1. أخذتِ السماء يا دار ركنا

    وأويت الكواكب الزهر سُكنى

    You took a corner of the sky, O abode

    And hosted the stars as residents

  2. وجمعت السعادتين فباتت

    فيك دنيا الصلاح للدين خِدنا

    You brought together two happinesses, so they spent the night

    In you, the worldly life upright for religion a supporter

  3. نادَما الدهر في ذَراك وفضا

    من سلاف الوداد دَنا فدنا

    The days regretted in your tiny space

    From the good old days, drew nearer and nearer

  4. وإذا الخُلق كان عقد وداد

    لم ينل منه من وشَى وتجنى

    And if people are a necklace of friendship

    None who envied or betrayed could obtain any of it

  5. وأرى العلم كالعبادة في أبـ

    ـعد غاياته إلى الله أدنى

    And I see knowledge as equal to worship in

    Its farthest goals, nearer to God

  6. واسع الساح يرسل الفكر فيها

    كل من شك ساعة أو تظنى

    Vast and easy, it sends the mind therein

    Whoever doubted for a moment or suspected

  7. هل سألنا أبا العلاء وإن قلّـ

    ـب عينا في عالم الكون وسنى

    Did we ask Abu Al-‘Alaa’ even if sadness

    Struck the eye in the world of existence and forgot

  8. كيف يهذِى بخالق الطير من لم

    يعلم الطير هل بكى أو تغنى

    How can one who doesn’t know birds, babble about their Creator

    Whether it cried or sang, he wouldn’t know

  9. أنتِ كالشمس رفرفا والسماكـ

    ـين رواقا والمجرّة صحنا

    You are like the sun, fluttering, and the heavens

    A porch, and the galaxy a platter

  10. لو تسترت كنت كالقبة الغرا

    ء ذيلا من الجلال وردنا

    If you hid, you would be like an honored dome

    A train of glory and our pillar

  11. إن تكن للثواب والبر دارا

    كيف إن تمت الملاوة قرنا

    If you were a house of reward and righteousness

    How could you allow evil to join you

  12. لا تَعدِّى السنين إن ذكر العـ

    ـلم فما تعلمين للعلم سنا

    Do not count the years, if the mention of knowledge

    For you do not know an age limit for knowledge

  13. سوف تفنى في ساحتيك الليالي

    وهو باق على المدى ليس يفنى

    The nights will end on your field

    While it remains eternal, it will not perish

  14. يا عكاظا حوى الشبا فصاحا

    قرشيين في المجامع لُسنا

    O Ukaz, which gathered the youth and the eloquent

    Qurashis in the gatherings as our tongues

  15. بثهم في كنانة الله نورا

    من ظلام على البصائر أخنى

    They sowed in the bosom of God a light

    From darkness upon the sights it extinguished

  16. علَّموا بالبيان لا غرباء

    فيه يوما ولا أعاجم لُكنا

    They taught with eloquence, no strangers among them

    Ever, nor mute foreigners

  17. فتية محسنون لم يخلفوا العـ

    ـلم رجاء ولا المعلم ظنا

    Righteous young men who did not abandon knowledge hoping

    Nor the teacher expecting

  18. صدعوا ظلمة على الريف حلت

    وأضاءوا الصعيد سهلا وحزنا

    They ripped apart the darkness that descended on the countryside

    And illuminated the flatlands and mountains

  19. من قضى منهم تفرق فكرا

    في نهى النشء أو تقسم ذهنا

    Whoever passed away among them, his thoughts dispersed

    In deterring the youth or preoccupying minds

  20. ناد دار العلوم إن شئت يا عا

    يش أو شئت نادها يا سُكَينا

    Call the House of Knowledge if you will, O settler

    Or call it if you will, O our pillar

  21. قل لها يا ابنة المبارك إيه

    قد جرت كاسمه أمورك يمنا

    Tell it: O daughter of the blessed, indeed

    Its affairs have gone favorably, as its name

  22. هو في المهرجان حى شهيد

    يجتلى غرس فضله كيف أجنى

    He is alive in festivals, martyred

    His excellence sprouting, how can I deny?

  23. وهو في العرس إن تحجّب أو لم

    يحتجب والد العروس المهنا

    And he is at the wedding, whether veiled or not

    The groom's father, happy

  24. ما جرى ذكره بناديك حتى

    وقف الدمع في الشؤون فأثنى

    What was mentioned calling your name, until

    Tears paused in sorrows, so it praised

  25. رب خير ملئت منه سرورا

    ذكّر الخيرين فاهتجت حزنا

    Blessings filled with joy from it

    Reminding the good, so it stirred sorrow

  26. أدرى إذ بناك أن كان يبني

    فوق أنف العدوّ للضاد حصنا

    I know, for He built you

    A fortress over the enemy’s snout to the letter a protector

  27. حائط الملك بالمدارس إن شئـ

    ـت وإن شئت بالمعاقل يبني

    The King’s wall with schools if you will

    Or with fortresses if you will, he builds

  28. أنظر الناس هل ترى لحياة

    عَطَلت من نباهة الذكر معنى

    Look at the people, do you see any meaning for a life

    That disabled the vitality of mention?

  29. لا الغني في الرجال ناب عن الفضـ

    ـل وسلطانه ولا الجاه أغنى

    Not the rich man in men failed the merit and its sovereignty, nor status made independent

    How many roamed the land but did not make it theirs

  30. رب عاث في الأرض لم يجعل الأر

    ض له إن أقام أو سار وزنا

    If they stayed or traveled heavily burdened

    Lived but no eye pitied him, and perished

  31. عاش لم ترمه بعين وأودى

    همَلا لم تهب لناعيه أذنا

    Neglected, no eulogy lent him an ear

    God organized His kingdom with intellectual servants

  32. نظّم الله ملكه بعباد

    عبقريين أورثوا الملك حسنا

    Who inherited the kingdom beauty

    They preoccupied the envious ones with glories

  33. شغلتهم عن الحسود المعالي

    إنما يُحسد العظيم ويُشنا

    Indeed, only the great are envied and bashed

    The bright minded bequeaths knowledge

  34. من ذكىّ الفؤاد يوِرث علما

    أو بديع الخيال يَخلق فنا

    Or the innovator of imagination creates art

    How old like a star fragment authentic

  35. كم قديم كرقعة النجم حر

    لم يقلل له الجديدان شأنا

    The new ones did not decrease its value

    And steel it differs over the ages

  36. وحديد عليه يختلف الدهـ

    ـر ويفنى الزمان قرنا فقرنا

    And time perishes a generation after a generation

    So retain both treasuries together

  37. فاحتفظ بالذخيرتين جميعا

    عادة الفطن بالذخائر يعنى

    The habit of the prudent, to care for treasures

    O youth, offer me pure affection

  38. يا شبابا سقونيَ الودّ محضا

    وسقوا شانئي على الغل أجنا

    And offer my detractor more rancor

    Whenever my hair turns grey, recite it

  39. كلما صار للكهولة شعري

    أنشدوه فعاد أمرد لدنا

    So it returns vigorous and flexible

    The poet’s family, the reciters, and their quality

  40. أسرة الشاعر الرواة وما عنَّـ

    ـوه والمرء بالقريب معنى

    And man is concerned with kin

    They are stingy in life with what was said

  41. هم يضنون في الحياة بما قا

    ل ويُلفَون في الحياة أضنا

    And flexible in life, most patient

    And if he passes and they prepare him

  42. وإذا ما انقضى وأهلوه لم يعـ

    ـدم شقيقا من الرواة أو أبنا

    No brother or son of reciters misses him

    Genius, genius, until you raise the banner of knowledge

  43. النبوغَ النبوغَ حتى تنصوا

    راية العلم كالهلال وأسنى

    Like the crescent, and sturdiest

    We are in the image of kingdoms, as long as

  44. نحن في صورة الممالك ما لم

    يصبح العلم والمعلم منا

    Knowledge and teacher were not our pillars

    Do not call the citadels and ships, and call on

  45. لا تنادوا الحصون والسفن وادعوا الـ

    ـعلم ينشئ لكم حصونا وسفنا

    Knowledge to build citadels and ships for you

    If the ship of civilization tore through the land

  46. إن ركب الحضارة اخترق الأر

    ض وشق السماء ريحا ومزنا

    And cleaved the sky, wind, and downpour

    And we followed it like dust, neither firm

  47. وصحبناه كالغبار فلا رحـ

    ـلا شددنا ولا ركابا زممنا

    On the saddle, nor tightly pulling the reins

    Our ancestors tamed time

  48. دان آباؤنا الزمان مليا

    ومليا لحادث الدهر دنا

    And tamed the daily changing of fate

    How we boast about the grave of a dead man and how much

  49. كم نباهي بلحد ميت وكم نحـ

    ـمل من هادم ولم يبن مَنَّا

    We carry ruin but did not build ourselves

    It would be shameful to say we, and not

  50. قد أنَى أن نقول نحن ولا نسـ

    ـمع أبناءنا يقولون كنا

    Hear our children say, it was us
