1. أَتسألُ مِصرُ ما حَملَ العميدُ

    وهل عند الرُماةِ لها جديدُ

    Does Egypt ask what the leader has brought

    And if the archers have anything new?

  2. هو السَّهمُ الذي عَرَفَتهُ قِدماً

    وجَرَّبَ وَقعَهُ الشَّعبُ الوئيدُ

    It is the arrow that it knew of old

    Whose might the enduring people have tried

  3. تَمرَّدَ مُبدِئٌ وطغى مُعيدُ

    ولم تَزلِ الرَّميَّةُ تَستزيدُ

    A rebel arose and an oppressor prevailed

    And the shooting did not cease asking for more

  4. مسيحَ الهندِ إنّ بمصرَ شعباً

    يَشُقُّ عليكَ إن خَضَعَ الهنودُ

    O Savior of India, in Egypt there is a people

    It would pain you if the Indians submitted

  5. فأنْصِفْ مصر وَاعْصِ القومَ فيها

    إذا اطّردَ الحديثُ وهم شُهودُ

    So be fair to Egypt and oppose the people in it

    When discourse flows and they are witnesses

  6. فما نظرَ المُسالمُ أين تبغي

    ولا عرفَ المُساوِمُ ما تُريدُ

    The peaceful did not see what you desire

    Nor did the bargaining know what you want

  7. دعِ الزُّعماءَ إنّ لهم لَديناً

    يَدينُ بغيره الشَّعبُ الرشيدُ

    Leave the leaders be, for with us they have a debt

    Which the judicious people will hold them to sans other

  8. إذا ذكروا الزَّعامةَ فهي دعوى

    يكيدُ بها الكنانةَ مَن يكيدُ

    When they speak of leadership it is a claim

    Through which the crafty scheme against the crafty

  9. وما تبقى البلادُ إذا أُصِيبَتْ

    بِمَنْ يبغي الزعامةَ يَستفيدُ

    And the countries do not remain if

    Stricken by those who seek leadership to gain

  10. غُزاةُ الشَّعبِ والشّعبُ المواضي

    وأسرابُ الصوافنِ والجنودُ

    The invaders of the people and the people who yield

    And the hordes of cavalry and the troops

  11. رَمُوه به فنال السَّهمُ منه

    بقيّةَ ما رمى الخَصمُ العنيدُ

    They shot him with it and the arrow took from him

    The rest of what the stubborn foe had shot

  12. تأمّلْ هل ترى إلا شُعاعاً

    تَفرّقَ في الجِواءِ فما يعودُ

    Consider, do you see anything but a ray

    Scattered in the air that does not return?

  13. تطيرُ الذّارياتُ به سِراعاً

    دوائبَ ما لعاصِفها رُكودُ

    The scattering Winnowers take it swiftly

    Creatures whose storm has no stillness

  14. كأنّ القومَ حين جَرَى عليهم

    قضاءُ اللهِ عادٌ أو ثَمودُ

    As if when the decree of God befell them

    They were ʿĀd or Thamūd of old

  15. لِمَنْ تتألَّبُ الأحزابُ شتّى

    وما هذي الصَّواعقُ والرُّعودُ

    For whom do factions scheme so diversely

    And what are these lightning bolts and clamors?

  16. تَداعَوا للوغَى فَهَوى صريعاً

    على أَيديهمُ الوطنُ الشّهيدُ

    They assembled for turmoil and the nation fell

    Slain at their hands, a martyr it died

  17. مَضَتْ أسلابُه تُزجَى إليهم

    فمأتمُه لدى الأقوامِ عيدُ

    Its spoils are dragged to them

    And its funeral for the nations is a feast

  18. تَضِجُّ جُموعُهم فَرحاً إذا ما

    دعا بِمُصابهِ النَّاعي المُشيدُ

    Their throngs clamor joyously when

    The tearful eulogist laments its plight

  19. بَرِئتُ إلى الكنانةِ من أُناسٍ

    أضاعوها فليس لها وجودُ

    To the crafty I am done with people

    Who lost it, for it has no existence

  20. قَضَيْنا الدّهرَ ننشدها فضاقت

    مذاهبُنا وأخفقتِ الجُهودُ

    We spent our lives seeking it but our ways parted

    And efforts failed and hopes dashed

  21. لَعُمركَ إنَّ ما تَعِدُ الأماني

    لَحسْبُ النّفسِ لو وَفَتِ الوعودُ

    By your life, what hopes promise

    Is enough for the soul if promises kept!

  22. عميدَ الغاصبين نزلتَ أرضاً

    يَبيدُ الغاصبون ولا تَبيدُ

    Leader of usurpers, you descended on a land

    Where usurpers perish but it does not perish

  23. يَذودُ الواحدُ القهّارُ عنها

    إذا قَهرتْ جُنودُك مَن يذودُ

    The One Irresistible protects it

    When your armies defeat whoever protects

  24. أَتذكرُ إذ لِقَومكَ ما أرادوا

    وإذ لكرومَرَ البطشُ الشّديدُ

    Do you remember when your people wished

    And Cromer had harsh tyranny?

  25. تطوفُ جُنودُه فَتصيدُ منّا

    ومن سِربِ الحمائم ما تصيدُ

    His troops would hunt us

    And hunt from the flock of doves what they hunted

  26. أتذكرُ دُنشوايَ وكيف كادت

    جوانبُها بأهليها تَميدُ

    Do you remember Denshawai and how

    Its sides almost collapsed upon its people?

  27. تضِجُّ من العذابِ ولا سبيلٌ

    إلى غير العذابِ ولا مَحيدُ

    It shrieks from torment and there is no way

    To aught but torment and no respite

  28. أقامت لا يُتاحُ لها هُبوطٌ

    يزولُ بها ولا يُقضَى صُعودُ

    It stood with no descent to relieve it

    Or passing away and no rising up

  29. ولو ظَفِرَتْ بأجنحةٍ لأَمْسَتْ

    لها بين النُّسور مَدىً بعيدُ

    Had it wings it would have ranged

    Far among the eagles in breadth

  30. يُديرُ بها على القومِ المنايا

    قضاءٌ تَستبدُّ به الحقودُ

    Fate would have turned misfortunes upon the people

    Destinies that resentments deliver

  31. أقاموها على الضُّعفاءِ حرباً

    من العُدوانِ ليس لها خُمودُ

    They waged against the weak a war

    With unceasing injustice that does not sleep

  32. فما تعيا المشانقُ بالضّحايا

    ولا تَفْنَى السِّياطُ ولا الجلودُ

    Neither gallows tire of victims

    Nor whips and leather ever sate

  33. لئن فَزِعَ الفَتى والشّيخُ منها

    فما أمِنَ الجنينُ ولا الوليدُ

    If youth and elder recoiled therefrom

    Neither infant nor newborn were safe

  34. يُعاقبُنا الجنُاةُ ولا كتابٌ

    يُقامُ به القَضاءُ ولا حُدودُ

    The criminals punish us with no book

    To establish justice or laws

  35. سُيوفُ الجُندِ مَظهرُ كلِّ حقِّ

    ورأيُ كُرومَرَ الرأيُ السَّديدُ

    The swords of the soldiers are the face of every right

    And Cromer's view is the sound view

  36. أتذكرُ إذ نُعاتِبُه فيطغى

    ويَهدِرُ في مقالتِه الوعيدُ

    Do you remember when we would blame him and he would rage

    And thunder in his threats ominously?

  37. أَخذناهُ بقارعةٍ ألحَّتْ

    عليه فزالَ واشْتَفتِ الكُبودُ

    We grasped him with a shaking that pressed

    Upon him and doubts cleared away

  38. صَدعنا ركنَهُ فانقضَّ يهوِي

    وذابَ الصَّخرُ أجمعُ والحديدُ

    We cracked his pillar and he collapsed crumbling

    And the boulder altogether melted, and iron

  39. هَوَى جَبَلٌ من العُدوانِ عالٍ

    وزُلزِلَ للأَذَى صَرحٌ مَشيدُ

    A lofty mountain of injustice fell

    And a built fortress collapsed, harm intended

  40. ونحن القائمون بحقِّ مِصرٍ

    إذا ما اسْتسلمَ القومُ القُعودُ

    And we stand for Egypt's right

    When the submissive people surrender

  41. نَضِنُّ بِمصرَ إن عَدَتِ العوادي

    ولكنّا بأنفسنا نجودُ

    We will defend Egypt if calamities recur

    But we ourselves are openhanded

  42. هي الذّممُ المصونةُ والعُهودُ

    فما يبغي كرومرُ أو لُويدُ

    These are protected compacts and pacts

    Cromer and Lloyd do not desire

  43. أخا السّكسون هل نُبِّئتَ أنّا

    جلاوزةٌ لِقومكَ أو عبيدُ

    Saxon brother, were you told that we

    Are disobedient to your people or slaves?

  44. لقد كذبوا عليكَ فليس فينا

    لمن يبغي الهضميةَ مُستَقيدُ

    They have lied to you, for among us there is none

    For whom coercion is appropriate when he dislikes

  45. إذا سَعَتِ الوفودُ إليكَ فاحْذَرْ

    عواقِبَ ما تقولُ لكَ الوُفودُ

    When delegations flock to you, beware

    The consequences of what the delegations say

  46. فما أحدٌ بمالكِ أمرِ مِصرٍ

    وما بالشّعبِ جُبْنٌ أو جُمودُ

    None rules Egypt, and in the people is no

    Cowardice or stillness

  47. مَضَتْ دُنيا القُيودِ وتلك دُنيا

    تُذَمُّ بها وتُحتقرُ القُيودُ

    The world of shackles has passed, and that is a world

    Disdained in which shackles are scorned

  48. أتلك ديارُنا أم نحن مَوْتَى

    تُقامُ لنا المقابرُ واللُّحودُ

    Are those our abodes or are we dead

    With tombs erected for us and shrouds?

  49. حمينا ما حمى الآباءُ قِدماً

    وصانَ لنا وللنّيلِ الجُدودُ

    We protected what forebears protected before

    And the ancestral blood protected for us and the Nile

  50. بلادٌ ما تُباعُ وباقياتٌ

    من الآثارِ مَعدِنُها الخُلودُ

    A land that cannot be sold and remnants

    Whose origin is eternity and endurance

  51. أَيسمعُ صَيْحَتِي في مِصرَ قومٌ

    هُمُ اللَّهبُ المؤجَّجُ والوقودُ

    In Egypt, do my cries reach a people

    Who are blazing flames and fuel?

  52. أبرُّ الناسِ عندهمُ المُداجِي

    وشرُّ القومِ ذو النُّصْحِ الوَدودُ

    The most dutiful among them finds fault

    And the kindest people give sincere advice

  53. رَأَوْا بُرهانَ شاعرِهم فزاغوا

    وللأحداثِ شاعِرُها المُجيدُ

    They saw the proof of their poet so they inclined away

    For events has its eloquent poet

  54. رماهم بالزّواخرِ لا ارتيابٌ

    إذا رَمَتِ الوجوهَ ولا جُحودُ

    He pelted them with censures—no doubt—

    When faces are pelted there is no denial

  55. تَموجُ مع الدياجرِ في يَدَيْهِ

    صحائفُ من خطوب الدّهرِ سُودُ

    With him billow the scrolls of the tribulations of fate

    Black pages of speeches destiny has wrought

  56. له في كلّ آونةٍ جديدٌ

    من البلْوَى يُقالُ له نشيدُ

    For him in every time there is something new

    Of calamities for which a poem is composed

  57. لنا منه النحوسُ تُصيبُ منّا

    مواطنها وللقوم السُّعودُ

    From him misfortunes strike us

    At their places, and the people have good fortune

  58. أما والنّاهضين لغير مصرٍ

    لقد عثرت بنا وبها الجدودُ

    But by those exerting for aught but Egypt

    Our ancient blood and it have stumbled

  59. إذا سادَ التخاذلُ في أُناسٍ

    فأَعوزُ ما ترى شعبٌ يسودُ

    When resignation spreads among people

    The most feeble nation can prevail?
