مرحباً بالوفدِ وافى من هَجَرْ

يَبتغي الدِّينَ ويأبى من كَفَرْ

Welcome the delegation who came from afar

Seeking religion and rejecting disbelief

لا خَزايا لا نَدامَى إنّهم

زُمْرةٌ ما مِثلُها بين الزُّمَرْ

They have no regrets or remorse, they are

A group unlike any other group

ظفروا إذ قَبَّلوا خيرَ يَدٍ

وخِيارُ النّاسِ أوْلَى بالظَّفرْ

They succeeded when they kissed the best hand

And the best people deserve success

نَزَل الحقُّ على شاعِرِهم

ساطعَ الحُجّةِ وضَّاحَ الأثَرْ

Truth descended upon their poet

Self-evident in argument, clear in influence

صَدَق الجارودُ إنّ اللهَ قد

أرسلَ القومَ إلى هادِي البَشَرْ

Al-Jārūd spoke truly that Allah

Sent these people to the guide of mankind

جاء في إنجيلِ عِيسَى ذِكرُهُ

فأتى ينظرُ مِصداقَ الخَبَرْ

The mention of him came in Jesus' Gospel

So he came to see the fulfillment of the news

لم يَزَلْ يَسألُهُ حتَّى بَدا

من يقينِ الأمرِ ما كانَ اسْتتَر

He kept asking about him until there appeared

From the certainty of the matter what had been hidden

زَادَهم من علمِهِ ما زادهم

ولديهِ من مزيدٍ مُدَّخَرْ

He increased them in knowledge from his knowledge

And from his treasured surplus

كَشَفَ اللهُ له عما انْطَوى

في زوايا الغيبِ عنه فَظَهَرْ

God unveiled for him what was obscured

In the corners of the unseen then appeared

هذه الأرضُ وهذا نخلها

تتراءى فيه أنواعُ الثَّمرْ

This land and its palms

All kinds of fruits are seen in it

آثروا الإسلامَ دِيناً وانْقَضى

ما أضلَّ القومَ من دينٍ نُكُرْ

They chose Islam as a religion and passed away

What had misled people of false religions

أُمِروا بالخيرِ طُرّاً مالهم

منهُ بُدٌّ ونُهوا عن كلِّ شرّ

They were commanded with good, obligatorily theirs

No alternative, and prohibited from all evil

لهجوا بالخمرِ ثُمَّ ازْدَجرُوا

وعنِ الخمرِ غِنىً للمُزدجِرْ

They decried wine, then abstained

And abstained from wine, sufficient for the abstainer

وفْدَ عبدِ القيسِ لا تعدِلْ بكم

ظُلمةُ الرأيِ عن النهْجِ الأغرّ

The delegation of Abdul Qais, no darkness of opinion

Can equate you to the shining path

ليس في الخمرِ شِفاءٌ لامرئٍ

من سقامٍ أو وقاءٌ من ضَرَرْ

There is no cure for anyone in wine

From illness, nor protection from harm

احذروها إنَّها المكرُ الذي

مَكَرَ الشيطانُ في ماضِيِ العُصُرْ

Beware of it, it is the cunning

That Satan schemed in past eras

هِيَ للأقوامِ شَرٌّ وأذىً

وَهْيَ للبغضاءِ نَارٌ تَستَعِرْ

It is evil and harm for the people

And for hatred it is a kindling fire

ليس مَن بَرَّ فأرضَى رَبَّهُ

مِثلَ من أرضَى هَواهُ وفَجَرْ

Not like one who does good and satisfies his Lord

Is one who satisfies his desire and transgresses

حَسْبُكم ما كانَ مِنها وكفَى

ما رأيتُمْ أو سَمِعْتُم من عِبَر

Sufficient for you is what was of it and enough

Is what you have seen or heard of lessons

في رسولِ اللهِ إذ نَبَّأكم

ببلايا الخمرِ آياتٌ كُبَرْ

In the Messenger of Allah when he informed you

Of wine's afflictions, great signs

انتهُوا عن كلِّ ما عَنْهُ نَهَى

وَافْعَلوا مِن كلِّ أمرٍ ما أمرْ

Refrain from all he prohibited

And do all he commanded

اسألوا هذا الفتَى عن شيخِكم

واسألوني عن أعاجيبِ القَدَرْ

Ask this lad about your sheikh

And ask me about the wonders of fate

صُورةٌ زالتْ وأُخرى بَرزتْ

من تصاويرِ المليكِ المقتدِرْ

One image faded and another emerged

From the images of the Capable King

اسألوا الحاضرَ عمَّنْ غابَ أو

فاسألوا الغائبَ عمن قد حَضَر

Ask the present about the absent or

Ask the absent about the present

ذَهَبَ المجنونُ مهدودَ القُوى

وأتَى العاقلُ مَشدودَ المِرَر

The madman left, his strength spent

And the sane came, his will resolute

قُدرةُ اللهِ تجلَّتْ في يدٍ

لعظيمِ الجاهِ ميمونِ الأثرْ

God's power was manifest in a hand

Of great glory, blessed in influence
