1. هتفَ النعيُّ فما ملكتُ بياني

    ليت النعيَّ إلى الإِمام نعاني

    The dirge called out, but I could not express my sorrow,

    Would that my dirge were for the Imam and his supporters!

  2. ذَعر الحطيمَ وراع يثربَ عاصفٌ

    للموت ضجّ لهوله الحرمانِ

    A storm startled the dwellings and terrified Yathrib,

    Death bellowed horribly, depriving us.

  3. سهمٌ أصابَ المسلمينَ وجال في

    كبدِ الهُدَى وحُشاشةِ الإيمانِ

    An arrow struck the Muslims and pierced

    The core of guidance and the shields of faith.

  4. جَرحَ الأئمّةَ واستمرَّ فما ارعوى

    حتّى استباح مقاتلَ الفُرسانِ

    It wounded the Imams, leaving an unhealed sore

    Until the warriors were ravaged without restraint.

  5. ذهبَ الإِمامُ يُقيمُ حائطَ دينهِ

    ويراه أنفعَ ما يُقيمُ الباني

    The Imam left to fortify the faith

    Seeing that as most beneficial for the builder.

  6. ذهب المجاهدُ يشتري لبلادهِ

    عِزَّ الحياةِ بأشرفِ الأثمانِ

    The warrior left to buy honor for his land

    With the most noble of prices – his soul.

  7. بالنّفس تَستبقُ الحتوفَ كريمةً

    بين السُّيوفِ وبالنّجيع القاني

    With their souls the virtuous vie

    Between swords and spears wielded in battle.

  8. إن كنتَ تجهلُ في الكريهةِ بأسَهُ

    فالعلم عند كتائبِ الطلّيانِ

    If you do not know the extent of his valor in war

    Ask the regiments of the coated armor.

  9. قذف الغرورُ بها إلى أوطانِه

    بطلاً يصونُ محارمَ الأوطانِ

    Arrogance cast him back to his lands

    A hero preserving the sanctity of homelands.

  10. عَجلَ المغارِ إذا يُؤامرُ نَفسَهُ

    أَيُقيمُ أم يمضي الضّعيفُ الواني

    The weak wavered. Should he remain

    Or depart, the frail and wavering one?

  11. يأبى على البَطِرِ المُدِلِّ ببأسِه

    ما استنَّ من عَنَتِ ومن عُدوانِ

    He disdains, with his might, the submissive lowlands,

    Undeterred by obstinacy or transgression.

  12. نزل البلاءُ بقومه فإذا الحمى

    بيد المغير يُسامُ كلَّ هَوانِ

    Affliction befell his people, so immediately

    The contagion was in the foreigner's hand, abasing all.

  13. أخذ البلادَ فَرُوِّعت أقطارُها

    ورمى الفضاءَ فلم يَبِتْ بأمانِ

    He seized the lands and their regions trembled,

    Pelting the horizons where no safety could be found.

  14. البحرُ أحمرُ يستطير شُواظُه

    والبرُّ أغبرُ دائمُ الرَّجَفانِ

    The Red Sea roared with its billows

    And the land quaked with constant tremors.

  15. والموتُ بين بُروقِه ورُعودِهِ

    يرمى البقاعَ بوابلٍ هتّانِ

    And death, amid its lightning and thunder

    Struck the plains with a fierce torrent.

  16. ملكَ البسيطةَ والعُبابَ ولم يَدَعْ

    مَسرى النُّسورِ ومسرحَ العِقبانِ

    He claimed the wilderness and wastelands, leaving

    No refuge for eagles or haunt for falcons.

  17. ما عفَّ عن ذاتِ القناعِ ولا رعَى

    حقَّ الرّضيعِ ولا الكبيرِ الفاني

    Showing no mercy to the meek soul

    Or respecting the rights of child or aged.

  18. هاجوا الإمامَ فهاجها قُرشيَّةً

    يختالُ في غَمراتِها العُمرانِ

    They attacked the Imam, so he opposed them fiercely

    Settled in their dense settlements.

  19. هاجت لنا ذكرى وقائعَ سمحةٍ

    مأثورةٍ لابن الوليدِ حِسانِ

    The memory of glorious deeds aroused in us

    Traditions of the son of Walid, Hassan.

  20. جندُ النبيِّ يسير حول لوائِه

    وقواضبُ الله العليِّ الشّانِ

    The Prophet's army marched under his banner

    And God's fiercely valiant warriors.

  21. التركُ والعربُ الأُباةُ أنوفُهم

    سيفان في لُجَجِ الوَغى غَرِقانِ

    The defiant Arabs and Turks

    Two swords plunged in the depths of turmoil.

  22. آناً بمُلْتَطَمِ الدّماءِ وتارةً

    في جَوْفِ مُحتدَمٍ من النّيرانِ

    Now in the crashing surf of blood

    And then in the seething flames.

  23. الله ألّفَ بينهم فهمُ على

    نُعمَى الحياةِ وبُؤسِها أَخَوانِ

    God united them, so in good and ill

    They are brothers.

  24. سببان من دُنيا الشُّعوبِ ودينهم

    تتفرَّقُ البلوى ويفترقانِ

    Reasons from the world of nations and their faith

    Sowed disunity, dividing them.

  25. ما زالتِ الأحداثُ تعصِفُ ريحُها

    حتّى الْتَوَى وتقطَّع السّببانِ

    Events blew, their winds relentless

    Until they ended and the reasons split.

  26. وَارَحمتا للمسلمينَ تفرّقوا

    وتباعدوا في الأرضِ بعد تَدانِ

    Have mercy! The Muslims grew divided

    And separated across the earth after unity!

  27. فلئن بكيتُ فقد وجدتُ مُصابَهم

    في مَنكِبي وجوانحي وجَناني

    If I weep it is because I feel their pain

    In my shoulders, chest and soul.

  28. ما بالدّموع المُستهلَّةِ رِيبةٌ

    هِيَ في الجُفونِ عُصارةُ الوِجدانِ

    My streaming tears bespeak no doubt

    For they are the essence of my spirit’s fervor.

  29. مَن كان أبصرَ خطبَهم فأنا الذي

    مارستُه ولمستُه بِبناني

    I who saw their plight most clearly

    Am he who probed and grasped it in my fingertips.

  30. ما زلتُ أجمعُ بالقريضِ شَتاتَهم

    حتّى انقضى أدبي وضاع زماني

    I continued to gather their fragments in verse

    Until my craft expired and my time elapsed.

  31. انظرْ إلى الباني المُهدَّمِ واعتبرْ

    بالدّهرِ يصدعُ شامخَ البُنيانِ

    See how time destroys the towering builder.

    Consider the lessons of fate!

  32. يا مأتمَ الإسلامِ بات شهيدُه

    عَبِقَ الموسَّدِ طيِّبَ الأكفانِ

    O anguished state of Islam, your martyr

    Scented his perfumed shroud, at rest.

  33. هل للهدايةِ منكَ لوعةُ جازعٍ

    أم للحَميَّةِ فيك لهفةُ عانِ

    Does guidance elicit your grieving sighs

    Or zeal inflame in you a fiery breath?

  34. وهل اكتستْ ثوبَ الحِدادِ لفقدهِ

    أُمَمٌ تَدينُ بِمُحكَمِ الفُرقانِ

    Did nations who profess the Clear Book

    Wear the raiment of mourning for his loss?

  35. فَدحَ المصابُ فلا البكاءُ أراحَني

    مّما لَقيتُ ولا الرِّثاءُ شفاني

    The tragedy struck, yet tears brought no relief

    Nor elegy comfort from what I met.

  36. من حقِّ أحمدَ أن يكون رثاءَه

    زَجَلُ المُكِّبر عند كلّ أذانِ

    Ahmad merits the Call to Prayer as his elegy

    At every call, from the minarets.

  37. لو زِيد ركنٌ في الصلاةِ على يدي

    لجعلتُه من أَوثق الأركانِ

    If a further pillar were added to the prayer through me

    I'd make it firmest of the pillars.

  38. جار النَّبي غَنِمْتَ طيبَ جِوارِه

    وظَفِرْتَ منه بذمَّةٍ وضمانِ

    O neighbor of the Prophet! You gained his blessed company

    And enjoyed his guarantee and protection!

  39. ونَزَلتَ من غُرَفِ الجِنان بناضرٍ

    بَهِجِ القطينِ مُنَعَّم الجيرانِ

    You came down from the chambers of Paradise, blissful,

    With cheerful, delighted neighbors.

  40. انفُضْ أذى الدنيا ودَعْ ما زيّنت

    للنّاسِ من زُورٍ ومن بُهتانِ

    Leave behind the harm of life, leave the delusions

    With which it adorns itself for people - lies and slanders!

  41. واحْمَدْ مكانكَ في النَّعيمِ وطيبهِ

    إنّ الهمومَ مَلأْنَ كل مكانِ

    And, Ahmad, delight in your place of bounty and joy,

    For anxiety has filled every space.

  42. إن جلّ خطبُ المسلمين فإنّه

    دينُ الزّمانِ وسُنّةُ الحَدَثانِ

    Indeed, the condition of Muslims, for it

    Is the way of eras and law of events.

  43. دُنيا الشُّعوبِ وللحياةِ كِتابُها

    سَلَبُ الكُماةِ ومغنمُ الشُّجعَانِ

    The world of nations, and life has its own principles -

    Looting the helpless and spoils for the bold.
