1. أَرى الناسَ في مِصرَ شَتّى القُلوبِ

    وَإِن جَمَعَتهُم عَوادي النُوَبْ

    I see the people in Egypt with hearts so divided

    Though calamities may unite them as one

  2. فَكُلُّ لَهُ وِجهَةٌ تُستَرادُ

    وَكُلٌّ لَهُ شَأنُهُ وَالأَرَبْ

    Each has their own path and purpose

    And their own affairs to be done

  3. وَبَعضٌ يَمُدُّ حِبالَ الرَجاءِ

    وَبَعضٌ يَرى اليَأسَ حَقّاً وَجَبْ

    Some extend ropes of hope

    While others see despair as fate

  4. وَهَذا يَنامُ عَلى فِضَّةٍ

    وَهَذا يَبيتُ ضَجيعَ الذَهَبْ

    One sleeps on silver

    Another rests on gold's weight

  5. وَهَذا يَطوفُ بِأَوراقِهِ

    مُعَنّى الأَماني حَثيثَ الطَلَبْ

    One wanders with his papers

    Seeking dreams however slight

  6. يُريدُ الضِياعَ بِأَقصى البِقاعِ

    وَلَو خالَطَ الشَوكُ فيها الحَطَبْ

    Willing to lose himself in far lands

    Even if thorns fill his way

  7. وَباتَ الفَقيرُ يُريدُ الرَغيفَ

    فَيُمعِنُ مِن خيفَةٍ في الهَرَبْ

    The poor desire a loaf of bread

    Fleeing in fear through the night

  8. إِذا سَأَلَ القوتَ قالوا أَساءَ

    وَإن وَصَفَ الفَقرَ قالوا كَذِبْ

    Asking for food they say he sins

    Describe his poverty, they say he lies

  9. وَإِن قالَ يا رَبِّ أَينَ القُلوبَ

    أَجابَ الوَعيدُ وَهاجَ الغَضَبْ

    Say "Oh Lord, where are the hearts?"

    Threats answer and fury arises

  10. وَقالوا فَقيرٌ يَصُكُّ الوُجوهَ

    بِفُحشِ المَقالِ وَسوءِ الأَدَبْ

    They say "a poor man insulting faces

    With rude words and manner unwise"

  11. أُمورٌ تَشِقُّ عَلى العارِفينَ

    وَتَترُكُ جُمهورَهُم في تَعَبْ

    Things hard for the wise to bear

    Leaving the masses to toil and sigh

  12. لَقَد أعوَزَ الحَبُّ كُلَّ النُفوسِ

    وَلَم يَدرِ حُكّامُنا ما السَبَبْ

    Love has made all souls to want

    Yet our rulers know not why

  13. يَطوفُ الرِجالُ مَعاً وَالنِسا

    ءُ آناً فُرادى وَآناً عُصَبْ

    Men and women roam together

    Now in groups and now apart

  14. فَيَرمي التِجارُ بَراميلَهُم

    بِأَبصارِ جِنٍّ تَمُجُّ اللَهَبْ

    Traders eye their merchandise

    With fiery glances that dart

  15. وَيُقسِمُ دَهقانُهُم أَنَّهُ

    أَبادَ المَطِيَّ وَأَفنى الكُتُبْ

    Farmers swear they've destroyed

    Horses and books and instrumental art

  16. فَلَم يَرَ سُنبُلَةً تُقتَنى

    وَلا حَبَّةً في القُرى تُجتَلَبْ

    No wheat he has seen harvested

    No grain gathered from any part

  17. تَواصى أَكابِرُهُم وَالصِغارُ

    بِدَهياءَ تَأخُذُكُم مِن كَثَبْ

    Elders and children advise each other

    With cleverness that captures the heart

  18. فَشُدّوا البُطونَ وَغُضّوا العُيونَ

    وَروضوا الشُؤونَ وَكُفّوا الشَغَبْ

    Tighter now bind your stomachs

    Dim your eyes, tame your ire and your pride

  19. وَلوذوا بِرُكنٍ شَديدِ القُوى

    مِنَ الصَبرِ عِندَ اِشتِدادِ الكُرَبْ

    Take as shelter an aspect of patience

    When troubles and suffering abide

  20. فَما اِستَفحَلَ الشَرُّ إِلّا اِرعَوى

    وَلا اِضطَرَب الأَمرُ إِلّا اِستَتَبْ

    Evil only grows worse if unchecked

    Chaos only settles when rectified
