1. الدمع بعدك ما ذكرتك جارِ

    والذكر ما واراك تربُ وارِ

    Tears after you, when I remembered you, flowed

    And remembrance, when it concealed you, was grievous and woeful

  2. يا راحلاً عن مهجة غادرتها

    تصلَى من الحسرات كل أوار

    O you who left the heart you deserted

    Every dawn prayers are offered for the deep sorrows

  3. خطأ وهمتُ فأين بعدك مهجتي

    ما في حشاي سوى لهيب النار

    I was mistaken when I thought my heart was with me after you

    There is nothing in my bosom except the flames of fire

  4. رَمَقاً أقل الجسم مني فادحاً

    فكأنه وقر من الأوقار

    My body diminished from me, extremely weakened

    As if it were a heavy load from burdens

  5. ما كان ضرّ الدهر لو أبقاك لي

    عيناً على الآثار والأذكار

    Fate would not have been harsh had it kept you with me

    An eye on traces and remembrances

  6. ما بعد فقدك رائعي أو رائقي

    شيء من الظلمات والأنوار

    After losing you I have no joys or comforts

    Just glimpses of darkness and light

  7. سيان إن جنّ الظلام عليّ أو

    طلع الصباح وأنت عني سار

    It’s all the same if darkness descends upon me or

    Dawn breaks and you are gone from me

  8. يا بئس ذاك الليل إذ لم يبق لي

    من مطمع فيه إلى الأسحار

    Oh what a woeful night when there was left for me

    No expectation in it till dawn

  9. أرّقتني من قبله ستّاً وفي

    ه حُرمْت خمسي واستطبت شعاري

    Before it, six nights had kept me awake and on it

    I was deprived of five and my aspirations were cut off

  10. أبُني ما يجدي التصبر قولهم

    حكم المنية في البرية جار

    Do not tell me patience helps, they say

    Death’s judgement in the land is just

  11. كلا ولا بي قرّ بعدك من حمى

    ما هذه الدنيا بدار قرار

    No, without you I have no refuge or shelter

    For this world is no abode of permanence

  12. كم قد حملتك فوق راحي إذ غدو

    تورحت ثُمت حُرْتُ خير محار

    How often did I carry you on my bosom when you walked

    Then you became the best mount I possessed

  13. ولكم سهرت الليل من جزع فما

    أغنى بكاي عليك أو أسهاري

    And how often did I stay up all night distressed, but

    My crying over you did not help, nor my keeping vigil

  14. ولكم جأرت لبرء دائك ضارعاً

    ولغير نفع كان طول جؤاري

    And how often did I plead to the healer for your illness

    Yet my prolonged pleading was to no avail

  15. ولكم حضنتك في الحنادس خوف أن

    يطرأ عليك من الحوادث طاري

    And how often did I hold you in my sleeves, afraid

    A mishap would befall you from the calamities

  16. وجمال وجهك لي يخيل أنني

    في روضة أُنُف ضحاء نهار

    The beauty of your face made me imagine

    I was in a garden of blossoming youth in daylight

  17. إن لم يصورك المصور لي فقد

    صُوّرت بالمأثور من أشعاري

    If the artist did not portray you for me, yet

    You were portrayed in the poetry I recited

  18. أو إن يكن واراك لحد ضيق

    فالأرض عندي اليوم أضيق دار

    Or if the grave concealed you in its narrowness

    Then the earth to me today is an even narrower abode

  19. أو إن تكن عني حجبت فإنما

    بقيتْ خلال خوالج الأفكار

    Or if you hid from me, yet you remained

    Amidst the thoughts that wandered in my mind

  20. لا أنسينك أو أحين فما أتى

    حين عليّ خلا من استذكار

    I cannot forget you, or find a time

    Without remembering and recollection of you

  21. ولأرثينك ما بقيت وإن أمُت

    فليتلون رثاك عني القاري

    I will lament you as long as I live, and if I die

    Then let the reciters recite your elegy after me

  22. يا حسرة عدم التبصر بعدها

    عدم التبصر في احتمال خساري

    Oh what a pity, the blindness after insight

    Then the blindness in enduring my loss

  23. كثر المعاين لي وقل معاوني

    وكوت حشاي شماتة الزوار

    Many have observed me, few have supported me

    While my bosom exults in the gloating of visitors

  24. فرويتُ بيتاً قاله من ذاق ما

    قد ذقت من ثكل ووحشة جار

    So I recited a verse said by one who tasted

    What I have tasted of loss and loneliness:

  25. جاورت أعدائي وجاور ربه

    شتان بين جواره وجواري

    “My enemies were my neighbors, while his Lord was his neighbor

    Vast is the difference between His neighborhood and mine”

  26. يا فجعة نزلت فحطم كاهلي

    تأويقها وأبان قصم فقاري

    Oh what a calamity befell me and crushed my shoulders

    Its bonding and the breaking of my spine

  27. في ليلة فارقت فيها ناظري

    أبدا وفارقني على إجبار

    On a night when my eyes parted from their vision forever

    And they parted from me by force

  28. لا غرو إن يك قد سرى جنح الدجى

    عن ناظريّ فكل نجم سار

    No wonder the wings of night have spread

    Over my eyes, and every star travelled on

  29. قد كنت أطمع أن يعيش مهنأً

    بعدي ويبلغ أطول الأعمار

    I had hoped he would live happily after me

    And reach the greatest age

  30. ووددت لو أن ذقت حتفي قبله

    لكن خيار الله غير خياري

    I wished that I would meet my end before him

    But God’s choice is not my choice

  31. وسَّدته بيديّ رغماً ليته

    هو كان وسدني على إيثاري

    And I closed his eyes with my hands though I wish

    He had closed mine, out of my preference

  32. عيني إليه رنت وما لي حيلة

    يا ليت من نظرِ مُنَى إنظار

    My eyes yearned for him but I had no power

    If only the glance of death had glanced

  33. قصرت يدي عن كف ما أودى به

    إن القصور مظنة الإقصار

    My hands fell short of covering what ended him

    Shortcomings point to deficiencies

  34. لهفي عليه وطرفه لي يشتكي

    إذ كان لم يقدر على الإخبار

    I yearn for him while he complains to me

    When he could not express himself

  35. لهفي عليه على السرير موسّداً

    ولو استطعت لكان فوق يساري

    I yearn for him, lying propped up on the bed

    If only I could have been at his left side

  36. لكن أدنى اللمس كان يزيده

    ألماً فكان يؤوه من أشعاري

    Yet the slightest touch increased his

    Pain, so he would moan from my poetry

  37. ويئنّ أنة مستجير واجفاً

    كالطير قُرّ فبات دون قرار

    And he would groan, pleading for refuge, startled

    Like a bird shot, spending the night without rest

  38. حتى خشيت الدمع يؤلم جسمه

    لما عليه همي كودْق جار

    Until I feared my tears would hurt his body

    With the concerns that boiled within me

  39. يا رعشة أودت به قد أورثت

    قلبي الوجوب ولوعة التذكار

    Oh what a tremor that took him and bequeathed

    Obligatory anguish and the agony of remembrance

  40. ليت النفوض أقرّ عيني بعد أن

    سخنت بنفض فيه ذي إقرار

    If only the release had comforted my eye after

    It was inflamed by his release that I desired

  41. لهفي عليه في الظلام معانقي

    وكرايَ من شفق أليم غرار

    I yearn for him in the darkness, embracing him

    Though I disliked the burning intensity of fondness

  42. لهفي عليه والغناء ينميه

    وإذا سكتّ صبا إلى الإكثار

    I yearn for him and singing soothes him

    And when I’m silent he asks for more song

  43. لهفي عليه وهو يأخذ من يدي

    ويعيد ما يعطوه لاستغزار

    I yearn for him and he takes from my hand

    And returns what I give him, for favor

  44. لهفي عليه وهو لائك رُدْنه

    بلآلئٍ وضاحة ودراري

    I yearn for him, his necklace of pearls gleaming

    Luminous, white, and precious

  45. يا يوم أنشبت المنيةُ فيه طف

    لاً لا يطيق عوالق الأظفار

    Oh the day death pounced on the boy

    Too weak to resist the claws

  46. يا خطة عالت فسوَّت بين حت

    في والحياة إلى مدى مقدار

    Oh the death blow that equalized between his end

    And life, to the extent of its measure

  47. قد كان يحلو العيش حين يلوح لي

    والآن مرّ فصار ذا إمرار

    Living was sweet when he would appear to me

    And now it is bitter, unpalatable

  48. لا البعد يسليني ولا طول المدى

    وتخالف الأعصار والأمصار

    Neither distance consoles me, nor length of time

    And the changing of eras and lands

  49. ما تنقضي الحسرات أو أقضي أمىً

    فبذا عليّ جرى قضاء الباري

    Sorrows do not end or fulfill my wish

    For this is how the Judge has judged me

  50. كلا ولا تطفي أواري عبرتي

    ولئن همت في الصب كالأمطار

    No, my teary laments cannot be extinguished

    And if I decided to be patient, like rain

  51. فالنار إلا النار ثكل تنطفي

    والماء إلا الدَّمع ضد النار

    Only fire, just fire, can end the bereavement

    And only tears can oppose the fire

  52. يا ليت راهي العيش يوماً راجع

    وفداء مربوب أبوه الهاري

    Oh if only I could see life returning one day

    And a dear life ransomed for my lost one’s life

  53. فأكون فاديَ عمر نجليَ لاقيا

    حتفي لقاء القانع المختار

    Then I would ransom my son’s life with my own death

    As the willing sacrifice, the chosen one

  54. داريت ما لا ضير فيه لأجله

    فاليوم لست لما يضير أداري

    I have turned away from what would not harm me for his sake

    So today I do not turn away from what harms me

  55. أن المنية والأماني بعده

    سيان مستويان في استئثاري

    After him, hopes and wishes are equal

    In monopolizing me, surrounding me

  56. فلتفعل الأيام بي ما تشتهي

    ما بعد هذا الخطب من أضرار

    So let the days do to me what they will

    After this affliction, there are no more harms

  57. ولتذهب الآمال عني إنني

    لم يبق لي في العيش من أوطار

    And let hopes disappear from me, for I have

    No more seasons left in life

  58. من ذاق ثكلاً مثل ثكلي فاجعا

    فليُقصرنَّ اليوم عن أصْباري

    If one has tasted loss like my grievous loss

    Then let him today fall short of my patience

  59. وليبكينّ معي ويحملني على

    فرط البكاء بمدمع مدرار

    And let him cry with me, and make me exceed

    All bounds in crying, with copious tears

  60. ما هدّ ركن الصبر مثل الثكل أو

    حَسَم المطا كحسامه البتّار

    Nothing has shaken the pillar of patience like loss

    Or cut sharper than its blade

  61. الطفل يقضي مرة لكنما

    يقضي أبوه قبله بمرار

    A child passes once, but his father

    Tastes bitterness time and again

  62. تمروه في نزع ابنه وخفوته

    أدوار حين أيّما أدوار

    They experience the child’s passing and his evanescence

    In phases, however many phases

  63. هيهات من قد أشبهت أطواره

    في فقده أوطاره أطواري

    Alas, who can be like me in the phases of loss

    Or have phases like mine?

  64. أو أنّ في سوء الأسى لي أسوة

    أو أن في طول الحياة قصاري

    Or that in the bitterness of grief I have a peer

    Or that in the length of life, my life is short

  65. لن ينفع الإنسان شيئاً حرصه

    كلَّ إلى أجل على مقدار

    Man's striving will not avail him anything

    Against his appointed time and allotted share

  66. الموت غاية كل حيّ يستوي

    فيه ذرو الأيسار والأعسار

    Death is the end of every living being

    The rich and poor are equal in it

  67. والسابقون يضعهم يوم مع ال

    متأخرين إلى ثرىً منهار

    The foremost are placed by it with the latecomers

    In a crumbling grave

  68. لكن يوم الطفل أفجع حيث لم

    يعرف له مضمار سعي دار

    But the day the child passed was most anguished

    For he did not know the race course of life

  69. ما لذّ طعم العيش إلاّ من عدا

    ه الثكل لا من كان ذا أيسار

    Nothing sweetens the taste of life except absence

    Of loss, not abundance of wealth

  70. فالرزء في الأموال مثل الشعر تر

    زأه فينبت خِلفة الأطوار

    For wealth is like poetry - it is only as good

    As what comes after it in every era

  71. فليهْنِ من عاشت بنوه عيشه

    وليصف مورده عن الأكدار

    So let him who lives to see his children live rejoice

    And turn his watering hole away from sorrows

  72. بعض الزوايا قد يساغ وبعضها

    يبقى شجا يشجي مدى الأعصار

    Some troubles may be tolerable, while some

    Remain thorns that pierce for ages
