1. ممالِكَ الشّرقِ ما في الحقِّ من باسِ

    أشفى الجريحُ وضلّت حكمة الآسي

    The East's domains, there's no power in truth

    The wounded recovered, wisdom went astray

  2. دَعِي القضاءَ وما تَبغِي زَلازِلُه

    بالشّامخِ الضّخم أو بالشّاهقِ الرّاسي

    Leave fate be, and don't want its quakes

    With the towering giant or the towering minaret

  3. واستقبلي ضَرباتِ الدّهرِ خاشعةً

    ذَهَبْنَ بالقلبِ أم أَوْدَيْنَ بالرّاسِ

    And welcome the strokes of fate humbly

    Did they affect the heart or the head

  4. نداعِسُ الحادثاتِ السُّود ثائرةً

    والموتُ يَصرعُ منّا كلَّ دَعّاسِ

    The dark disasters attack slumbering

    And death strikes down each of us, the tippler

  5. هَوَى الأمينُ على أشلاءِ رفقتِه

    في جوفِ أشدقَ للأبطالِ فَرّاسِ

    The trusted one fell on the remnants of his comrades

    In the midst of heroes, the boldest of knights

  6. طوى الدُّهورَ ووارَى في جوانِحه

    مِلءَ الممالكِ من جنٍّ ومن ناسِ

    He folded the ages, and harbored in his soul

    The countries full, of jinn and of mankind

  7. يرمي الشُّعوبَ إذا استعصَتْ بطاغيةٍ

    جَمِّ الصّواعقِ جبّارِ القُوَى قاسِ

    It casts the nations, if they rebel, with a tyrant

    The thunderbolts of the Almighty, severe in might

  8. باد الأُلى عَمروا الأيّامَ زاهيةً

    فما ترى العينُ منهم غيرَ أرماسِ

    The noble ones lived the days flourishing

    So the eye sees of them only remnants

  9. الدَهرُ نَشوانُ ما ينفكُّ يَقْرَعُنا

    بالحادثِ النُّكرِ قَرْعَ الكاس ِبالكاسِ

    Fate is a revelry, it does not cease to strike us

    With the unknown accident, striking the cup with the cup

  10. كبّرتُ للفارس المِقدامِ مُنْعَفِراً

    بين الضَّجِيعَينِ مِن صِدقٍ ومن باسِ

    I exalted the bold knight, enraged

    Between the two slain, in loyalty and in affliction

  11. أَوْلىَ الرجالِ بِسربالِ الحياةِ فَتىً

    ضَافي السرَّابيلِ مِن نَسْج الوَغَى كاسِي

    The best of men for life's gown, a young man

    Clad in the garb of strife, weaver of peril's attire

  12. لكنَّهُ الموتُ لا يُرْمَى بأسلحةٍ

    ولا تُرَدُّ عَواديهِ بِحُرَّاسِ

    Yet he is death, not warded off with weapons

    Nor repelled are its havocs with guards

  13. رَمَى الأمينَ بِنابٍ غاصَ نَافِذُه

    في أُمَّةٍ رَهْنَ أنيابٍ وأَضْراسِ

    It struck the Trusted One with a fang penetrating

    In a nation hostage to fangs and molars

  14. يُلقِي الشّباكَ عليها كلُّ مُقْتنِصٍ

    وَيُدمِنُ الفَتكَ فيها كلُّ نَهّاسِ

    It casts the nets on it, every hunter

    And inflicts havoc on it, every despicable beast

  15. ما إن تَزالُ رُعاةُ السُّوءِ تجعلُها

    مَرْعَى عَواسِلَ عَجْلىَ الشَّدِّ أطلاسِ

    The evil shepherds still make it

    A pasture for rapacious, quick-striking foxes

  16. مَوقوفةَ السَّعي ما يَمشي الزّمانُ بها

    كأنّ آمالَها شُدَّتْ بِأَمْراسِ

    Halted in effort, as time passes with it

    As if its hopes are tied with poles

  17. تُناشِدُ العهدَ أَقواماً فَراعِنةً

    سَاسوا الشُّعوبَ فكانوا شرَّ سُوّاسِ

    It invokes the covenant with tyrant folks

    Who ruled the nations and were the worst of governors

  18. يَنقضُّ جَلّادُهم في كلِّ مَملكةٍ

    يَرْمِي العبيدَ ويحمي كل نخّاسِ

    Their tormentor annuls in every kingdom

    Casts down the slaves and protects each pimp

  19. بُوركت مِن مُؤمنٍ ما كَانَ أطهرَهُ

    على تَصاريفِ دُنيا ذاتِ أرْجاسِ

    Blessed is the faithful whose purity was greatest

    In the vicissitudes of a world laden with sins

  20. مُسْتَيْقنِ النّفسِ لا يَغْشَى سرِيرتَهُ

    ما في السّرائرِ مِن ظنٍّ وَوَسواس

    Certain in soul, no doubt clouds his conscience

    That harms him in truth's garb, each young man

  21. يَشْقَى بهِ في رِداءِ الحقِّ كُلُّ فتىً

    نَزّاعِ أَرْديِةٍ في القومِ لبّاسِ

    The dissenter's gown among the people his attire

    He whom doubts do not trouble and suspicions do not haunt

  22. جمِّ النّوازعِ لا تُحْصَى مذاهِبُه

    ولا تُحدُّ مَناحيهِ بِمقياسِ

    The integrator of disputes, his doctrines countless

    His directions boundless, by any measure

  23. جِنسٌ من الشّرِّ ما يَنفكُّ واحِدُه

    يَنشقُّ عن صُوَرٍ شتَّى وأجناسِ

    An evil breed that does not cease, each one of it

    Splits into diverse forms and species

  24. الشَّرقُ يَرجفُ والإسلامُ في فَزَعٍ

    عاني الممالِكِ يخشى كُلَّ دَسّاسِ

    The East quakes, Islam terrified

    The countries suffering, fearing each despicable

  25. عَاليِ الضَّجيجِ لِيومٍ من مآتمهِ

    كَيومِ حَمزةَ أو يوم ابْنِ عبّاسِ

    Loud in clamor, a day of its tragedies

    Like Hamza's day, or the day of Ibn Abbas

  26. صَيحاتُ تُونسَ مَا انْفكّتْ تجاوبُها

    أنّاتُ بكين أو رَنّاتُ مِدارسِ

    Tunisia's screams, unceasing their echoes

    The wailings of Beijing and the laments of schools

  27. وَعْندَ مكَّةَ إذ أَوْدَى وَجارَتِها

    ما عند بغدادَ مِن هَمٍّ وَإبْلاسِ

    And next to Mecca, when it and its neighbor perished

    Not like Baghdad's worries and torments

  28. تَمضي الخطوبُ فَتُنْسَى بَعدَ شِدَّتِها

    وما لِخطبِ بني الفاروقِ مِن ناسِ

    The calamities pass, forgotten after their intensity

    And the calamities of the Prophet's family have no equal

  29. راحوا به صَيِّباً مِن حِكمةٍ وَهُدىً

    في صَيِّبٍ من دُموعِ الرُّسْلِ رَجَّاسِ

    They took him as a boy in wisdom and guidance

    In a boy of the messengers' flowing tears, a drawer

  30. نُورٌ مِن الملأ الأعلى مَطالِعُه

    يَنسابُ سَاطِعُه في كلِّ نبراسِ

    A light from the Highest Assembly, its rise

    Radiant flows in each lamp

  31. الفارسُ العدلُ لم يَجهلْ على بَطَلٍ

    ولم يُذِقْهُ الرَّدَى إلا بِقِسْطَاسِ

    The just knight did not wrong a hero

    And did not give him bitterness except by the scales

  32. والكاتبُ الحُرُّ لم يَهْتِكْ حِمَى قَلَمٍ

    بالتُّرَّهاتِ ولم يَعْبَثْ بِقِرْطَاسِ

    The free writer did not rend the sanctity of a pen

    With absurdities and did not jest with paper

  33. مِن معشرٍ غَيرِ أنكاسٍ ولا وُهُنٍ

    مُسْتَمْسِكينَ بِحبلِ اللهِ أكياسِ

    Of a people without baseness or weakness

    Clinging to God's rope, wise

  34. لا تَسْتَبِيحُ الدَّنايا خِيسَ مَكْرُمَةٍ

    إلا احْتَمَتْ مِن سَجاياهم بأخياسِ

    Debauchery does not make permissible the degradation

    Of an honorable deed, except it plunges in their probity

  35. هُمُ الكنانةُ تَرمي كلَّ مُرتَبِئٍ

    ضَاحِي السّهامِ وتنفِي كلَّ عَسّاسِ

    They are the fortress, striking every taking refuge

    Bold archers, banishing each transgressor

  36. لسنا مَطايا الأَذى إن حَاجةٌ عَرَضتْ

    للِغاصِبينَ وما كُنّا بِأحْلاسِ

    We are not steeds of harm, if a need arises

    For the usurpers, and we were not lax

  37. لا يَصلحُ الأَمرُ إلا في مَدارجهِ

    ولا تَطولُ الذُّرَى إلا بآساسِ

    The matter improves only gradually

    And life lengthens only with foundations

  38. لا جَفَّ مَثواكَ مِن ناءٍ تحيَّتُه

    ما في الفراديسِ مِن وَرْدٍ ومن آسِ

    Not arid is your place of rest from dew greeting it

    What is in Paradise of roses and chamomile

  39. أكبرتُ رُزءكَ حتّى ما تُجاوِرُني

    خضراءُ إلا ذَوَتْ مِن حرِّ أنفاسي

    I exalted your calamity until only the verdant

    Withered from the heat of my sighs

  40. وكيف تملكُ نَفْسِي فيكَ تأسيةً

    والحزنُ يملِكُ وِجداني وإحساسي

    How can my soul possess condolence in you

    While grief possesses my essence and sensations

  41. ليِ مِن مُصابِكَ إن نَفْسُ امْرئٍ سكَنتْ

    نَفسُ الجَريح وقلبُ الجازعِ الآسي

    I have in your affliction, if a person's soul settled

    The soul of the wounded, and the heart of the grieving comforter

  42. أبكي الكِنانةَ حَيرى لم تُصِبْ سَعَةً

    مِن الرّجاءِ ولم تَنْزَعْ إلى الياسِ

    I cry for the fortress, confused, attaining no reprieve

    Of hope, inclining toward despair

  43. ما للمآتمِ والأعراسِ مِن خَطرٍ

    مآتمي هي في الدُّنيا وأعراسي

    What danger in joys and sorrows

    My sorrows are in life, and my joys too
