هُمْ سَادَةُ الحربِ من شِيبٍ وشُبّانِ

ساروا سِراعاً فما في القومِ من وَانِ

They are the masters of war, young and old,

حِيدي جُهَيْنَةُ أو بِيدي مُذَمَّمةً

حُمَّ القضاءُ وخَفَّتْ أُسْدُ خفّانِ

Either my sword Juhaina or my spear Mudhammamah,

Destiny has decided and the lions of Khuzaa have weakened,

سريّةُ اللهِ ترمي عن يَدَيْ بطلٍ

عالي اللواءِ رفيعِ القَدْرِ والشّانِ

An act of God throws in front of the hero,

Of high banners, of sublime rank and glory,

أبا عُبيدَةَ أَوْرِدْها مُظَفَّرَةً

مَوارِدَ النّصرِ تَشفِي كلَّ حَرّانِ

O Abu Ubaydah make it a victorious thrust,

The thrusts of victory heal every burning wound,

ما للحفِيظَةِ إن جاشَتْ مَراجِلُها

إلا القواضِبُ تُسقَى بالدّمِ القاني

What is left for the cursed ones when their cooking pots boil,

Except the ships that are watered with filthy blood,

خانت قُريشُ وأمسى عَهدُها كَذِباً

فَبَادِرِ العيرَ وَاضْرِبْ كُلَّ خَوَّانِ

Quraish betrayed and their covenant became a lie,

So attack the caravan and strike every traitor,

لا يعجبنّ جُناةُ الشرّ إن حَصَدوا

ما يزرعُ الشُّؤْمُ من بَغْيٍ وعُدوانِ

The sinners of evil should not be amazed if they reap,

What the evil of transgression and aggression planted,

لا تبتئسْ بجرابِ التمرِ يحملُهُ

أولو الحميَّةِ من صَحْبٍ وإخوانِ

Do not be disheartened by the bag of dates carried,

By the people of zeal from companions and brothers,

أُعجوبةٌ ما لها في الدّهرِ من مَثَلٍ

لكنَّ ربَّكَ ذُو فضلٍ وإحسانِ

It is a wonder that has no parallel in time,

But your Lord is of grace and beneficence,

إن يَنفدِ الزّادُ أغناكم وزوّدكم

ما ليس يَنفدُ من تقوىً وإيمانِ

If the provisions run out, He will make you self-sufficient and provide you,

With what does not run out of righteousness and faith,

كُلُوا من الخَبْطِ نِعمَ الخَبْطُ من أُكُلٍ

لكلّ ذي سَغَبٍ في اللهِ طَيَّانِ

Eat from al-Khabt, excellent is al-Khabt to eat,

For everyone with passion in the way of God a wanderer,

حيّاكُمُ اللهُ من صِيدٍ غَطَارِفَةٍ

يلقون في البؤسِ عيشَ النّاعمِ الهاني

May God greet you from the prey of energetic hawks,

Who find in misery the life of the soft and despised,

هِيَ النّفوسُ بناها اللهُ من شَممٍ

نِعمَ البناءُ وجَلَّتْ قدرةُ الباني

They are the souls that God has created from ambition,

Excellent is the creation and great is the ability of the Maker,

وأنتَ يا قيسُ فانْحَرْها مُبَارَكةً

تَجنِي بها الحَمْدَ يسْتَعلِي به الجاني

And you, O Qays, so send it blessed,

You will gain praise by it and the exalted will rise,

أسديتَها يا ابنَ سعدٍ خيرَ عارفةٍ

جاءَتْ على قَدَرٍ في خيرِ إبّانِ

You gave it, O son of Sa’d, the best caretaker,

It came at the right measure at the best time,

ما في صَنيعِكَ من بِدْعٍ ولا عَجَبٍ

قَيسٌ ووالدُهُ في الجودِ سِيّانِ

There is no innovation or wonder in your deed,

Qays and his father are equal in generosity,

كِلاكُما وسيوفُ اللهِ شاهدةٌ

غَوْثُ اللّهيفِ وَروْحُ البائِسِ العاني

You both and the swords of God bear witness,

To helping the weak and comforting the suffering complainant,

ما أقربَ الحقَّ ممّا يَبتغي عُمَرٌ

لو لم تكنْ لأبٍ للحقِّ صَوَّانِ

Were it not for you deciding on,

Qays, Qays would have insisted, how you forbid me,

يَقضيهِ عنكَ وإن أربيتَ تجعلُهُ

ما تحملُ الأرضُ من إبْلٍ ومن ضَانِ

I am the son of Sa’d and Sa’d you know him,

The guardian of the clan from Qaas and from Daan,

ما مِثلُ ما قَدَّمَتْ للهِ منك يدٌ

ما قَدَّمَ النّاسُ من هَدْيٍ وقُربانِ

It is enough for the concerned when the shoulders are too narrow for him,

أبا عُبَيْدَةَ لولا أن عزمتَ على

قيسٍ لأَمعنَ قيسٌ أيَّ إمعانِ

Shall I do the praiseworthy deed and be let down,

By a father whom I see as better support for others?

يَقولُ إذ رُحتَ تَنهاهُ وتَمنعُهُ

أبا عُبيدَةَ مَهْلاً كيف تنهاني

God does not distance from him a caring father,

Of easy manners, he cared for him and cares for me,

أنا ابنُ سعدٍ وسعدٌ أنتَ تعرِفُهُ

مَوْلَى العشيرَةِ من قاصٍ ومن دانِ

O Qays, the Messenger of God bears witness to him,

So refrain yourself from description and explanation,

يَكفي المُهِمَّ إذا ضاقَ الكُفاةُ به

ويُطعِمُ النّاسَ من مَثْنَىً وَوُحدَانِ

Juhainah glanced with eyes of horror,

But did not find anyone but heroes and horsemen,

أأصنعُ الصُّنْعَ مَحموداً فَيخذِلُني

أبٌ أراه لغيرِي خيرَ مِعوانِ

It took refuge in its furthest burrows, and if it could,

It would have taken refuge from the hordes in burrows,

لا يُبعِدِ اللهُ منه والداً حَدِباً

سمحَ الخلائِقِ أرعاهُ ويرعاني

The caravan fled fearing it would be surrounded,

By the horrors, they are its lords, every devil,

يا قيسُ إنّ رسولَ اللهِ شاهِدُهُ

فَعَدِّ نَفسَكَ عن وصفٍ وتبيانِ

What is enough for the people if they get angry?

That they do not succeed with peers and equals,

رَمَتْ جُهَيْنَةُ بالأبْصَارِ من فَزَعٍ

فلم تَجِدْ غيرَ أبطالٍ وفُرسانِ

They came in good and every group came,

Of the horrors, they disliked good things with loss,

لاذَتْ بأكنانِها القُصوى ولو قَدرتْ

لاذتْ من الزّاخرِ الطّامِي بأكنانِ

Truth has its authority so let its denier come,

If he can, with proof to rebut it,

وولّتِ العِيرُ يخشى أن يُحاطَ بها

من الأُلَى هُمْ ذَووها كلُّ شيطانِ

The proof of polytheism while the universe bears witness,

To the One Eternal Owner of kingdom, the Judge,

ماذا على القَوْمِ يرضَى البأسُ إن غَضبوا

أن لا يفوزوا بأكفاءٍ وأقرانِ

Glory to Him, the ignorant will never attain,

Throughout fanciful imagination, a second lord to Him,

آبوا بخيرٍ وآبتْ كلُّ طائفةٍ

من الأُلى كَرِهوا الحُسْنَى بِخُسرانِ

An engulfing darkness came over them that does not clear,

And overwhelmed minds diseased and disturbed,

للحقِّ سُلطانُهُ فليأتِ مُنكِرُهُ

إنِ اسْتَطاعَ له رَدّاً بِسُلطَانِ

These proofs appear every now and then,

If the blind could benefit from proof,

ما حُجَّةُ الشِّركِ والأكوانُ شاهِدَةٌ

بواحدٍ سَرمَدِيِّ المُلكِ دَيّانِ

Brother of Juhainah, return in a delightful spectacle,

The return of a man cheerful of limbs, openhanded,

سُبحانهُ لن يُصيبَ الجاهلونَ على

طُولِ التَّوهُّمِ من ربٍّ لهم ثانِ

Dates and clothes bestowed and a she-camel,

Good tidings of the truthful and misery for the hostile detractor,

طاحَتْ بهم غَمرةٌ ما تَنجَلي وطَغَتْ

على عُقولٍ لهم مَرْضَى وأذهانِ

You recognized Qays, a young man of glory and generosity,

You spoke the truth, you are of knowledge and discernment,

تلك البراهينُ تترى كلَّ آونةٍ

لو كان ينتفعُ الأعمى بِبرهانِ

Inform Juhainah and remind it of a hand that grew great,

For there is no right that it be rewarded with forgetfulness,

أخا جُهَيْنَةَ عُدْ في منظرٍ بَهِجٍ

عَوْدَ امرئٍ مَرِحِ الأعطافِ جَذلانِ

When a man's religion flows in his blood,

Its meanings joyfully course through soul and body,

تَمْرٌ وكُسْوَةُ مِعطاءٍ وراحلةٌ

بُشْرَى الصّديقِ وبؤْس الحاسِدِ الشّاني

No religion ordained of truthfulness and piety,

Like the religion ordained of lies and false accusations,

عَرَفَت قيساً فتى مجدٍ ومكرمةٍ

صدقتَ إنَّكَ ذو علمٍ وعرفانِ

نَبِّئْ جُهَينَةَ واذكرها يداً عظمتْ

فليس في الحقِّ أن تُجزَى بنسيانِ

إذا تدفَّقَ دِينُ المرءِ في دمِهِ

سَرَتْ معانِيهِ في رُوحٍ وجُثمانِ

ما الدينُ يُشرَعُ من صدقٍ ومن وَرَعٍ

كالدينِ يُشرَعُ من زورٍ وبُهتانِ
