What Qays tasted of Laila's love.

ازيدكم ما استطعت حبا

ما زادني العاذلون عذلا

More than the enamoured increased their craze.

يا اكحل العين اى ذنب

صير حظي لديك كحلا

O kohl of the eye, what sin have I,

Make my fortune black kohl to you.

يا لين الأذن هل الانوا

وشاية في الهوى ونقلا

O soft of ear, do the reproachers

Gossip of love and convey words?

يا نافر العِطف لا لداع

من ذا أراك النِفار سهلا

O you who turn away your kindness, no no,

Who made you turn away so easily?

صبك ما يستفيق عشقا

وأنت ما تستفيق دلا

You poured what does not awaken passion,

While you do not awaken to insight.

هلا حكيت الغصون لينا

كما حكتك الغصون شكلا

Why did you not tell the branches about me,

As the branches told you of my form?

جعلت في راحتيك وحى

وذاك شئ في الحب قلا

You made your comfort a revelation,

And that is scarce in love.

وتبتغون السلو منى

يا مالك الروح كيف تُسلى

Yet you seek solace from me,

How can the soul's master be consoled?

تماد في الهجر أو تمهل

لعل بعد الصدود وصلا

Persist in estrangement or wait,

Perhaps after aloofness comes union.

تكاد بشرى رضاك عندى

تعدل بشرى القدوم فعلا

The tidings of your pleasure to me,

Are almost equal to your arrival in reality.
