1. قُلْ ما أردتَ فما عليك جُناحُ

    أَسُدىً كذلك تذهبُ الأرواحُ

    Say what you want, for you have no blame

    Thus the souls depart like wild game

  2. يا للضحايا الحاملاتِ جِراحَها

    يُغدَى بها مَحمولةً ويُراحُ

    O victims bearing their wounds

    Borne as burdens then laid down in peace

  3. فَتَك السّلاحُ بها حَوَاسِرَ ما لها

    غيرُ النُّفوس الوالهاتِ سلاحُ

    Weapons tore them with no remorse

    Save for souls enraptured with arms

  4. هتفتْ تُحيِّي مِصرَ في أتراحها

    فَتُخرِّمَتْ وتوالت الأتراحُ

    They cried out to revive Egypt in its grief

    Only to be torn up as grief amasses

  5. أودى رَصاصُ القاذفين بفتيةٍ

    هُمْ بالنُّفوسِ لَدَى الفداءِ سماحُ

    The shooters’ bullets claimed the lives of youths

    Magnanimous souls at the call of sacrifice

  6. غَضِبوا لمِصرَ تُصابُ في آمالها

    ولِحقِّها الغالي المَصُونِ يُباحُ

    They raged that Egypt was struck in her hopes

    And her precious guarded right was profaned

  7. عَصفتْ بهم أيدي الرَّدى فكأنّما

    عصفتْ بريحانِ الرّياضِ رِياحُ

    The hands of havoc blew them away as if

    They were meadows’ basil blown by gales

  8. يتساقطون مُهذَّبا فُمهذَّباً

    غضَّ الشّبابِ جَبينُهُ وَضّاحُ

    Falling one by one, refined and genteel

    Smooth of face, beaming and bright

  9. النُّور في دَمِه المُطهَّرِ مُشرِقٌ

    والطِّيبُ مُنتشرُ الشَّذَى فوَّاحُ

    The light in their purified blood radiates

    And their scent wafts intensely fragrant

  10. يا للشبابِ جرَى على آمالهِ

    قَدَرٌ من الموتِ الزُّؤام مُتاحُ

    Alas for the youth whose fate was

    A portion of sudden death ready at hand

  11. ذُخْرُ البلادِ أضاعه أبناؤُها

    فمضى يُشِّيعهُ أسىً ونُواحُ

    The nation’s treasure was lost by its sons

    Mourned by anguish and cries of lament

  12. خطبٌ تَبيتُ له المدائنُ والقُرى

    شتّى الجراحِ وما درَى الجرّاحُ

    Eulogies for them keep towns and villages sleepless

    Riven with wounds beyond what surgeons can suture

  13. لا الليلُ ليلٌ مِن تَطَاوُلِ همِّها

    للغائبين ولا الصَّباحُ صباحُ

    Neither is the night a true night in its prolonged anxiety

    For the departed, nor is the dawn a real dawn

  14. تبكي على الفتيانِ في آنافِهم

    شَمَمٌ وفيهم نَخوةٌ وطِماحُ

    They weep for the lads in their prime

    With statues and nobleness and ambition

  15. بِيضُ الصّحائفِ والمواقفِ ما بهم

    خَوَرٌ ولاَ هُمْ بالنّفوسِ شِحاحُ

    Their unblemished past and exemplary stances

    Show no shame or stinginess of soul

  16. شهداءُ حربٍ ليس من أبطالها

    مَنْ سِلْمُه حَربٌ لنا وكِفاحُ

    They are war martyrs, though not of its heroes

    For us the war, struggle, and fight

  17. يُوحي فتنطلق السِّهامُ وما رمى

    أيدي الرُّماةِ سِهامُه والرّاحُ

    He inspires so arrows are loosed but not

    By archers’ hands, their shafts, or the wind

  18. مَلَكَ السّواعدَ والمناكبَ فهي في

    يدِه سُيوفٌ للأذَى ورِماحُ

    He wields sturdy arms and shoulders so they are

    Swords in his hand, spearheads for harm

  19. تلك الحلومُ النّازعاتُ إلى الهوى

    ما للقضيَّةِ أو تثوبَ نجاحُ

    Those pliant bodies inclining to passion

    Not for the cause of victory or gain

  20. يا قومُ جِدُّوا لا حياةَ لمن يرى

    أنَّ الحياةَ مَجانةٌ ومِزاحُ

    O people, be serious! No life for one who sees

    Life as a free gift and jest

  21. أنظلّ شتَّى والبلادُ أخيذةٌ

    يُودَى بها من حولنا ويُطاحُ

    Shall I remain shaded while the nations are

    Subjugated around us and made to kneel?

  22. أفما لكم إن قام شعبٌ ناهضٌ

    إلا خلافٌ قائمٌ وصياحُ

    Shall I stay mute while calamities cry out

    Dark evils with unremitting clamor?

  23. فيم الخلافُ وقد تبيَّن أمرُكم

    أَفتُنكرون الحقَّ وهو صُراحُ

    Are we vile sheep to be preyed on

    And annihilated by the butcher?

  24. مصرُ الحياةُ فما لمن لا يتّقي

    فيها الأُبوَّةَ والبنينَ فلاحُ

    Souls find no bliss in their loftiness

    Save when specters haunt them

  25. داءُ الشعوب الفردُ ليس يُضيرُه

    شعبٌ يُضامُ وأُمةٌ تُجتاحُ

    Politics respects no flaws in its realm

    Dark faces or ugly sins

  26. ما عذرُ من يأبى الحياةَ لقومه

    ويقول مُوتوا والنفوسُ صِحاحُ

    A reputation it rends despite archers behind it

    And shameless visage misleading the guided

  27. الموتُ للمرضى الضّعافِ وهذه

    مِصرُ الأبيّةُ قوّةٌ ومِراحُ

    It engenders injustice then pretends

    To bring justice to all worlds, a pollinator

  28. نهضت تَسُدُّ على المُغيرِ مجالَه

    وتُريه سَدَّ الموتِ كيف يُزاحُ

    The rule of Shariah is tangled in its schemes

    Though the noble sura and holy verse

  29. لم يَثْنِها والظلمُ يَهدِرُ حولها

    كالرّعدِ صَوْبٌ للردى سَحّاحُ

    Its prayer beads and tablets were shamed

    Nearly splitting from the length of their torment

  30. تمشي كما مَشَتِ العروسُ يَزينها

    مِن ساطعِ الدَّم مِطرَفٌ ووشاحُ

    Increase, angels of civilization—yours

    Is a task for you and your luminous age

  31. أغلى اللآلئِ قيمةً ما ضمَّ من

    تلك القذائفِ تاجُها اللمَّاحُ

    You are lanterns of nations while this

    World of darkness was lit up by the lamp

  32. نَشْوى ولا غيرَ النُّفوسِ مُراقةً

    من حولها خمرٌ ولا أقداحُ

    The Orient saw its path in life

    And walked it, an excellent diligent worker

  33. أَهِيَ المآتمُ في البلادِ مُقامةٌ

    لِشبابِ مصرٍ أم هي الأفراحُ

    God is greater than those who deny His promise

    And think confinement cannot be breached

  34. ضَرَمُ الحميّةِ يُطفئ الضَرَمَ الذي

    يَجدُ الحزينُ ويشتكي المُلتاحُ

    The door of life is guidance from His light

    And for one who takes refuge at His door, the key

  35. أَتُهانُ مصرُ ونحن حول لوائها

    الموتُ أكرمُ والقبورُ فِساحُ

    Lord, guide us and unite our leaders’ strength

    That we may be spared harm and find rest

  36. مهلاً فلا الحجّاجُ في جَبَروته

    يَهوِي بنا صبباً ولا السّفاحُ

    Shall I remain fallen while misfortunes encircle us

    Dark calamities that grant no relief?

  37. إنّا انطلقنا صاعِدينَ لغايةٍ

    للمجد مُنطلَقٌ بها وسَراحُ

    Your prolonged silence suffices the nations—can it be

    Unlawful to say “my country”?

  38. ماذا يُرادُ بنا وأين حُلومُنا

    فَسَدَ الزمانُ فما يُرام صلاحُ

    Say it, melodious, delicious to the ear

    Passing to give life to the valley’s hope

  39. أَيَظلُّ هُورُ على الكِنانةِ نَاعياً

    فَيُقالُ غَنَّى البُلبلُ الصَّدّاحُ

    Hope slept as you slept, lifelong fellows

    Never created for other than stillness

  40. أَنَروحُ صُمّاً والحوادثُ رُجَّفٌ

    أَنظلُّ بُكماً والخُطوبُ فِصَاحُ

    Egypt whom you gave life to her people

    The living ailing, seldom visited by the hale

  41. لَسْنَا مِن الضّأنِ الذّليلِ فَترتوي

    مِنّا المُدَى ويُبِيدُنا الذّبَّاحُ

    She calls you a deity and watches—is there

    For her a pitying one, savior, or aide?

  42. لا تَنعمُ الأَرواحُ في عَليائِها

    إلا إذا شَقِيَتْ بها الأشباحُ

    She is destined to endure every awful adversity

    And sag under shackles and irons

  43. ما لِلسياسةِ لا المثالبُ عِندَها

    سُودُ الوُجوهِ ولا الذُّنوبُ قِباحُ

    Passions persist in their independence

    Until the rebel takes it by force

  44. عِرْضٌ يَشقُّ على الرُّماةِ وَراءَهُ

    وَجهٌ يُبرِّحُ بالهُداةِ وَقاحُ

    Woe to those who missed the path and hopes

    With no counselor, guide, or leader

  45. تَلِدُ المظالمَ ثُمَّ تَزعُمُ أنّها

    لِلعدلِ بينَ العالَمينَ لَقاحُ

    They dashed the nation’s hopes and disabled

    The faith of jihad when it needed jihad

  46. حُكمُ الشرّيعةِ من حَبائلِ مكرِها

    والسُّورةُ الغَرّاءُ والإِصحاحُ

    They duped the masses who then frolicked around them

    Happily committing harm and corruption

  47. خَجلتْ مَسابِحُها وَتِلكَ مُسوحُها

    كادت لِطولِ عَذابها تَنْصاحُ

    They busied themselves with their weddings while their nation

    Languished in mourning, grief, and bereavement

  48. زيدوا مَلائكةَ الحضارةِ إنّه

    عَملٌ لَكم وَلِعصرِكم فَضّاحُ

    That treaty they proclaimed at the top of their lungs

    In pitiful, heartsick elation and joy

  49. أنتم مَصابيحُ الشُّعوبِ وهذه

    دُنيا الظّلامِ أَنارها المِصباحُ

    Was it not a safe conquest for the people when

    Swords rested secure in their sheaths?

  50. الشرّقُ أَبصرَ في الحياةِ سَبيلَهُ

    ومَضَى فَنِعمَ العاملُ الكدَّاحُ

    A nation toppled by mere words, a nation

    Plummeting defenseless without an executioner

  51. اللهُ أكبرُ من يُكذّبُ وعده

    ويظنُّ أن الضيّقَِ لا ينداحُ

    Under it they became the enemy’s kin

    Closer in friendship and affection than other nations

  52. بابُ الحياةِ هدايةٌ من نُورهِ

    وَلمَنْ يلوذُ بِبابهِ المِفتاحُ

    They protect what we protect and target the same

    Enemies and adversaries we strike

  53. ربِّ أهدنا واجمع قُوى زُعمائِنا

    فلعلَّنا نُكفَى الأذى ونُراحُ

    Were it not for their grit and might

    No scent or trace of us would remain

  54. أَنظلُّ صرعَى والمصائبُ حولنا

    سُودٌ رواكدُ ما لهنّ بَراحُ

    Lies echoed by the misguided, empty claims

    Cried out by the unaware proclaiming them

  55. حَسْبُ البلادِ سكوتُك المُتمادِي

    أترى حراماً أن تقولَ بلادي

    Have you seen one more foolish than an ignorant fool

    Seeking life at the hands of the executioner?

  56. قُلْها مُحَبَّبَةَ الرَّنينِ شهيّةً

    تمضِي فتبعث من رجاء الوادي

    O you who described upright life, what

    Wisdom or guidance can you see in this?

  57. رقد الرّجاءُ كما رقدتَ وكنتما

    إلفين ما خُلِقَا لغيرِ سُهادِ

    After you the people wander confused

    The guide bewildered, the traveler lost

  58. مِصرُ التي كنتَ الحياةَ لشعبها

    مَرْضَى الحياةِ قَليلةُ العُوّادِ

    When you were its guide, it walked the straight path

    Proceeding happily with the best supplies

  59. تدعوكَ والهةً وتنظرُ هل لها

    من راحمٍ أو مُنقذٍ أو فادِ

    The truth is clear in its features, brilliant

    Success radiant in signs far and wide

  60. أمست تَبوءُ بكلِّ خطبٍ مُنكَرٍ

    وتنوءُ بالأغلالِ والأصفادِ

    It forgot redemption—no thought passes

    Through its mind, no passion stirs in its heart

  61. ما زالتِ الأهواءُ باستقلالها

    حتّى استقلَّ بها المُغيرُ العادي

    Though sometimes the hour of remembering it

    Revives a grieving soul and waters a thirsty heart

  62. ويح الأُلى ضلّوا السبيل أمالهم

    من ناصحٍ أو مُرشدٍ أو هادِ

    Have pity—you suffered the heat of exile

    In your love of Egypt though we failed to achieve our wish

  63. هم خيّبوا أملَ البلادِ وعطّلوا

    دينَ الجهادِ ولاتَ حينَ جهادِ

    We are your soldiers, building for our nation

    Glory with our souls and bodies

  64. خدعوا السَّوادَ فراح يَنعقُ حولهم

    فَرِحاً ويُمعِنُ في أذىً وفسادِ

  65. عكفوا على أعراسهم وبلادُهم

    في مأتمٍ من همّها وحِدادِ

  66. تلك المعاهدةُ التي هتفوا بها

    من ساجعٍ طَرِبِ الفُؤادِ وشادِ

  67. أَوَ لم تكن للقومِ فتحاً آمنت

    فيه السّيوفُ بقوّةِ الأَغمادِ

  68. وطنٌ يُطيحُ به الكلامُ وأُمّةٌ

    تهوِي مُمزَّقةً بغير جلادِ

  69. كانوا العدوَّ فأصبحوا في ظلِّها

    أَوْلىَ الشُّعوبِ بأُلفةٍ ووِدادِ

  70. يحمون ما نحمِي ويرمون الأُلى

    نرمِي من الأعداءِ والأضدادِ

  71. لولا بَسالَتُهم وشِدَّةُ بأسِهِم

    لم يبقَ منّا رائحٌ أو غادِ

  72. زُورٌ يُردِّدُهُ الغَويُّ وباطلٌ

    يشدو به من لا يعي ويُنادي

  73. أرأيتَ أخسرَ صفقةً من جاهلٍ

    يرجو الحياةَ على يد الجلّادِ

  74. يا مَن وصفتَ لنا الحياةَ رشيدةً

    ماذا ترى من حكمةٍ ورشادِ

  75. الشّعبُ بعدكَ في يَبابٍ مُوحَشٍ

    حَارَ الدليلُ به وضلَّ الحادي

  76. سلكَ المحجّةَ حين كُنتَ دليلَهُ

    ومضى لحاجتهِ بأطيبِ زادِ

  77. الحقُّ معروفُ المعالم ساطعٌ

    والنُّجْحُ وضّاحُ البشائرِ بادِ

  78. نَسيَ الجلاءَ فما يمرُّ بخاطرٍ

    منه ولا يهفو له بفؤادِ

  79. ولقد يكون وفيه ساعةُ ذِكرهِ

    روحُ الحزينِ ورِيُّ قلبِ الصّادي

  80. وارحمتا لكَ ذُبْتَ من حَرِّ الجَوى

    في حُبِّ مِصرَ ولم نَفُزْ بِمُرادِ

  81. إنّا جُنودُك نبتِني لبلادِنا

    مجداً من الأرواحِ والأجسادِ
