1. Your guidance, O God! For I see those who

Are leaders and guides taking divergent paths.

  2. I hold my soul too dear to let it follow behind them,

And fear for it the onslaughts of deadly perils.

  3. Your guidance, O God! For we are plunging through

The lightless depths of an age, dark and full of marvels.

  4. They turn the wayward man, through his own desires, away from guidance,

And snare the cords of the steadfast, God-fearing man.

  5. Manifold calamities have appalled the children of this world,

Penetrating deep into its regions and kingdoms.

  6. What child of earth is not made to yearn

By death held out—whether lingering or swiftly drawing near?

  7. I see every illustrious, eminent man of high station

At risk from upheavals that set kingdoms trembling.

  8. I seek refuge in the Lord of humankind from every oppressor,

And complain to Him of every obstinately contentious foe.

  9. I seek refuge in Him from every evil, and shelter myself

In His names from every aggressor and murderous assailant.
