لا والقوام الذي والأعين اللاتي
ما خنت رب القنا والمشرفيات
Not by the eyes that did not betray the Master of Qena and its minarets,
Nor by my heart that never indulged in thoughts of you in past or future,
ولا سلوت ولم أهمم ولا خطرت
بالبال سلواك في ماض ولا آتى
Nor by my soul that never desired the arrows of your glances to pierce my heart,
Seeing the impossible in you.
ولا أردت لسهم اللحظ في كبدي
ردا رأى لي في المستحيلات
Blame falls on me from all sides,
Yet none reaches me but whispers.
ويذهب اللوم بي في كل ناحية
فلا يبلّغني إلا صُبابات
You are seduced by the slanderer, trusting him
Like a child paying heed to myths.
وأنت تطرب للواشي وتطمعه
كالطفل ألقى بسمع للخرافات
Arrows, when reaching their mark,
Have errors like successes.
إن السهام إذا ما واصلت غرضا
كانت خواطئها مثل المصيبات
The arrow your eyelids unleashed randomly
Fate insisted should go astray.
وسهم جفنيك ما أرسلته عرضا
أبى القضاء له إلا رميّات
From my heart to mind to liver
To guidance, oblivion and passions,
فمن فؤادي إلى لبي إلى كبدي
إلى رشادي فإغفائي فلذاتي
To me, you are none but the gazelle
In her eyes and self, some say literally.
وما الغزالة إلا أنت في نظري
بعينها ويقول البعض بالذات
The king’s seal fulfills all needs
Your desired mouth fulfills all my needs
وخاتم الملك للحاجات مطَّلب
وثغرك المتمنى كل حاجاتي
Tell him to perfect his love
You are haven for orphans and damsels
فقل له يتمت في الحب مهجته
وأنت مأوى اليتامي واليتميات
Welcome O cavalcade of highness and glory,
Caravan of prides and fortunes,
أهلا بركب العلى والعز قاطبة
وفد المفاخر طرّا والسعادات
Welcome, settled or roaming,
God blessed you with greetings.
ومرحبا بك في حل ومرتحل
وخصك الله منه بالتحيات
Still you rain down Egypt, flooding it
Rain is best when timely.
ما زلت تظمئ مصرا ثم تمطرها
والغيث أفضل ما يأتي بميقات
Your caravan marched from shore to land
As ancestors marched to end misery.
مشت ركابك من ثغر إلى بلد
مشى الجدود إلى محو الشقاوات
My Lord, wherever its procession went
For God’s banner in crowds’ hands,
وإن مولاي من سارت مواكبه
لراية الله في أيدي الجماعات
If honored, they saw in its shade an honor
And met goodness with good intentions.
إن شرفوها رأوا في ظلها شرفا
واستقبلوا الخير نياتٍ بنيات
The Sa`id smiled, best revelry,
Renewing it with royal feasts.
يممت ثغر سعيد خير محتفل
تعيدها حفلات قيصريات
How often its glories and graces
Showed nations’ glory and rulers’ determination.
كم مثلت بمجاليها ورونقها
جد الشعوب وإقدام الحكومات
In Egypt, people toured its field
As histories tell of ruins.
والقوم في مصر ما طافوا بملعبها
إلا كما شهد الغر الروايات
Until water flowed gold in its midst
Watering kingdoms never sated, regions never quenched.
حتى جرى الماء من أثنائها ذهبا
يسقى ممالك لا تَروىَ ودولات
Every table in creation crowded
Egypt behind them, feast maker
فكل مائدة بالخلق حافلة
ومصر من خلفهم طاهي الوليمات
Why not live up to masters who were
Righteous strangers, by ancestors and nobles.
هلا بررنا بسادات لنا سلفوا
بِر الغريب بأسلاف وسادات
When praised, benefactors win it
Among us, nobles win blame
إذا المدائح فاز المحسنون بها
فاز الكرام لدينا بالمذمات
How great might Ismail be if fate
Granted him bliss in Egypt, impossible!
ما كان أعظم إسماعيل لو سلمت
له السعادة في مصر وهيهات
If others built what represented him
His glory represented in a mirror
إن شيدوا لسواه ما يمثله
فمجده فيه تمثيل بمرآة
A people who earn reward during life
And when dead are bid farewell with honors
قوم ينال جزاء السعي حيهمو
فإن قضى شيَّعوه بالكرامات
Immortalized after as a good example
Remaining through ages a sign of reward
وصيروه مثالا بعده حسنا
يبقى مدى الدهر عنوان المكافاة
Were it not for outstanding individuals
The reasonable would live among the dead
لولا مفاخر أفراد نعدّهمو
لعاش ذو العقل حيا بين أموات
So perpetuate your memory by achievements
And seek eternity by endeavor
فأحيِ ذكرك في الدنيا بمأثره
وأدرك الخلد في الدنيا بمسعاة
My Lord, Egypt’s people now elated
Passing among them a cup of joy
مولاى مصر بنوها اليوم في طرب
تدار بينهم كأس المسرات
The astrologer made claims dividing them
That they won’t see you, and will regret
قال المنجم أقوالا فروّعهم
أن لا يروك فيقضوا بالندامات
When you returned, they knew
The astrologer’s aim in those rumors
حتى إذا عدت يا دنيا همو عرفوا
قصد المنجم من تلك الإذاعات
Does ill appear or show guilt?
While your blessings are moons and halos
أيظهر النحس أم يبدو له ذنب
والسعد منك بأقمار وهالات
People asked with no rest
Does earth shrink or flow for unknown goals?
تساءل الناس حتى لا قرار لهم
أَتَقصر الأرض أم تجرى لغايات
They feared for it and for its collapse
From what befalls them of arising
خافوا عليها والهتهم قيامتها
عما يمرّ عليهم من قيامات
They refused permanence for the world and its people
When a day comes and goes, another rises
أبي الإقامة للدنيا وساكنها
يوم يدول وضوء ذاهب آتى
All extend for us ropes of mortality
And all after us subject to ropes
كل يمدّ حَبالات الفناء لنا
والكل من بعدنا رهن الحبالات
The star must have a day it declines
Though it grasps means to ascend the heavens
لا بدّ للنجم من يوم يزل به
وإن تناول أسباب السموات
