1. أَمِنكَ الذّكرُ يعصِفُ بالقُلوبِ

    ويقذفُ بالمضاجعِ والجُنوبِ

    Does the mention of you stir up hearts,

    And disturb beds and pillows?

  2. لأَنْتَ على رُكودِك مُستطيرٌ

    من الأرواحِ مُطّرِدُ الهُبوبِ

    For in your stillness you ride the winds,

    Expelling all gentle breezes.

  3. تَظلُّ قُواهُ إن وَنَتِ اللّيالي

    حِثاثَ الكَرِّ مُمعِنَةَ الدُّؤوبِ

    Your strength endures though nights may fade,

    Stirring the pot of mischief tirelessly.

  4. قَضَيْتَ الدَّهرَ مالكَ من قَرارٍ

    ولا بكَ في اعتزامِكَ من لُغوبِ

    You spent your life owning no peace,

    With no sign of turning from your ways.

  5. جعلتَ نصيبَ نفسِكَ أن تراها

    وما للموتِ فيها من نَصيبِ

    You made your soul’s lot to always roam,

    While death has no portion in it.

  6. لَنِعمَ فَتى الكِنانةِ غيرَ واهٍ

    إذا جَدَّ البلاءُ ولا هَيوبِ

    Blessed is the resolute man who stands firm

    When trials come and does not waver.

  7. وما بَعْضُ الحُماةِ وإن تَغالىَ

    بِثَبْتٍ في الخطوب ولا صَليبِ

    Not all defenders, though lofty their zeal,

    Remain steadfast amidst war and tribulation.

  8. إذا ضاقَ الخِناقُ به تنحَّى

    يَلوذُ بكلِّ مُرتكَضٍ رَحيبِ

    When troubles narrow in, they recoil,

    Seeking any spacious refuge.

  9. يَميلُ مع الشَّمالِ فإن تناهت

    بها الغاياتُ مال مع الجنوبِ

    They lean with the winds and if ends

    Lead them astray, they bend south.

  10. بمن يَثِقُ السَّوادُ إذا تبارى

    سماسرةُ المُقَنَّعةِ الخَلوبِ

    In whom can the commoners trust when

    Disguised brokers of harm assemble?

  11. ومَن يحمِي البلادَ إذا رَمَتْها

    بناتُ الدّهرِ باليوم العصيبِ

    Who will protect the lands when

    The days of fate assail them harshly?

  12. طبيبَ النّيلِ هل للنِّيلِ شافٍ

    وهل للدّاءِ بعدَك من طبيبِ

    Will the healer of the Nile find a cure?

    Will any physician succeed you?

  13. أَلم ترَ كيف أخطأ كلُّ آسٍ

    ومن لك بالنِطاسيِّ المُصيبِ

    Have you not seen how every predictor missed,

    Except the able diviner?

  14. هَوَى الوطنُ الجريحُ وكنتَ قِدماً

    تضُمُّ جوانبَ الجُرحِ الرَّغيبِ

    The wounded nation collapsed and you were

    A leg bracing the agreeable wound.

  15. على الدُّنيا العَفاءُ إذا تولىَّ

    أطِبّاءُ الممالكِ والشُّعوبِ

    When the ignorant rule, glory abandons

    The doctors of realms and peoples.

  16. أتى زمنُ النُّعاةِ فما لِمصرٍ

    سوى طُولِ التفجُّعِ والنّحيبِ

    The days of incapable successors came,

    Leaving Egypt only lamenting and weeping.

  17. أتنظرُ نكبةَ الوطنِ المُذكَّى

    وتسمعُ صيحةَ الشّعب الحريبِ

    Do you watch the oft-warned calamity of the nation,

    And hear the woeful cry of the populace?

  18. إذا ما مصرُ زُلزِلَ جانباها

    فَمِن خَفَقانِ قلبِكَ والوجيبِ

    If Egypt's pillars shake, it is but

    The throbbing of your heart and fervor.

  19. وإن جَرَتِ الرِّياحُ بها لهيباً

    فتلكَ حَرارةُ الوجدِ المُذيبِ

    And if winds blow fire through it,

    That is the heat of melting passion.

  20. كفاكَ أما تزالُ أخا همومٍ

    كعهدِكَ قبلَ عاديةِ المغيبِ

    Enough! Are you not still a brother of worries

    As was your custom before departure?

  21. حَملتَ جَوى المشوقِ وأنتَ ثاوٍ

    بوادي الموتِ للوادي الخصيبِ

    You carried the agony of longing while lying

    In death's valley, towards the fertile valley.

  22. مَضَى الشُّهداءُ ليس لهم نقيبٌ

    فكنتَ لهم بمنزلةِ النّقيبِ

    The martyrs passed with no successor,

    So you were their successor.

  23. تباركَ وجهُ مَن أعطاك وجهاً

    يُضيءُ جوانبَ الجَدَثِ المَهِيبِ

    Blessed is the face of the One who gave you a face

    That illuminates the sides of the momentous tomb!

  24. تَرِفُّ الحورُ والوِلدانُ شَوْقاً

    إلى ما فيه من تَرَفٍ وطيبِ

    The nymphs and youths long

    For the bliss and fragrance in it.

  25. تنزَّهَ في الحياةِ عنِ الدَّنايا

    وصينَ عن القوادحِ والعُيوبِ

    You eschewed baseness in life

    And guarded against sin and shame.

  26. يُريك جَلالُه الحرمَ المُحلَّى

    وعِتْقَ المُصحفِ الأَنِقِ العجيبِ

    His majesty shows you the perfumed sanctuary

    And the wondrous, elegant Holy Book.

  27. خطيبَ الأُمّتَيْنِ أعنْ مَلالٍ

    تركتَ الأُمّتين بلا خطيبِ

    Orator of the two nations, relieve my weariness -

    You left the two nations without an orator!

  28. أَهِبْ بالغافلين وقُلْ بلادي

    دَعوتُكِ باسمِ ربّكِ فاسْتَجيبي

    Rouse the heedless and say: My country,

    I called you by your Lord's name, so answer!

  29. بلادي كيف أنتِ على العوادي

    وماذا ذُقتِ من عَنَتِ الخطوبِ

    My country, how do you fare on the meadows,

    And what have you tasted of misfortune?

  30. بلادي هل صَدَقْتِ الجِدَّ بعدي

    أمِ استغنيتِ بالأملِ الكَذوبِ

    My country, did you honor your pledge after me,

    Or grow content with false hopes?

  31. بلادي هل دَرجْتِ على سبيلي

    ومِلْتِ عن المساربِ والدُّروبِ

    My country, did you follow my path

    And refuse crooked roads?

  32. أرى شِيَعاً وأحزاباً غِضاباً

    لغيرِ اللهِ والوطنِ الغَضُوبِ

    I see angry factions and parties

    Who rebel against God and the wrathful nation.

  33. أرى سَلَباً يَطيحُ على أكُفٍّ

    تُراشُ سِهامُها بيد السّليبِ

    I see spoils falling into grasping hands

    Whose arrows are whetted by the despoiler.

  34. أرى شعباً يُقادُ إلى المنايا

    فيذهب مُمعِناً خَبَب الجنيبِ

    I see a populace led to demise,

    Going willingly into fettered servitude.

  35. بَرِئتُ من الكنانةِ إن أقامت

    على تلك المآثمِ والذُّنوبِ

    I disown the Egyptians if they persist

    Upon such sins and crimes.

  36. إمامَ المُهتدينَ أفِضْ علينا

    من النُّور المُحجَّبِ في الغيوبِ

    Imam of the guided, shine down upon us

    From the light veiled in the unseen!

  37. أَلستَ ترى السّوادَ طغَى عليه

    ظلامُ الموقفِ الخَطِرِ الرّهيبِ

    Do you not see that darkness prevails

    In this perilous and dreadful situation?

  38. تركتَ الأمرَ مُجتمِعاً فأمسى

    كثيرَ السُّبلِ مُختلفَ الضرُّوبِ

    You left the matter confused so it came

    To have numerous paths and different creeds.

  39. وكان الحقُّ للأقوامِ ديناً

    فبدّل كلُّ أوّاهٍ مُنيبِ

    Truth became a religion for some peoples

    So each misguided heretic altered it.

  40. أَلا أَرِنَا مناسِكَنا فإنّا

    من الأَحبارِ في أمرٍ مُريبِ

    We are unclear, so show us our rites -

    We scholars are anxious and in doubt!

  41. همُ اتّخذوا الشّرائعَ مُسرجَاتٍ

    مُذلَّلةَ الغواربِ للرّكوبِ

    They took the laws as saddled mounts

    With long necks, for riding.

  42. تحامَى العُدوةَ القصوى وتهوِي

    براكبها إلى الأمدِ القريبِ

    The distant enemy attacks fiercely

    Throwing its rider into near ruin.

  43. رُعاةُ الشَّعبِ طاعَ لهم فأمسى

    بوادٍ من سياستهم جديبِ

    The people's shepherds were obeyed so they left

    The people in a barren valley.

  44. يُمارسُ فيه شِرَّةَ كلِّ ضارٍ

    سريعِ الشَّدِّ مُستعِرِ الوُثوبِ

    They practice there all manner of evil,

    Swiftly binding and lighting the flames of discord.

  45. يَصولُ بحدِّ أعصلَ ذي صَريفٍ

    وصَلْتٍ من دم القتلى خضيبِ

    Savagery runs wild with a cutting blade

    Wet with the blood of the slain.

  46. ولم أرَ كالشُّعوب تُساسُ فوضَى

    وتُؤخذُ بالمخالبِ والنُّيوبِ

    Never did I see people ruled by such chaos

    And seized by claws and fangs.

  47. رمى الأبصارَ ساحرُها فزاغت

    وران هوى النّفوسِ على القلوبِ

    Their sorcerer has blinded sights

    And passions have strayed into hearts.

  48. فما عُرِفَ النّصيحُ من المُداجِي

    ولا وضح الصّريحُ من المشوبِ

    Neither good advice nor honest speech

    Can now be distinguished from fraud.

  49. أَيُخذَلُ في الكنانةِ كلُّ حُرٍّ

    ويُنصرُ كلُّ صَخَّابٍ شَغوبِ

    Is this the Age of Ignorance I see

    Or government by the unwise?

  50. ويُمنَعُ ذو القضاءِ الحقِّ منا

    ويَقضي كلُّ أزورَ ذي نكوبِ

    The creed of the Age of Ignorance

    Was closer to Islam than it is.

  51. ويُرمَى ذو البراءةِ من ذوينا

    بملءِ الأرضِ من إثمٍ وحُوبِ

    May God rest you from every distress

    That hovers with wings spread.

  52. يُعابُ المرءُ يَصدقُ مَن يُوالي

    ويصبرُ للشّدائدِ والكروبِ

    Can the sorrowful rejoice unless

    The hand of fate casts them down?

  53. ويُحمَد كلُّ مُختلفِ المساعي

    إلى الأقوامِ جيّاءٍ ذَهوبِ

    Alas for the fine hopes

    That I stirred under pleasant bowers!

  54. يُريك ضُحىً لِباسَ فتىً أمينٍ

    فإن لَبِسَ الظَّلامَ فذو دَبيبِ

    We planted them lush and blooming

    Yet barren Death spoiled them all.

  55. يَكادُ من التلصُّصِ والتَّخَفِّي

    يشقُّ السُّبْلَ في عين الرقيبِ

    They withered and were to me and all freemen

    The last of life's fresh joys.

  56. لَتِلْكَ الجاهليّةُ أو أراها

    حُكومةَ غير ذي النَّصَفِ اللّبيب

    I watch for the hoped-for good fortune

    Yet dread what befell the tribe of ‘Utbah.

  57. لَدينُ الجاهليّةِ كان أدنى

    إلى الإسلام منها والصّليبِ

    My country, I gave you my youth

    And manhood did not curb my zeal.

  58. سَنِيحَكَ ربَّنا أبِكُلِّ جَوٍّ

    مُحلَّقُ بارحٍ عَجِلِ النّعيبِ

    For you I live free for as long as I draw breath

    And in you I die a noble death.

  59. أما يتهلّلُ المحزونُ إلا

    رمته يدُ الحوادثِ بالشُّحوبِ

    I wrong you if I accept the disloyalty of a despot

    Other than you or tolerate the harm of a loved one.

  60. فوا أسفِي لآمالٍ حِسانٍ

    هززتُ لهنّ أعطافَ الطَّروبِ

    A fighter's honor is to withhold

    Punishment and reward.

  61. غرسناهنَّ خُضراً يانعاتٍ

    فأخلفهنَّ كلُّ حياً سَكوبِ

    What value is there in the writer, however lofty,

    Who is arrogant and lacks integrity?

  62. ذَويْن فكنَّ لي ولكلِّ حُرٍّ

    أواخرَ نَضرةِ العيشِ الرّطيبِ

    I am done with verse the day I sell

    Its generosity for a mean price!

  63. أراقبُ دولةَ الخَلَفِ المُرجَّى

    وأخشى ما أصابَ بني عتيبِ

    Woe to the picky critics

    Like fiery arrows.

  64. فيا وطناً وهبتُ له شبابي

    وما رَعَتِ المُروءةُ من مَشيبي

    I cast them at the sleepers but they returned

    Frightening me, quivering with complaint.

  65. لأَجلِكَ ما حَيِيتُ أعيش حُرّاً

    وفيكَ أموتُ مَوْتَ فتىً نجيبِ

    They pass by the people, frustrating them,

    With the sighs of the anguished.

  66. ظلمتُك إن رَضيتُ عُقوقَ خِلٍّ

    سواكَ أوِ احتملتُ أذى حبيبِ

    I roused the two valleys but they did not wake -

    Such is the setback of the compelling warning!

  67. ومِن شَرَفِ المُجاهدِ أن تراه

    يَجِلُّ عنِ المُعاقبِ والمُثيبِ

  68. وما حَسَبُ الأديبِ وإن تناهَى

    بِمُسْتَغنٍ عنِ الأدبِ الحسيبِ

  69. بَرِئتُ من القَرَيضِ غَداةَ أمضي

    أبيعُ كريمَهُ بَيْعَ الجليبِ

  70. فويحي للقواصفِ من قوافٍ

    كأمثالِ القواذفِ باللهيبِ

  71. رَمَيتُ بها النّيامَ فراجعتني

    مُروَّعةَ الزمازمِ تتقي بي

  72. تمرُّ بهم مُخيّبةً وتأتي

    لها زَفَراتُ مُرتَمِضٍ كئيبِ

  73. نفضتُ الواديَينْ فما استفاقوا

    وتلك نكيثةُ الدَّاعي المُهيبِ
