1. لَمِن دمٌ في مغانِي الحيِّ مطلولُ

    يَبكي عليه هوىً في السِّربِ مَخذولُ

    For whom is there blood spilled in the meadows of the lively one,

    My passion weeps for it neglected in the thicket.

  2. أطمَعْنَ ذا الشَّوقِ حتّى لم يَدَعْ أملاً

    ثُمَّ انصرَفنَ وما فيهنَّ تَأميلُ

    You kindled this longing until you left no hope,

    Then you turned away while there was no yearning in them.

  3. يُحدِثنَ في الحبِّ ديناً كلُّه بِدعٌ

    والحبُّ دِينُ الهُدَى ما فيه تبديلُ

    They invent a religion in love, all of it heresy,

    While love is the religion of guidance without any change.

  4. يا سارِيَ البرقِ هل لي منك راحلةٌ

    أم أنتَ عن دارِها بالشّام مَشغولُ

    O you who carry the lightning, is there a mount from you for me

    Or are you preoccupied with her abode in Damascus?

  5. حَملتُ حُرَّ الهَوى والشَّوقِ في كَبدٍ

    وَلْهَى يَلوذُ بها حَرَّانُ مَتبولُ

    I carried the heat of passion and longing in a liver

    That craves it while the roses are slain.

  6. يا قلبُ وَيحكَ لا الأُردنُّ طَوعُ يَدِي

    إن جِئتَ مُستسْقِياً يوماً ولا النّيلُ

    O heart, woe to you! Neither the Jordan will obey my hands

    If I come seeking water one day, nor the Nile.

  7. مالي وللماءِ ما تجرِي جَداوِلُه

    إلا جَرَى بالمنايا فيه عِزريلُ

    What is it to me if the streams of water flow?

    Except they flow with disasters in which Azrael is swimming.

  8. أهتاجُ للموتِ يَغشاني ويُمسِكُني

    أَنِّي على ظَمَئِي والوِردُ مقتولُ

    I aspire for death to overtake me and restrain me

    That I thirst while the roses are murdered.

  9. يا طائرَ الشّامِ هَزَّتْهُ خَمائِلُهُ

    رَأْدَ الضُّحَى واسْتَخفَّتْهُ الأظاليلُ

    O bird of Syria shaken by his imaginations

    He saw the morning light and was tempted by the shadows.

  10. هَيَّجتَ في النّيل طيراً ما بأيكتهِ

    لِينٌ ولا عُودُه ريّانُ مَطلولُ

    You stirred in the Nile a bird that did not complain of your injustice,

    Gentle, its twigs not moist with sap.

  11. يَسْتَشرِفُ الطّيرَ تَستهوِي عصابتَها

    عَمياءُ آفاقُها غُبْرٌ مَجاهيلُ

    The blind horizons watch the birds settling down,

    Darkness of ignorance, empty of knowledge.

  12. أسرَى القطا حين تَستغشِي غياهبَها

    واني المطارِ وأهدى الجنِّ ضِلّيلُ

    I walked at night while its darkness overwhelmed me

    And I, the clearest guidance, went astray.

  13. ما يَنتحِي القَدَرُ الجاري بها أَمَداً

    حتّى يكونَ له رَدٌّ وتحويلُ

    Fate does not stop flowing for a period

    Until it can be repealed and transformed.

  14. ماذا يرى النّاسُ في شَعْبٍ تُهدِّمُه

    أهواؤُه وتُعفِّيهِ الأباطيلُ

    What do people see in a nation demolished by

    Its whims and nullified by superstitions?

  15. إلّا يكن طَللاً يُشجيكَ دَارِسُه

    فإنّه مَنزلٌ بالسُّوءِ مأهولُ

    Unless it is ruins that sadden its visitor,

    It is then an abode of evil, haunted.

  16. كأنَّهُ حِينَ غَالتْهُ عَمايتُه

    على الهوانِ وحُبِّ الضَّيمِ مَجبولُ

    It is as if when its blindness overwhelmed it

    Towards disgrace and the love of injustice it was created.

  17. مَشَى به الجِدُّ ثم ارتدّ مُنقَلِباً

    فَعلَ النزيفِ به من دائهُ غُولُ

    Seriousness took it and it turned back regressing

    So the hemorrhaging of its disease was violent.

  18. ألقَى به الشُؤمُ في هَوجاءَ ليس بها

    إلا اللّجاجُ وإلا القالُ والقيلُ

    Ill fortune threw it into an abyss wherein

    Nothing is but barking and mere saying and speaking.

  19. طاشتْ به تُرّهاتُ اللابسين له

    ثَوبَ الرِّياءِ وغرّته التهاويلُ

    The delusions of those wearing the garment of hypocrisy swarmed around it

    And the vain hopes deceived it.

  20. صَاحَ النَّذيرُ فلم يَفزعْ لِصَيْحَتِه

    إلا السّماواتُ لمّا اهْتَزَّ جبريلُ

    The warner cried out but none startled at his cry

    Except the heavens when Gabriel shook.

  21. مَن لي بقومٍ إذا ساروا لِطَيَّتِهم

    ساروا سواءً فلا نكبٌ ولا ميلُ

    If only my people, even if their affliction is great,

    Would chirp and rejoice.

  22. من عَلَّمَ القومَ أنّ الجِدَّ تَصديَةٌ

    لِلاعبين وأنّ المجدَ تضليلُ

    Who taught the people that seriousness is to repel

    The playful while glory is misleading?

  23. ما انفكّتِ اللَّقوةُ الشَّقواءُ جائلةً

    في الجوِّ حتّى ثَوَى في الوكرِ زغلولُ

    The miserable bad luck did not cease wandering

    In the air until it settled in its burrow, disabled.

  24. تَفْدي الجِواءَ إليهِ وهو مُنْكَدِرٌ

    دامِي الجناحِ على النّكباءِ محمولُ

    It ransoms the air to it while it is distressed,

    Wounded in the wing, carried by setbacks.

  25. تَرمِي به كلَّ خفَّاقِ المَدى قَذِفٍ

    ما تنتهِي سَعَةٌ منه ولا طُولُ

    Every whip of the horizon hurls it with a throw

    Without end or length.

  26. حتّى إذا خَرَّ طارتْ حول مَوقعِه

    هَلكَى النُّفُوسِ وضَجَّ العصرُ والجيلُ

    Until when it fell, the mortal perils swarmed around its landing site

    And the age and generation clamored and roared.

  27. أَما لِقومي وإن جَلَّتْ مُصيبتُهم

    إلا التّغاريدُ تُزجَى والتّهاليلُ

    Isn’t it so that my people, even if their misfortune is enormous,

    Have nothing but singing and celebrations?

  28. روايةٌ في شُعوبِ الشَّرق رائعةٌ

    لها على مَلعبِ الأجيالِ تمثيلُ

    A story in the peoples of the East wonderful

    It acts on the theater of generations.

  29. يا سعدُ عَلِّلْ نُفوسَ القومِ ثانيةً

    إن كان ينفعُ بعدَ اليومِ تعليلُ

    O Saad, explain again the souls of the people

    If any explaining benefits after this day.

  30. قُلْ للمحامين رُدُّوا من أَعِنَّتِكم

    ضَاعَ الحِمَى وَاسْتُبِيح اللَّيْثُ والغيلُ

    Say to the advocates, take back from your help,

    The sanctuary is wasted and the lion and the young lion are ravaged.

  31. وَيْليِ على الفَارسِ المِغوارِ إذ حَسرتْ

    عنه الدُّروعُ وخانته السَّرابيلُ

    Woe unto me from the intrepid horseman when

    The shields deserted him and the coats of mail betrayed him.

  32. دَارتْ رَحَى الحربِ فينا دَوْرَةً عجباً

    فارتدَّ مُسْتَبسِلٌ وانقضَّ إجفيلُ

    The mill of war turned among us wondrously

    So the submissive one recoiled and the brave one retreated.

  33. إنّي نصحتُ لِقومي قبل مَصرعِهم

    لو أنّ نُصحَ ذوي الألبابِ مقبولُ

    I advised my people before their death

    If only the advice of reasonable people were accepted.

  34. مالي وللشّعر هل تَهدي رَوائِعُه

    مَن ليس يَهْديه قُرآنٌ وإنجيلُ

    What is it to me if the wonders of poetry

    Cannot guide someone not guided by Quran or Bible?

  35. ليسوا بقوميَ إن طَالتْ جهالتُهم

    وظَلَّ يخدعُهم ظنٌّ وتَخييلُ

    They are not my people if their ignorance is prolonged

    And an assumption and imagining continues to deceive them.

  36. قَومِي الأُلىَ لا غطاءٌ فوق أَعْيُنِهِم

    ولا حجابٌ على الألبابِ مسدولُ

    My intimate people have no covering over their eyes

    Nor a barrier over the insights shut off.

  37. يا وَيْحَ للشرقِ هل قامت به أُممٌ

    تَستنفِدُ العدَّ أم قامتْ تماثيلُ

    Oh what a pity for the East! Did nations rise in it

    That spend wholly or did statues rise?

  38. سالت عليهم ذِئابُ الغَرْبِ تأكلُهم

    كذلكَ العاجزُ المغلوبُ مأكولُ

    The wolves of the West attacked them, eating them,

    Thus is the helpless defeated one eaten.

  39. أقولُ للقومِ فَوضَى في مَذاهِبهم

    سِيرُوا على سَنَنِ الأحياء أو زُولوا

    I say to the people, chaos in their doctrines,

    Walk the ways of the living or vanish.

  40. لوذوا بركنٍ من الأخلاقِ مُمتنِعٍ

    تَهوِي الفيالقُ عنهُ والأساطيلُ

    Take refuge in an impregnable moral pillar

    Against which armies and fleets crash and vanish.

  41. لاهُمَّ أدرِكْ شُعوباً بَاتَ يُرمِضُها

    عَيْشٌ لها في رُبوعِ الشّرقِ مملولُ

    Oh moment, overtake peoples whom

    A life poured upon them in the lands of the East has wearied.

  42. لاهُمَّ إن تكُنِ العُقبَى لِمُحتسِبٍ

    فَهَبْ لنا الصّبرَ حتّى يُدرَكَ السُّولُ

    Oh moment, if the future belong to one who perseveres

    Then grant us patience until the rough ground is traversed.
