هنيئاً أبا سُفيانَ لا الذخرُ هَيِّنٌ

ولا الأجرُ مَمنونٌ ولا أنت مَغبونُ

Congratulations, O Abu Sufyan, neither wealth slighted,

Nor reward denied, nor you left wanting.

هو الغنمُ لم يُقْدَرْ لغير مُوفَّقٍ

له مشهدٌ في حَوْمَةِ الحربِ ميمونُ

It is the profit, unfailing to the fortunate one,

For him a vision in the heat of war made certain.

حملتَ أبا سُفيانَ عَينكَ في يدٍ

بها الخيرُ في كلِّ المواطنِ مَقرونُ

You carried Abu Sufyan in your eye willingly,

With it, goodness in all places paired.

وجِئتَ رسولَ اللهِ لا الوجهُ شاحبٌ

ولا العِطفُ مُزْوَرٌّ ولا القلبُ مَحزونُ

And you came to Allah's Messenger, face not wan,

Nor sympathy feigned, nor heart downcast.

تقول له عَيني التي أنتَ ناظرٌ

مَضَتْ في سبيلِ اللهِ والحافزُ الدِّينُ

You say to him, “My eye which you see

Has gone in God's path, and faith the motive.”

فقال إذا أحببتَ فالردُّ مُمكِنٌ

بِقُدرةِ ربِّ أمرُه الكافُ والنُّونُ

So he said, “If you wish, restoration possible

By power of the Lord, His command complete and blessed.”

وإلا فأُخرَى عنده إن لَقِيتَهُ

وذلك وَعْدٌ عِندَ ربِّكَ مَضمونُ

“Or else another with Him if you meet Him,

And that's a promise with your Lord made sure.”

فآثرتَ هَذِي ثمَّ ألقيتَ بالتي

حَمَلْتَ وما في الحقِّ أن يُؤثَرَ الدُّونُ

So you chose this, then discarded the one

You carried, and in truth, the lesser not preferred.

سَتَتْبَعُها في وَقعةِ الرُّومِ أخْتُها

إذا حانَ منها بعد ذلكمُ الحِينُ

It will follow it in the battle of Rome, its sister,

When the time for it after that arrives.

فخيرٌ على خيرٍ ونُعمَى تزيدها

من اللهِ نُعمى سِرُّها عنك مَكنونُ

Better upon better, and blessing He increases

From God - its secret from you concealed.

هنيئاً أبا سُفيانَ لا الرُّمحُ آسفٌ

ولا السَّيفُ مكروبٌ ولا العزمُ موْهونُ

Congratulations, O Abu Sufyan, neither spear sorrowing,

Nor sword depressed, nor resolve subdued.

عَطاؤُكَ في الهيجاءِ لم يُعْطَ مِثلَهُ

من النّاسِ إلا صادقُ البأسِ مأمونُ

Your giving in distress - none given its like

But the stalwart in might, faithful and secure.
