They called for Egypt's independence, so we've
come to know the hidden aspects of the matter and the cover lifted.
They called for your independence, O people, but we
disavow this independence of yours.
Take it to the graves and bury it
and say to the president, "long live!"
If there be another scheme, then so be it,
otherwise there remains but discontent and refusal.
Leave it clamor without good,
for neither hue nor cry avail.
Does the zeal of every free man anger you,
provoked by his chivalry and loyalty?
Take away your fools from us, O people,
for patience and propriety have long endured.
Shall I turn away from your talk though
the necks of evil refuse? That is your affliction.
Are we free men who struggle, or merchants?
Is there in Egypt buying or selling?
