Bring the monuments to light, and search the chronicles thoroughly;
revive the radiant generations and the ages.
Indeed, our forefathers have a claim upon us, and we have
the noblest sons, who follow in their tracks.
Teach us how to keep their memory alive,
and, for their sake, revive the most faithful covenant.
Blessed be the covenant, though the years grow long
and calamities and vicissitudes beset it.
The age of free Egypt, when they were her people,
when crowns and thrones were among them.
What kingdom was there whose pillars were not shaken
by the reign of Khufu and illustrious Ramses?
It flooded the earth with brimming knowledge
and struck the world with blazing might.
Those are the monuments of the Pharaohs who
conquered Time and set their sights on Fate.
In their pride, they scorned becoming
like the children of this world: ashes in graves.
And so today they are fresh, verdant life,
formed of far-reaching admonitions and lessons.
It counsels Time and guides its people,
and shows the jinn the feats of humankind.
A marvel of the generations arose after them,
for whoever departs or remains to behold.
Time shudders at its majesty,
while it stands firm—its glory does not shudder.
Indeed, in Nairuz, among its stories,
is a ringing note that fills the mindful soul.
They made it their feast in ages past;
so make it Egypt’s long-awaited feast.
Her free festival—its day is kept alive
by every high-souled, free child of hers.
And let it be the first auspicious day
in her life of glory and high distinction.
We in Egypt are all brothers,
sharing within her both benefit and harm.
Our creed is love and abundant goodwill;
none of us turns away from it or denies it.
Rejoice, O feast, and remember what you see;
and tell the generations the noble deeds in the chronicles.
