1. ويلي على هذي الجوائب

    جآت عليّ من النوائب

    Alas for these compositions

    That came to me from misfortunes

  2. هاجت عليّ الناس من

    خل ومعرفة وصاحب

    People attacked me

    With malice, enmity and rivalry

  3. فتألبوا لخصامها

    زمرا كأنهم كتائب

    So they formed groups against it

    Like regiments of soldiers

  4. اودعتها من كل ما

    شاق الاديب من الغرائب

    I endowed it with all

    That tries the talents of a writer

  5. ولها سهرت ليالي اعتكرت

    باحلاك المصائب

    And spent sleepless nights on it

    Woven with calamities

  6. وصرفت فيها الجهد

    اجمع صرف نقاد محاسب

    And exerted on it the utmost effort

    More than critics can calculate

  7. وكسوتها من نسج نظمي

    محكما حلل المناقب

    And clothed it in the fabric of my verse

    With robes of virtues

  8. وجلوتها بكرا على الخطباء

    جلت عن شوائب

    And crowned it with diadems

    Free from blemishes

  9. لكنها من سوء حظي

    لم تفز منهم بخاطب

    But due to my misfortune

    It did not win a suitor

  10. فتباعدوا عنها تبا

    عد من يخاف من المعاطب

    So they shunned it completely

    As one who fears reproach would shun

  11. وتجسسوا عن ذأمها

    وهي البراء من المعايب

    And they spied on its flaws

    While it is free of defects

  12. قال المشاغب انها

    بدع وحظر البدع واجب

    The troublemaker said it is

    An innovation, and innovation is forbidden

  13. وبها عويص اللفظ مجهدة

    لخاطر كل كاتب

    It has intricate language, exhausting

    The mind of every writer

  14. ما ان عهدنا مثلها

    من قبل في احد المكاتب

    We never knew its like

    In any of the bureaus before

  15. وبها كلام في السيا

    سة بين مغلوب وغالب

    It has words about politics

    Between victor and vanquished

  16. واصول اشتملت على

    فقه المراتب والمناصب

    And fundamentals comprising

    The jurisprudence of ranks and positions

  17. ورسوم ارض لم تطأ

    اقدامنا فيها مناكب

    And features of a land our feet

    Have never trodden

  18. انا اذا جدنا بدينار

    على ذا فهو ذاهب

    If we ever spend a dinar

    On this then it will be lost

  19. ان الحوادث عندنا

    هي ان تبين عن العجائب

    News for us is to relate

    Wonders and curiosities

  20. وعن الخزائن والدفا

    ئن والمعادن والمكاسب

    And treasures, chests, mines and profits

    Amulets, spells and binding charms

  21. وعن الطلاسم والرقى

    والنفث في عقد المطالب

    Social gatherings, drinks and loved ones

    Newspapers, sorrows and mining pits

  22. وعن المنادم والمسا

    مر والاحبة والحبائب

    So that every statement in it

    Is considered a curiosity

  23. وعن الجرائد والكوا

    عب والمحاجر والمشانب

    And its first section

    Warns of consequences

  24. فتكون كل مقالة فيها

    فيها تعد من الغرائب

    And it entertains listeners

    Beyond food, drinks

  25. وتكون أول فقرة

    منها تدل على العواقب

    Beddings, clothes, entertainments and playgrounds

    And warmth for the wretched

  26. وتكون تغني السامعين

    عن المآكل والمشارب

    Then chains for the debauched

    And a crutch for the old

  27. وعن المفارش والملا

    بس والملاهي والملاعب

    And varieties matching

    The number of planets

  28. وتكون للمقرور دفئا

    ثم سلسلات للائب

    This is what you blamed it for

    While the blamer is blameworthy

  29. وتكون خذروف الصبا

    يا ثم عكاز الشهارب

    By your life, I am not arrogant

    Nor demanding on the chord

  30. وتكون اكوانا والوانا

    على عدد الكواكب

    If I could punish the sin

    Of a brother I would not punish

  31. هذا الذي عيبت به والعيب

    من قبل المعايب

    If your maternal uncle wronged me

    I would not reproach him

  32. اني وحقك لست ذا

    صلف ولا للوتر طالب

    For I know he would answer

    Every question

  33. واذا قدرت على عقا

    ب أخ فما انا بالمعاقب

    And altercation may end up

    With the judge's rod

  34. بل لو اساء اليّ من

    خالك لم اك بالمعاتب

    And repeating words that

    Reopen old wounds

  35. اذ كنت اعلم انه

    عن كل مسألة يجاوب

    But I am a man who prides

    Himself on his strange compositions

  36. ولربما آل الجدا

    ل الى جلاد بالقواضب

    I see it fit to protect

    The honor of my works from violations

  37. واعادة الكلم التي

    تنكى القروح من المثالب

    I vowed they will not return

    To a substitute that disappoints

  38. لكنني رجل اغا

    ر على جوائبي الغوائب

    I guaranteed they will succeed

    In the East and West

  39. اني ارى عرض الجو

    ائب ان يصان من الوجائب

    It is these that the trusted one

    Cares for, unlike the guardian

  40. عاهدتها ان لا تعو

    د إلى عوض معاد خائب

    And it is for Al-Hirrani to preserve it

    From every defect and despoiler

  41. ولها ضمنت الفوز في

    جوب المشارق والمغارب

    So assailing it means

    Assailing my essence and offspring

  42. وهي التي عنى تنو

    ب لدى الاباعد والاقارب

    And I am pained by what hurts it

    Its adversary is my adversary and opponent

  43. وعلى المنيب الحران

    يقي الذي هو عنه نائب

    Why does one who loves curiosities

    Not see any curiosities in it?

  44. فعلى حفظ ذمارها

    عن كل عياب وثالب

    It is eloquent Arabic but Pierce it

    And you find the taste of foreigners

  45. فالطعن فيها نافذ

    في الخلب مني والترائب

    You will not detect in it the accent

    Of a Perso-Arab or observer

  46. ويسؤني ما ساءها

    وخصيمها خصمي المحارب

    It is as if my creative pen

    Was its mother, not its peer

  47. ما بال من يهوى العجا

    ئب لا يرى فيها عجائب

    While preserving the original meaning from what

    Does not befit or accord with it

  48. عربية سبكا ولكن

    تبرها تبر الاجانب

    And through that effort of talent

    Grey hairs are concealed

  49. ما شم منها عجمة

    انف المراغم والمراقب

    And its ideas make me forget

    My requests each day

  50. حتى كأن نقيبتي

    ام لها دون النقائب

    By Allah, half the whiteness of my hair

    Is from those ideas

  51. مع صون معنى الاصل عما

    لا يلائم او يناسب

    After this, is there any

    Blame or quarrel from the troublemaker?

  52. وبذاك من جهد القريحة

    ما تشيب به الذوائب

    If people were like me

    They would all be kindred

  53. ويعيد يومي غيهبا

    يخفى به وجه المطالب

  54. تالله ان بياض شعري

    نصفه من ذي الغياهب

  55. افبعد هذا من ملا

    م او خصام من مشاغب

  56. لو كان هذا الخلق

    مثلي كان كلهم اقارب
