a raven,

    Radiant dawn--gloomy eve.

    Sesostris rose above disposition,

    And the company of fools.

He sought the heights, attained a place,

    None similar nor peers obtained.

Armies rose by his will to power,

The banner under which the living race.

A presence ruled and the wise speak,

    As judges and sages decree.

Constructions cease not, wishing they could

    Attain its lifespan and permanence.

    Sciences reviving lands--glories of lands,

Pride of poets and height of eras.

O Sesostris what can describe you,

When titles and names fall short?

For you are Amon, the crescent when full,

    The sun, brilliance and fathers.

For you are rural and urban Egypt,

    Crowned over the lofty throne.

For you are institutions in every sea,

Yours is the land, its earth and sky.

Would that time had not ruined you, would that

For the land's kingdom hope in you had not ended.

Thus is the way of time--a state then its opposite,

    No state with time endures.

History did not favor you, O day of Cambyses,

No news or tales carry your memory.

The wheel turned against you, and an arduous hand

Afflicted this nation on that day.

One who insightfully reflects upon what you yielded Egypt

Sees the cure lies nowhere but removal.

    Permanent misery and lasting woe,

    Agony whose agony intensifies.

A foreign hand ruling the Egyptian,

    Without mercy for the Egyptian.

One who asks the Nile be built upon

A state whose width is the land and sky.

    Dreams of Egypt by night,

    Seen by emperors as quarry.

    Their envoys kept coming,

As its oceans flowed the banners.

Had the Franciscan summoned Rome's name,

Words from Rome would have borne it away.

Every state knew we were targeted,

For we are their poison and plague.

Conqueror of the age and realms--Napoleon--

Yet his great commanders betrayed him.

He came rashly and left the same,

And before him, its nobles were reckless.

Silent at his taunts were the Pyramids,

    But their silence--derision.

Suggesting to him Waterloo, where are the armies?

Where are the banners and great warriors?

He came impetuously and was gone the same,

And before him, its nobles were reckless.

Rome was quiet when he insulted her,

    But her silence--derision.

Suggesting to him Waterloo, where are the armies?

Where are the banners and great warriors?

The British coveted the Nile, to build upon it

A state whose breadth encompassed the heavens and earth.

Rome dreamed of possessing it nightly,

Seen by its emperors as prey.

Their delegates kept arriving in succession,

As its guardians flowed the banners.

Every nation knew we were preyed upon,

For we are their poison and plague.

Vanquisher of the era and realms--Britain--

Yet its great leaders betrayed it.

It came to loot the land rapaciously,

Surrounded by its fellow vultures, ravenous.

Coveting the Nile, to construct upon it

A realm spanning the earth and skies.

Rome dreamed of ruling it nightly,

    Envisioned by its esteemed Caesars.

    Its envoys frequented in succession,

    Observed by Sudan's sentries.

Had the Jesuit but invoked Rome's name,

Rome's responses would have carried consent.

Each state knew we were targeted,

As their poison and ruin we are known.

The British Eagle swooped down to loot and plunder,

    Its horde--eagles circling, starving.

It craved the Nile, to establish upon it

A nation whose width is the land and sky.

Rome dreamed of possessing it nightly,

Envisioned by its Caesars and great warriors.

Their delegates kept arriving in succession,

    Watched by Sudan's sentinels.

Had the Franciscan but summoned Rome's name,

Rome's replies would have brought deliverance.

Every country knew we were preyed upon,

For we are their bane and scourge.

Vanquisher of the age and kingdoms--Britain--

Yet its commanding generals betrayed it.

The Ottoman's despotism ruled over them,

A harsh state in eras indeed.

    In Egypt--a silent instrument.

Taking money from those unable to pay,

Vows made, yet unfulfilled--naught but air.

Contentment is gained by consent on issues

    None content with even partially.

So wisdom and caution are used to protect the morrow,

For caution is wisdom and guile.

The eagle swooped down, pillaging bountifully,

    Its horde--eagles hoarding, starving.

It craved the Nile, to construct upon it

A reign whose breadth is the land and sky.

Rome coveted it nights, by its Caesars fantasized,

Dreamt by its great men since yonder.

Its messengers came in succession, observed

By the Mamluks whom it had overpowered.

Had this Jesuit spoken Rome's name,

Consent would have come from Rome unfurled.

Every state knew we were targeted,

As their plague and ruin we are known.

Vanquisher of the age and realms--Britain--

    Though its generals refused subjugation.

An avaricious nation set on ruining,

Prepared by women--the route to evil.

They seduced its Caesars from Rome, the refuge,

And the swords by which they sought refuge.

Conqueror of enemies and legions, no matter

How violent the chaos and fierce the meeting.

One not controlled by women nor captivated

By the tempting whispers of maidens.

Hero of both empires, guardian of Rome,

Whom desires lead not, nor passions enslave.

He ruled and she was in the serpent's grasp,

Far from rule and blind desire.

    She took Cleopatra's life--marvel that

She relieved the world of Cleopatra!

She failed at deception yet thought herself ransom,

    Diminished herself--meager ransom indeed!

Ask how she was lured from loyalty to Rome,

Oh my Lord, from women what is borne!

Thus Rome triumphed, yet she was misery,

Thus are the ways of enemies.

To Rome belonged the empire she lost

    Secretly loyal, overtly disowned.

    Corruption spread in this land,

    As demons roamed tempting.

God willed it cleansed by the sword,

    Washed by blood of sins.

And thus souls are diseased, each limb

    At times ransom for another.

God did not neglect believers, but

The ignorant are ruined by ignorance.

    And when sins abound, overpower,

    Then justice mandates overpowering retribution.

Darkness enveloped East and West after Caesar,

    Blanketing the land in darkness.

    The world in misguidance exacerbated,

    Ignorance spreading, people ignorant.

Some perceived the divine as but a person,

Or a flame, or a barren stone.

    Passions turned souls to idols,

Until all desires to them channeled.

So God willed cleansing by the sword,

To wash away sins, blood the cleanser.

Its nations ignored for eras without scriptures nor prophets,

    Wandered in passions diverse ways.

United in truth, diverse in means,

Until came whom all means lead.

We clung to You before the prophets,

    Limbs aligning in Your love.

Had the darkness of ignorance not led us astray,

We would have found the way to You.

We adopted names for You numerous,

Then all names became Yours, Mohammad arrived.

We sought magic until came magic,

    Subjugating magic through his staff.

    God wanted reverence of intellect,

    Not disregard of thought.

    Pharaoh deemed Moses a loyalist,

Yet loyalty at times is traitorous!

His calculations on the day his Lord summoned omitted

    That requital can counterbalance deed.

Alone is obeyed, not mortal prophets.

Moses belongs to Egypt in loyalty, and Moses

To Egypt, if ancestry and belonging.

Its pride in the Supported makes it proud, no matter

How much it shunned the Sublime Herald briefly.
