1. O people, God commands you

not to be supporters of the people of oppression.

  2. O my people, if you do not obey God, He will rain upon you

a scourge, and envelop you in shame and ruin.

  3. O my people, do not support one whom He does not support,

nor be brothers to one who opposes Him.

  4. The enemy receives obedience and servile submission from you

when they act as tyrants—while God receives disobedience.

  5. I fear for you a momentous calamity

that you will have no power to repel when it arrives.

  6. I see for you, in Time’s post, a message

within which the blood already shed surges as its heading.

  7. What excuse have a people who persist in their blindness,

when their Lord has spared no counsel or clear explanation for them?

  8. They enjoin upon themselves nothing but oppression,

while God enjoins justice and goodness upon them.

  9. Do you turn away from the signs, radiant,

that dispel blindness and illumine the heart with faith?

  10. You have turned from the light that effaces every darkness,

and your guide wanders the earth bewildered.

  11. When you went off like grazing cattle with no shepherds,

the earth’s broad passes poured wolves upon you.

  12. Hands coveting the land fought over you,

until the united whole became scattered flocks and herds.

  13. Do you possess anywhere in this world a homeland of your own,

or know within it any dignity or sovereignty?

  14. Today Islam’s poet weeps for Islam

and fills the age with wailing and resonant lament.

  15. The Book cried out, and the Sacred House cried out in grief,

while God’s Messenger spent the night among you in anger.

  16. O nation of the Nile, rise today and surge forth!

Do you not see that Islam’s sanctuary has been brought low?

  17. Restore life, and drink deep at its watering places;

I see the Nile, rich in rivers, thirsty.

  18. Take your share of might and honor,

and bid farewell to all that was a life of humiliation.

  19. God is greatest! The people have already marched forward;

then follow in their wake, old and young alike.

  20. Each strives after the right, seeking it

from a usurper who dealt him abasement and humiliation.

  21. A new age, and a world in which we shall not be wronged,

nor taste what we tasted in the world we knew.
