باب يعدّ من الأدب

Praising the Nobles of Books

A chapter considered of literature

فيه استزادة محسن

وقضاء حق قد وجب

In it, increase of excellence

And fulfilling a due right

وتبرع بالفضل من

متأدّب يرعى السبب

And volunteering merit from

A well-mannered one who heeds the cause

أدب الأولى سلفوا فليـ

ـس بمن تحدّاهم عجب

The manners of the predecessors went ahead, so there is no wonder

In one who challenges them

ليس المقرظ ناقدا

إن لم يجد عيبا طلب

The praiser is no critic

If he does not seek out a fault

عين المفرّظ لا تمـ

ـر على المآخذ والريب

The praiser's eye does not pass

Over shortcomings and doubt

يغشى المناجم لا يرى

في جنحها غير الذهب

It covers the mines, not seeing

In its wings anything but gold

ديوان توفيق أحـ

ـب من الطِلا تحت الحبب

A collection of Tawfiq I love

More than ripe dates under shells

والذ من مترنم

في فرعه ينشى الطرب

And which from a singer

In its branch stirs pleasure

بين النسيم وبين أبـ

ـيات النسيب به نسب

Between the breeze and verses

Of the composer - kinship is attributed to it

وإذا أشار بمدحة

شاد المكارم والحسب

And if he gestures with praise

He exalts virtues and merit

وإذا رمى خِطط الحما

سة قلت قسورة وثب

And if he aims at the contours of censure

I say: vigor and vitality

فاقرأه وانتظر المزيـ

ـد من الطرائف والنخب

So read it and wait for more

Of wit and choice morsels

لا تعجلن على الربى

حتى توشيها السحب

Do not rush upon the meadow

Until the clouds saturate it
