ورُبَّ عجوز تحاكي السَّعالي
تشير وتنهي وتأمر أمرا
Many an old woman acts coy and coughs,
Gesturing, commanding, giving orders,
يقابلها شيخها بامتثال
ويسعى لخدمتها مستمرّا
Her old man obeys with compliance,
He keeps serving her, always diligent,
وتقعد تحكي كلاماً سخيفاً
ومستمعوها يقولون سحرا
She sits there, speaking nonsense,
Her audience says she casts spells,
تقول بداري كلب وهرّ
وللهرّ ذعر إذا الكلب هرّا
She says "In my house there's a dog and a cat"
"The cat is scared when the dog growls"
ويرقبني الهرّ إن كنت آكل
يُمنى ليمنى ويُسرى ليسرى
"The cat watches me when I eat"
"Looking right and left cautiously"
وبنتي ليزا تؤاسيه مما
لديها فمنها يلازم حجرا
"My daughter Leza comforts him"
"So he always stays near a rock"
وقد كان عندي من قبل جرو
تلوّن بطنا وصدراً وظهرا
"I once had a Jerboa before"
"With a colorful belly, chest and back"
وكنت عليه لفي غاية الحر
ص اسقيه ملء كؤوسي درّا
"I was very fond of him"
"I would fill cups of water for him"
فجاءت عزيزة قوم إلينا
فرامته مني والعين شكرى
"Then a nobleman's daughter came to us"
"And took him from me, may my eyes be sacrificed for her"
وكان ينام على فخذيّ
ويلحس رُغفي إذا ما اسبطرا
"He would sleep on my thigh"
"And lick my breadcrumbs when I ate"
وكان فلان أتاني عام كذا
بُجريّ فما عاش شهرا
"So and so brought me a hedgehog in year such and such"
"It didn't live for more than a month"
وتسأل أن تنس تاريخ ذاك ال
نهار المعظم زيداً وعمرا
"She asks you to forget the date of that"
"Significant day for Zayd and Amr"
فأما النساء فمما اختصصن
به أكل ما أشبه التين نحرا
"As for women, what they specialize in"
"Is eating what resembles figs, slaughtered"
ويأكلن والراح منهن بالجلد
مستترات ويمضغن سرّا
"They eat with winds in their skin"
"Chewing secretly, discretely"
وتسمع للشاي قرقرة من
معاهن تحكي هنا قرَّ قرّا
"You hear tea bubbling"
"From their pots, narrating here, bubbling there"
وتأخذ في صحنها بالمشكَّة
قدراً من اللحم يشبه ظفرا
"She takes in her plate with the ladle"
"Some meat that resembles a nail"
فتعلكه برهة من زمان
ليمرأ من بعد أن يتهرّا
"She chews it for a while"
"So it can pass later, melted"
وزوج المضيف تقول له خذ
عزيزي مما أمامك وَزْرا
"The host's wife says to him, take"
"My dear, from what's in front of you, a burden"
فيشكرها ويقول لقد
كثر الفضل منك عليّ ودرّا
"He thanks her and says, your grace upon me is plenty and continuous"
"She sits dividing the guests' food"
وتجلس تقسم أكل الضيوف
فتعطيك من ذاك نزرا فنزرا
"Giving you bits and pieces from it"
"With every bit, you lower your head reluctantly, and thank her"
وفي كل نزر تنال تطأطئ
رأسك رغماً وتشكر شكرا
"If there are two colors, she tells you, choose"
"Your share from what's here, and take"
وإن يك لونان قالت لك اختر
نصيبك مما هنّا وتحرّا
"It would not be proper between those two to gather"
"As if you married two sisters in succession"
كان لم يجز بين ذينك جمع
كأنك ناكح أختين تترى
